I have a few ATI cards.. but have not tested them with this app.
Something to consider, have you ran the program with app_info.xml under BOINC with a fully loaded CPU?
Also, How much CPU % is required to feed the GPU?
The CUDA app required major changes to get it to even run with low CPU usage in Windows, but only while launced by BOINC. Standalone testing was fine.

I set 1 Box up trying to run a few on my 58xx Cards just to see what the ATI Application was like but didn't have any success getting any GPU Wu's. All the Project wanted to do was send me CPU Work even after I Un-Checked CPU Work at the Project. It also kept telling me I didn't have a NVIDIA GPU, like I didn't know that already ...
Do the AP26 Files go in the same PrimeGrid Directory all the other PrimeGrid stuff is in or do you have to set up a separate Prime Grid Directory for the AP26 ATI Wu's ??? |

At the moment there is no official support for the ATI-app. It is in a testing state. You can download the zip-file, extract it and the run one test (result should be posted here).
Sorry, but you can not get any ATI-Workunit with the boinc-client. The behaviour of the boinc-client is correct: he wants to get "official" work, but there is no "official" application and no "official" work for your ATI-card ...
Have a nice sunday

New version with checkpoints and some speed improvements.
Link to current version: http://www.sesef.pl/AP/AP045.zip
Also, How much CPU % is required to feed the GPU?
Its CPU+GPU app. I moved sieving to GPU, CPU is still checking primality, so CPU usage is dependent on the core type and speed. |

I have installed it and it works.

(all pending validation now) |

wu are validating well.
I've just put ncpus 1.00 in app_info and %GPU Load went from 50% to 85%.
CPU core is fully used so it's not wasted and times seem really better now!
I have a powerful cpu (Q9550@3,40 GHz) so I think that it's still CPU bound, but in any case I think that setting 1 full core is better because doing so the app is not stealing cpu cycles to any projects without asking |
|
|
|
it works, now it's been some days without any problem.
I put 1 full core dedicated in app_info.xml and so times are good!
Does anyone other use this app? |

Tried it this morning, seems to work OK with multiple ATI cards as well. Running 2 WU's at a time on a pair of Radeon 4870's - configured to use 1 CPU and 1 GPU each. Completed and validated in my results list.
Unfortunately I lost 2 days worth of SoB work in the process, so just a word of warning - complete your current tasks before testing this in BOINC. :) |

Hay all,
I was excited when John PM'd me about there being ATI work, even though 'unofficial'. I've only recently gotten a GPU, so I'm kind of a noob on running optimised apps, and there was no help file in the .zip d/l, so I did my best. I'm erroring out - I've read the thread, and can't seem to find a solution (if there is one). I am on:

Did I not move everything to where its final destination is supposed to be, did I do something else wrong (fail to install completely and/or correctly), or is there still some dev work to be done? I'd like to run this if at all possible. BTW, since there aren't many projects which use CAL vs. the CUDA, all I can run is Collatz (since my GPU doesn't support dual-prec calculation so is inappropriate for MWay). so that was still running via my BOINC client when I tried the PG install; not sure if that's relevant. It'd be nice to get some PG work up on it.
Thanks in advance for any help and/or insight,
StandardbredHorse

That looks like the output from the original test version.
Perhaps you would like to install and try the BOINC version mentioned later in the thread. You will need to attach to the AP26 subproject and then stop BOINC. Then move the 4 files in the zip folder (AP26.exe, app_info.xml, brook.dll and brook_cal.dll) into the PrimeGrid directory located at C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\. Then restart BOINC. In other words the normal procedure for an anonymous platform installation.
You should also open app_info.xml in Notepad and change <max_ncpus>0.2/max_ncpus> to <max_ncpus>0.2</max_ncpus>
Changing the application to use a full CPU core instead of 0.2 core may give better performance:
<avg_ncpus>1.0</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>1.0</max_ncpus>
The BOINC version can be found at: http://www.sesef.pl/AP/AP26PGx86-461.zip |

There's something wrong, btw, in these times. I think, as you have just said, that much of the CPU & GPU usage is there only because of syncronizations, or we couldn't understand why a faster CPU & a faster GPU are doing worse than my config (my GPU is not overclocked!).

The code works, just might be able to be optimised more. Hence the beta :)
Well at 550secs for 35 creds, or 5.5k/day, I'll skip the ATi here for a while until it's optimised. I'm not generally a fan of mathematics projects - I generally prefer ones based on physical objects, but would help in the future to amass several millions of credits if the payout was better (i.e. the code was optimised more). Unless this is the parallel limit of this project.

Often the "latest" drivers for mobile GPU are constrained by OEM. You may need to try using the "ATI Mobility Modder" utility.

I dowloaded ATI Mobility Modder 1.2.1.0 from Driverheaven. With the program up, I browsed my ATI driver and pressed Modify, whereafter it said Driver Modifications Finished. The AP26 app still gives the same stderr.

I am definitely using the later version of the app. I had done this before, but trying again, here is exactly what I did:
With the AP26 subproject enabled in my preferences, as well as the reisel seive, I shut down Boinc and then copied the four files into "C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\" from the zip folder. Then I restarted Boinc, opened app_info.xml, and made the three changes suggested(<max_ncpus>0.2/max_ncpus> to <max_ncpus>0.2</max_ncpus>, then changing the 0.2 to 1.0 on the lines <avg_ncpus>1.0</avg_ncpus> and <max_ncpus>1.0</max_ncpus>)
The message in the stderr.xml is exactly the same when I launch the AP26.exe.

