Hi

I have a strange problem wiith a new computer. It is running Ubuntu 10.10 on a AMD Phenom II 1100T 6 core and 16 GByte of RAM. The following projects seems to run ok and finished without error messages:

321 Prime Search (LLR)
The Riesel Problem (LLR)
Seventeen or Bust

However they do not validate. Other projects seems to run fine, and I have not seen any problems on other BOINC project sites.

I tried to delete all programs and reinstall, but it doesn't help.

Machine: http://www.primegrid.com/show_host_detail.php?hostid=186828

Example workunit (The Riesel Problem (LLR)) not validating:

http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=170748990

Boinc version: 6.10.58
Application version: BOINC LLR 6.03 wrapper (But application is named ..._llr_wrapper_6.09_i686....)

Has anyone any clue?

Best regards Bent

they would error out directly if this was the problem.

usually this is an overclocking or memory problem..

32 bit seems to be installed. Primegridapplication is i686 and the 32 bit GNU C library libc-i386 is installed. Does those applications need other 32 bit librarys installed like multiprecision libgmp3?

Tomorrow I will carefully go through my BIOS settings and run intensive memory tests. I will even reinstall hole Ubuntu to verify that I have no errors there.

I will then report back. If I find something spesific, it may help others.

Best regards Bent

I did heavy memory testing for several hours and no errors there. Then I checked every setting in BIOS and used default or automatic everywhere, and as a last precaution I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit from scratch. Lucky enough this computer is used solely for BOINC crunching. :-)

Now I am awating the validating result for a Primegrid unit, which finished earlier today.

Every setting is now default.

PPS LLR v6.09 runs fine, at least those 3 I have tested with. But this project has also run smooth before. Each unit are rather small and finish in about 10-13 minutes.

321 Prime Search (LLR) v6.09 hasn't yet validated. However one co-pilot has finished the same work unit and we are both marked inconclusive. I do suspect that I am the errorneous :-(

I also runs three projects on YoYo and they all seems to finish perfect.

I have three theories:

1) I have a real bug in my CPU. Then I need to pinpoint it for complaining to manufacturer.
2) BIOS/Chipset bug.
3) Software error (compilation?). Not likely, however, this may be a good start because I need the source code anyway to figure out if this is a CPU, BIOS or Chipset bug.

Any suggestions will be helpful. At first I will flash my BIOS to the very last version (Gigabyte mainboard: GA-890GPA-UD3H Rev 2.1.)

With best regards

Bent

I have found that PrimeGrid uses sllr version 3.8.4. A newer version (3.8.5) exists with he following bugfixes. I have not yet been able to test this new version, but hope I find a trick to use it.

1) Main features :

LLR is a primality proving program for numbers of the form N = k*b^n +/- 1,
(k < b^n), or numbers which can be rewritten in this form, like
Gaussian-Mersenne norms.
It can also do strong and efficient PRP tests on more general k*b^n+c forms,
on Wagstaff numbers (2^p+1)/3, repunits (10^p-1)/9 and generalized repunits
(b^p-1)/(b-1), b!=2.

This version uses the most recent release (26.5) of George Woltman's Gwnum
library, to do fast multiplications and squarings of large integers modulo N.

Since version 25.11, gwnum library is no longer restricted to base two for
efficient computing modulo k*b^n+c numbers (but SSE2 is required if b != 2),
and LLR greatly takes advantage of this improvement.

LLR can run on all machines where gwnum code can run, so, on all Intel x86
compatible machines.

- Two bugs have been fixed since previous 3.8.4 version :

- ErrorCheck=1 was ignored in command line, due to a bug in user interface.

- Base Two CC chains processing was incorrect.

- The option -oNoSaveFile=1 has been added at the request of an user.
Indeed, if it is set, any test is restarted at beginning if stopped...

I asked the same at the end of february.

Eventually, but there's no hurry. There's only minor differences from the current version and no "noticeable" speed improvements.

Hi

More and more I look into this. more certain I become that this is a systematic error, not a termal, overclocking or memory problem.

Take a look at: http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=172218343

Runtime om my computer is: 40,644.16 CPU seconds

My wingman has a runtime of: 58,296.29 CPU seconds

and the output:

Can anyone tell me what is going on? Should I look into the BOINC software or fiddle with the new sllr 3.8.5 version?

I am by no means an expert so take anything I say or suggest in that context; but, have you tried running PPS and or SGS work units on this machine? If so do they complete and validate - if you haven't run any, I would try a couple to see what happens.

The tasks that you have been running (at least the ones that I can see) are some of the most memory intensive using some of the largest FFT's.

I do believe I have verified that all the Sieve based tasks seem to run just fine. But as this has been an obcesion for me ;-) , I will try to run one unit of every project available on PrimeGrid and se what happens.

CPU temperature is about 40 degrees Celsius (Water cooled), northbridge about 48-49 deegress and none of the disks are above 38-39 degrees and I have 16 GByte matched RAM.

By the way, YoYo projects runs just fine.

Bent :-)

Next rung up the ladder is to try TRP LLR again - how does your host cope with these?
These run longer and are more likely to show a problem than the shorter WUs.
Are you able to observe CPU temperature during the run?

Alternatively, leave your host running PPS and SGS for a longer period, to confirm that there are no errors.
If a 10 hour long TRP WU usually errors, you may also get one or two shorter WUs error over the same period.

