I would appreciate if people could test the next release (3.2.4) of PFGW for Windows. I think that it will be faster than genefer for GFN testing. 3.2.4 has a change that is specific for GFN testing. You can get 3.2.4 from here: http://openpfgw.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/openpfgw/

If it is faster, than I will modify PRPNet to use PFGW instead of genefer. I need people who run Windows and Win64 to post the times for these tests:

6631340^256+1
5386302^512+1
4376378^1024+1
3563456^2048+1
2891508^4096+1
2409664^8192+1
151902^16384+1
1915122^16384+1
177444^32768+1
1519380^32768+1
1266062^65536+1
157476^65536+1
52186^131072+1
70000^262144+1

for genefx64, genefer, genefer80, and PFGW 3.2.4. If you also post the hardware that you have used for the test. Do not worry that PFGW and genefer have different residues. If PRPNet is to make the switch it will be all or nothing, i.e. all PFGW or remain all genefer.

Note that these tests are important for the long term viability of the GFN project on PrimeGrid. It appears that the GFN project is running into many roundoff errors with genefer. I can modify PRPNet to use PFGW when that occurs, but I suspect that PFGW is always faster than genefer. If so, then genefer support will be removed from the next release of PRPNet.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark

Can you confirm that I understood the instructions and am on the right track. I named the file test.txt.

So far I've got:

pfgw test.txt

I'd like to know before I continue on my Q9550 with Win XP 32-bit SP3 as it seems the tests will get quite long!

Yes, you are on the right track. Of course I will also need the genefer numbers as well. You should be able to use the -q option with genefer to easily test these numbers.

Q9550 @3+Ghz, Win XP SP3 32-bit.

Times for Genefer, Genefer80, PFGW 3.2.4
2409664^8192+1 : 34 vs 66 vs 152 sec
151902^16384+1 : 115 vs 222 vs 380 sec
1915122^16384+1 140 vs 269 vs 620 sec
177444^32768+1 494 vs 930 vs 1563
1519380^32768+1 582 vs 1096 vs 2745

This suggest that PFGW is slower for tested Ns.
Genefx64 would be even faster (but only suitable for lower b)

Genefer is somehow limited and can't do high b so we still need PFGW...IMHO.
For example N=8192 must use PFGW in order to complete to 100M.

Those results are interesting. I had done some tests with a Core 2 Duo and it appeared that PFGW was faster. I'll need to do some further testing on my own.

I would still appreciate additional results.

This is what I have so far.

Q9550 @2.8Ghz, Win XP SP3 32-bit.

Times for Genefer, Genefer80, PFGW 3.2.4
2409664^8192+1 : 40 vs 77 vs 153 sec
151902^16384+1 : 136 vs 260 vs 382 sec

52186^131072+1 : 9730 vs 19588 vs not yet complete

Hope this helps. It is clear that PFGW is still substantially slower than Genefer on my set-up.
