Message 33936 - Posted: 6 Mar 2011 | 23:47:19 UTC

I was looking to give MS-Visual-Basic-2010-Express a tryout, so I thought I
might have a go at writing something useful for PrimeGrid while I was at it..
and here is the result!

I've always believed PRPNet is avoided by the vast majority of
'PrimeGridders' using Windows, simply because their eyes glaze-over at the
mere mention of the phrase "Edit the .ini file.."!
So I have turned my hand to writing a little PRP-ini file editor to give
those users a nice, friendly Windows Dialog instead.

You can download (source and object/exe) files from the following location...

https://sites.google.com/site/prpstuffsteverc/

All u need to do to run it, is copy the 'PRPClientEdit.exe' file into the
same folder that holds your 'master-prpclient.ini' file, and dbl-click to run
it from there.

I have also included source files, and an Install.exe - as published by VB -
but the only reason u would need to run this, is if u need all that DotNet
bloatware to be downloaded.

Operation is pretty-much self-explanatory ('Highly-ToolTipped'!). It
basically reads the INI file and displays all relevant data in a dialog where
it can be edited and updated at the click of a button. There are also buttons
to do the jobs of all those *-update-*.bat and *-start-*.bat files as well.

It also includes a neat little bit of code to ensure the percentages of all
those active servers add up to exactly 100 - a common source of problems for
users!

I have also noticed that the downloaded INI file sometimes contains lines
terminated only by lf instead of cr-lf which upsets some text-editors (like
Notepad!!) - so I have added code to fix this...

If interest is high (or if I ever get around to it!) I am considering
'down-grading' it to VB6 in order to get rid of all that DotNet bloatware,
which, quite frankly, drives an old-school, minimalist,
cut-my-teeth-on-raw-machine-code, object-smobject, Bring-back-FORTRAN!
wrinkly like me nuts!

- I could also include radio-buttons for all those debug/start/stop options I
have managed to ignore up til now.

Please feel free to
Use-it/Don't-use-it/Post-it/Pass-it-on/Revise-it/Ignore-it/etc. at your
leisure, and let me know what u think...

I give it a thumbs up.

BTW, if you had used an open source UI framework (such as GTk or QT), it would appeal to more users. Many of the PRPNeters are Mac and Linux users.

I tried the program but apparently I have to upgrade or install .NET. Once I get that done I will give another go. Good work Steve :)

I thought all Linux guys just aren't happy unless they're 'logging on as Root' or 'rebuilding the kernel' or something like that, and would laugh in the face of my puny attempts at making their lives easier! :-)

However, the idea of being able to write platform-independent applications appeals to me, so I went a-browsing and came across mono which appeared to be the Answer to World-Tension in terms of porting my little app to the Far-Corners of the Universe - as it even has a cross-compiler for Visual-Basic .NET stuff.

Unfortunately their MoMA Analyzer-tool doesn't appear to like my little effort at all - which makes me wonder what on earth it WOULD like, as I can't imagine how it could possibly be simpler! - so I might just have to bite the bullet and redo the whole thing in something more along the lines of C++ or C# - although this would be somewhat out of my comfort-zone..!

Check out my first attempt at writing c++ under Qt!
Probably not the most elegant code - effectively just a line-for-line translation of my V-Basic code - (along with a lot of cutting-&-pasting from the Qt examples! - so I don't REALLY know what I am doing, most of the time - but I'm a fast learner - (just a coupla weekends with this whole-new environment and language to date!) - so any advice/suggestions would be more than welcome!

That's all part of the Qt Development system, which u can download from here. Then u can use Qt Creator to run/modify/develop/etc. to yr heart's content.
Alternatively, the Quick&Dirty solution is to download QtDLLs.zip and bung all those DLLs in with the Qt-version .exe to run it (This works 4 me in Windows-7 but I can't vouch for anything else!)
Please note that the Qt version is very much a work-in-progress - Really only posted for any c++ gurus to take a look at!
If u r a Windows-user, then the VB version is by far the better choice at present!

I haven't had time to look into what you've done yet. As you know, my desire is to have a GUI client and a command line client. It would be nice that the GUI client has multiple threads, one per client.