I'm a bit confused about this app.
If it's working under BOINC then why hasn't it been released?
I understand that it isn't as efficient as the CUDA version but if it still enables us to crunch on our ATI GPUs then I don't understand why it isn't generally available. What have I missed?
Thanks,
Peter

Yes and no, with our powerful ATI cards the app need one CPU core, thats terrible. I hope this app can be optimised very soon, there are not enough ATI apps outside :/

The message in the stderr.xml is exactly the same when I launch the AP26.exe.
Firstly you need to actually download an AP26 task before you do anything else, not just select it in your preferences.
Secondly any changes you make to the app_info.xml file will not take effect until BOINC is restarted. The app_info.xml file is read by BOINC when BOINC starts. So you neeed to edit the app_info file before you restart BOINC.
You would not be aware of that if you have not used an anonymous platform application before and I did not make it clear in my earlier post.
Thirdly you place the 4 files into the PrimeGrid folder located at "C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\" not into the "projects" folder itself.
Finally you do not launch AP26.exe, but just start and run BOINC. |

Thanks, kashi. I got the app running in no time. I ran a job, and it has valitated.
It took one full core, all others idle, with turbo boost running 2.66 GHz. This fed the GPU so that it was running a solid 97% except for a few times when it dropped to 0% for a few seconds. It took 2908 seconds run time.
I also ran an AP26 without my ATI card, with the same circumstances (one core active, turbo boost 2.66 GHz), and it only took 1727 seconds run time, 40% faster than with the ATI card on my computer.

Awesome. I just put those 4 files in the www.primegrid.com directory and restarted BOINC. I lost 8 work units that were in progress plus another couple of hours of work that was already downloaded. I won't be touching this crap again until it's officially supported.

That was unfortunate. Any unfinished tasks for applications that are not in an app_info.xml will be deleted when BOINC restarts. This always happens when using anonymous platform. I did say to download an AP26 task meaning only one however I did not repeat the warning given earlier in the thread by enderak and perhaps I should have. I was only trying to help some people who posted that they were having difficulty getting the BOINC AP26 ATI version to run so that they could help to test it.
My apologies for not repeating the warning given earlier. I have only ever run one PrimeGrid subproject at a time so the thought of trashing work for other subprojects was not in my mind. I understand the frustration and disappointment this can cause, I have had the same thing happen to me and lost a lot of partly completed work the first time I used an app_info.xml file when helping to test beta applications at Einstein@home and it has also happened a few times since at other projects when I have misconfigured something.
It is the nature of helping to test new applications that you have to be prepared for tasks to crash sometimes or cause other problems. Without people prepared to test though, development of new applications or improvements would be delayed or not happen at all. |
|
|
|
Well I saw the posts saying to download an AP26 workunit first, but there is nothing anywhere stating that you can only be attached to the AP26 project and no others. Can we not update the app_info.xml to support the other projects? :) I am doing AP26, SGS and PPS on this machine and I can't see the need to dedicate the entire machine to 1 project. =)

Yes after I read your previous post I thought of an app_info.xml to cater for the other PrimeGrid subprojects. However I then realised that it would be a quite a complicated one having to include so many different subprojects. If any of the subprojects changed or updated their application then it would quickly become out of date.
It is possible to make one I suppose for one's own usage, but if someone who is unfamiliar with how to install an app_info.xml misconfigures something then all the tasks would still be deleted. So the use of an all inclusive app_info.xml may provide false assurance.
Probably better and safer for most testers to follow the warning advice given by enderak and ensure that all tasks for all PrimeGrid subprojects are completed and the cache is empty before giving the BOINC AP26 ATI application a try.
I sometimes still muck up app_info.xml files even after using them for a while, so I almost always empty my cache first before using one. My cache is currently set to 0.2 days and I rarely use a large cache with any project so this is not a problem for me.
I'm probably not the best person to be giving advice on how to do these type of things but I can't see people struggling with something with nobody helping them for some time without at least trying to give some assistance. It is necessary to balance the level of detail given so as not to overwhelm. Also I may forget to mention some things that would not be known by someone new to a procedure because I have used it for a fair while and now take those things for granted.
Some people with greater knowledge and experience than me who would be able to help are sometimes reluctant to do so because either they do not have enough time to explain in detail or they have received ungrateful feedback in the past after the person they were trying to help had some negative experience.
For me I try not to get frustrated when something crashes that I have misconfigured or where I have followed advice given in good faith that may be incomplete or incorrect. Although I am always careful so as not to upset the running of the projects, I feel that these types of mistakes are helpful to learn something. With app_info.xml files particularly, most people who have used them extensively would have unintentionally trashed some tasks at least once, it's kind of like an initiation. :) It's quite a shock the first time it happens and any cached tasks just disappear into the ether like some kind of magic vanishing trick. It is understandable that this shock may create frustration, dismay and even anger. |

is anyone working on a new version of this ATi app, with maybe lower CPU usage?
anyway, thanks a lot for your dedication in bringing us this version! It's not perfect, but it's free for all, and surely better than what I could have done! |
