Message 19774 - Posted: 14 Dec 2009 | 17:55:29 UTC

I have been testing server 12006 for 121/27 numbers using prpnet.

I have seen the announcement regarding the
27*2^1902689-1 find

I seem to be the only
idiot wasting time testing on this port.

All the current 27k tests are only up to 27*2^1740000.

Where/what port is being tested for 27k with the larger values?

What am I missing?

Where was the testing being done on the larger 27k numbers?

I am apparently wasting time and electricity testing 27k's that have already been tested.

Please point me to the proper database where
27k is up to 190xxxx so I don't waste all my efforts
on 121k.

Please advise.

Thanks
and
Cheers.

Hello Pilgrim.

As I am the one who found this prime, I'll try to answer that question. But I'd like one of the admins to confirm or correct my statement as I can't be 100% sure.

I have a lot of computing power, but most of my machines are strictly offline, so I can't do BOINC or PRPnet on them. That's why I was given a list of candidates to be tested offline. Those candidates will not be fed into PRPnet. They are higher than what you get on PRPnet right now to avoid collisions and double work. When PRPnet reaches the lower boundary of my range, it will simply skip it and continue from the high boundary of my range.

Thus, you don't waste time or energy. The candidates you are testing have never been tested before and every prime you find will be a new discovery.
I hope you'll find one soon, thanks for the work you're doing!

Regards, Peter

Actually I have been told by the original admin for the 12121 and 27k search that 27k has been tested by other users up to at least 185xxx,
possibly 200xxx,which must be true because I have found a 27k prime on this port and was told that someone else has already found it...so I repeat,
why am I testing 27k numbers that have already been tested?

Why can't they be removed from the file?

Who wants to waste time testing old numbers?

I know, I know, there is still the 121k's but it is not worth the effort
for a very rare 121k to go through thousands of old 27k'
to get to it.

I would appreciate any insight from an admin on why this must be so....can't the 27k's and 121k's be separated?

Seems like a pretty easy thing to me.

The originator of both projects allowed you the choice on which one to work on.

Thanks

and

Cheers.

Hi Pilgrim.

I will put some on it now and i hope we can get some more working on 121 & 27 to get all up to 1,8M done.

Please all cruncher !!!

Give 1-2 days on PRPNet port: 12006; 27121 Prime Search: k=27 & 121 for k*2^n+-1 for n<10M; Max WU: 20

server=27121:100:2:prpnet.primegrid.com:12006

We will have that done in 2-3 days if we put some clients on it :)

...so I repeat, why am I testing 27k numbers that have already been tested? Why can't they be removed from the file?

I would appreciate any insight from an admin on why this must be so....can't the 27k's and 121k's be separated?

Seems like a pretty easy thing to me.

When the 27121 project started at PrimeGrid, in collaboration with the 12121 Search project, the +1 form had been sieved deeply but not primality tested far. Additionally, the -1 form had been primality tested far but sieving was rather shallow. Therefore, the initial focus was on sieving -1 so that it was at least as deep as +1. Once that was achieved, primality testing began.

At that time, the publicly known testing limits were as follows:

k=27 +1; n=1520000
k=27 -1; n=1850000
k=121 +1; n=840000
k=121 -1; n=3699925

As with all of PrimeGrid's primality testing efforts, an initial double check was done to the previous limits. For 27 +1, it was later determined that it was privately tested to n=1750000. The residues were requested but never supplied. Therefore, testing continued as scheduled.

As for the -1 form, 12121 Search tested it to the previously mentioned limits. No candidate or residue file has been submitted so no double check was done. However, the last gap for 121 -1 is large and would be an interest for double checking.

As for Peter's post, all he said is confirmed. There is no overlapping of work.

Once the current queue for port 12006 is cleared, the next available range starts at 2.2M. At this point, the search is at first pass level for 27 +1 & -1 and 121 +1.

Below are the known primes and current search limits:

Then we can jump to n=2.2M.

We still need more help! Please consider adding a core or two over to port 12006 for the next 4-6 hours. If 10 people did this, we'd definitely finish to 1.8M today.

Thank you for your consideration. :)

No, not quite but getting close. You can monitor progress here:

Basic Stats
port 12006: 27121 Server : User : Pending Tests

Once you get your first 2.2M candidate, then up to 1.8M can be considered done. Thanks for helping out.

fyi...Pending Tests gives the best picture of where the leading edge is.

Well, it's tomorrow UTC time and 1.8M is within sight. However, we didn't make it. Nevertheless, there's good news!!! 1.8M will be reached in the next 2-3 hours which gives everyone plenty of time to prepare for the Challenge.

Thank you to everyone who participated. Your help is greatly appreciated. Good Luck on the Challenge!