Yes, it would, - but it has disadvantages as well - Its a big effort to integrate all the separate little .INI files into one common file for the Client-Master (like that dreaded App-Info!!!) and u start to run into the same problems that Boinc suffers from - with the extra effort required to get clients to 'play-nice' all together in the same playpen!

I far prefer the idea of a 'loose' Client-master, which simply starts, stops, and monitors the individual clients from afar - all running in their own separate folders. This is more in the 'experimental-spirit' of PRPNet - while still giving non-technical users an 'easy ride' with a few button-clicks via a nice, friendly GUI.

My editor already has the ability to start clients, and I could very quickly add code to stop (via that 'stopasapoption=' parm) and monitor (via the log-files) clients as well. The beauty of doing it this way is that integration into the current way of doing things can be gradual and seamless - simply by adding the PRPClientEdit.exe into the current download-package (in a sort-of 'Use-it / Don't Use-it' way) - then we can gradually add features for better interaction to both PRPClientEdit.exe and PRPClient.exe while still maintaining their ability to operate totally independently of one-another.

This gives the 'gurus' a purely console-based client to mess with (without any of that 'icky-gooey' stuff!) and the 'n00bs' an easy 'point&click' option.
Best-of-all-possible-worlds to my mind!

Thoughts?

Scenario where PRPClientEdit.exe (or any other GUI) takes info from (sub)folders and display them in a single place sounds appealing.
Another level - control PRPClients.
Yes another level - use UNC path to monitor/control clients on severals hosts.

Client itself can stays about the same, "just" build another management layer aroung it. Perhaps similar approach to BOINC core and BOINC Manager, only not using RPC but (shared) folder files.

Why Thank-you Sci* - You simply can't imagine what your kind words mean to me..
..And to think I've been crying myself to sleep each night these past four months under the false impression that Nobody Cares! :-)

If there's anybody else 'Out There' who's actually tried it, I would love to hear from you - even if you hated it, or couldn't get it to work..

BTW, if you had used an open source UI framework (such as GTk or QT), it would appeal to more users. Many of the PRPNeters are Mac and Linux users.

I thought all Linux guys just aren't happy unless they're 'logging on as Root' or 'rebuilding the kernel' or something like that, and would laugh in the face of my puny attempts at making their lives easier! :-)

(snip)

Naw, it's "Download the latest device driver"... "sudo apt-get install" (or a variation thereof, depending on which Linux you've got) is the mantra.

Well I gave it a try,
it works for me on my business laptop, where I must not crunch :(
on my own Linux systems (yes I am the man who works on ssh-shells only) there will never work any graphical application, because there is not installed any graphical system or window-manager
so - it may be well for a user with a (real or virtual) screen, but not for me - and this is not at all your fault ...

Great work SteveRC!!!

To compile qt version under linux with gcc:

qmake PRPEditor.pro make cp PRPEditor path/to/prpnet

It modifies master_prpclient.ini fine.
Updating clients dosn't work (wrong directories).
After changing all "PRPClient-" to "prpclient=" strings, updating works as expected.
Starting clients dosn't work (probably not implemented).
IMHO updating and starting isn't so important, becouse you can still use scripts.

Once again GREAT WORK.

Well this is a very handy tool thank you
It makes life easier for a lazy person like me ;)
No more editting nasty ini files and runs straight out of the box :D
Now the only 2 things left is to know how i get points in boinc while running this nifty prpnet fast client.
And what project belongs to what kind of icon here
I know the 2 i am running cause they came fairly quick ( gpu crunching rocks)
Ofcourse i have no clue if i get those icons also when running the dos client.

All PRPnet-projects are summarized in the PSA-badge. Credits will granted manual by the PG-admins.
The badge colors are the same like in the Boinc Sieve-projects.

Well progress goes slow with my slow pc :D
Especially since i am 11,5 cpu's short now ;)
I wish i had my company server for this with its 12 xeons
But anyway i did not notice before the high cpu load caused by the gpu client, i found it sometimes eat up to 80% cpu time, which ofcourse drop the performance of the prpclient.
And found the cuda prpclient not able to use my second card, and clearly is often clearly just running in cpu mode.
Weird enough it also gives low credits while it does much more work.