Again this is offered within the context of I ain't no expert.

If LLR works for the small FFT's; my next step would be to try finding the option (if it exists, and it should) in your BIOS that will allow you to run your memory in "unganged mode" and then try some of the TRP or 321 work units and see what happens.

If this works great - don't ask me to explain 'cuz I can't. All I know is that the option changes the way the system maps out the available memory and the way the cores access it.

In parallell I am running some different Sieve tasks

PPS Sieve still running ( http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=173125671)

I monitor several temepratures during run. CPU temperature is about 40-41 deegre Celsius during 100% load on all kernels due to a liquid cooling system. Nortbridge may reach up to 50 Degree Celsius. All harddisks are below 40 deegrees Celsius.

Vato: I will try to follow your instructions and report back.
TheDawgz: I will check that too.

According to AMD the 1100T Phenom II is a 10h modell, which has several improvements over earlier models in the streaming architecture, thus affecting the SSEx instructions behaviour. If I have read documentation correctly, LLR is heavily dependent on assembler coding. Could it be some kind of mismatch?

Very best regards

As the easiest to do imidiate, I checked BIOS DCTs mode. This was default set to "unganged". To do a change I switched this to "ganged", which should tie the two build in memory controllers in the CPU together.

When restarted I aborted those LLR units which was already running and downloaded four new units:

3 x TRP LLR
1 x 321 PS LLR

Let us see what happens now :-)

Very interesting!!!!

A TRP LLR task now validated ( http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=173552059 )

However, it validated against another Phenom II Processor of an earlier modell. So before I can be conclusive, the other three LLR task has to complete.

TheDawgz, it may turn out that you gave the best clue despite I did the opposite :-)))

I hope PrimGrid give you some bonus credits :-))

Setting DCT to "ganged" seems to help in my situation. Motherboard defaults to "unganged".

Hi everyone

The problem I have reported in this thread seems to have found a working solution. I write this in hope that it may help others in the same situation.

Equipment:
- Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3HRev 2.1 motherboard. BIOS version FF
- 16 GByte RAm distributed on four 4 GByte modules (1333 MHz)
- AMD Phenom II 1100T 6-core processor (No overclocking)

Problem description:
All longer, and occasionally shorter, LLR based work tasks seems to complete, but doesn't validate. All Sieve based tasks completed perfectly and validates.

Solution:
- Enter BIOS during boot by presing Del Button
- Enter MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.)
- Enter DRAM Configuration
- On top of screen change DCTs Mode to "ganged"
- Press F10 for saving settings and reboot

Whats happening:
This is more like a guess than solid knowledge :-) The 1100T CPU has two memory controller registers named DCT0 and DCT1. In default setting "unganged" they may operate more or less independent. My guess is that the highly optimized assembler code inn LLR isn't aware of this, thus when the processors internally do task-switches or other multi kernel allocations, the LLR process may occasionally use the wrong DCT register and then operate on wrong memory allocations. Setting the DCT mode to "ganged", those two registers are tied together (made equal ?), thus this error can't show up.

The clue to find this solution was given by TheDawgz, but thanks to everybody helping along the road. Every proposal and help brought me further in the investigation.

With very best regards

So is the pc faster in its current configuration when doing 'normal' things, ie non Boinc stuff? Or is it slower now? The 'ganged' and unganged' setting must do something or it wouldn't be there and I am wondering what you gave up and why this way is not the default.

Ganged is the AMD equivalent to Intel's dualchannel-mode where two 64bit RAM-modules are added to one 128bit channel. This can theoretically double the RAM-bandwidth, but unganged seems to be more efficient because both 64bit channels working independent and can access two rows at once with one data fetch.

It is depended of the used app's which mode is more efficient. A big problem are the mainboards because not every board works rock-solid with both memory-mode's...

Thanks for information. I learn every day.

I haven't noticed any difference in speed. At least not with any of my BOINC projects. I have build this PC purely for BOINC'ing. And next week I will install a GPU to test accelerated tasks.

With best regards Bent

thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

I had the exact same issue (AMD Phenom 1090T, Ubuntu 11.04) and I was looking in a lot of different places to resolve it. Sieves and shorter llr's would run just fine but longer llr's (TRP, Woodall, etc) would error out very quickly.
Changing the memory settings in the BIOS to ganged mode fixed the problem. Woodall LLRs are now validating just fine.

Thanks again!

My experience is that running unganged is in most cases faster
So in my view its not the setting of how the memory runs, your problem seems to be timing related
I have had similar problems with memory, thats why is is often wise to see what memory is supported with your mainbord
Funny enough this not allways gives a guarantee that timings problems won't appear.
This far all 3 of my home amd machines which i had running where more stable with only 2 modules or ran better with smaller memory modules

For instance i had 4x2 Gb =8 Gb DDR2 geil memory in my last X3-720 system, but whatever i did gave weird problems
Including booting slow, programs crash, weird results at boinc projects

So i took them out and took my intel systems memory 2 corsair 1066 modules 2x2 gb. This machine simply refused to boot in 1066 mode with them.
When i had those in my amd it suddenly ran smooth, and totally error free.

Now i put the 8 Gb in my intel system and poof solved the other issues as well.

If i wasn't running boinc i probably would have never had so many issues ;)
But just because the boinc projects are so demanding this issues come in the spot light
