1) Message boards : Number crunching : Father's Day Challenge (Message 66815)
Posted 2615 days ago by Profile MartyProject donor
Something really wrong with the send/receive times of the wus.

(This isn't necessarily for you, as I suspect you already know this, but it may help others.)

Also, be aware that the BOINC client shows times in LOCAL time, and the PrimeGrid website shows time in UTC time. That's pretty obvious if you're on the other side of the planet, but not quite as obvious when the times only differ by an hour or two.

But when the Projects Clock say's the Challenge has started shouldn't you be able to download the Wu's & have them count no matter what the Local Time is. If that isn't the case & you have to wait 2-3-4 Hr's before the Local Time say's 2PM like yesterdays Challenge start Time your at a disadvantage ... IMO

The countdown shows the time according to your host clock and not according to the server clock. If the host clock is running faster or slower than the server, which happens a lot for example on virtualized hosts (VMware ...), than it doesn't show the correct challenge start and stop times. By the way, the server probably runs on Internet time (NTP) or at least close to it.

The UTC time for the server shown on the PG frontpage (slightly left and above of the countdown clock) is the only relevant clock in regard to valid download times or not.

I always check shortly before a challenge if my hosts shows the same time as the PG frontpage to avoid any problems there. If the clock of the host differs i synchronize the host to internet time (date and time settings on Windows)

I also would like the PG for the great challenges and their effort to make them run smoothly. Thanks a lot. I has been a pleasure, as usual.

Did you check, what i wrote in post 59044?

does the ati task in "slot 7" mean you have 7 other tasks from another project already running?

Shouldn't matter since it's actually asking for CPU work:
11/3/2012 1:33:13 PM PrimeGrid Requesting new tasks for CPU and ATI

Nonetheless, Barblovesroses, if you have other tasks running suspend those projects (for the CPUtasks only) just to make sure only PG is requesting work.

Do you also have a CUDA project selected for the used location, regardless of not having a Nvidia card in this host?

AFAIK you must select at least one project for CPU, ATI and CUDA for each in used location preferences and control the usage of CPU or GPU by the "Use CPU/Use ATI GPU/Use NVIDIA GPU" switches.

Edit:
This is what i have for my used location (no GPU used at PG)

Resource share
Determines the proportion of your computer's resources allocated to this project.
Example: if you participate in two BOINC projects with resource shares of 100 and 200,
the first will get 1/3 of your resources and the second will get 2/3. 100
Use CPU
Enforced by version 6.10+ yes
Use ATI GPU
Enforced by version 6.10+ no
Use NVIDIA GPU
Enforced by version 6.10+ no

There is enough 321 LLR work, as can be seen on the PG main page:

7) Message boards : Prime Sierpinski Problem : Credit Cap? (Message 57472)
Posted 2901 days ago by Profile MartyProject donor

But that method only works if you can accurately predict how much processing each WU will consume. With LLR, there isn't an accurate way to do that because it optimizes the calculations which results in unpredictable jumps in computation time. Furthermore, the program behaves differently on different CPUs because it's optimized at the assembler level for various CPU architectures. It's therefore impossible for the server to predict how long it will take to compute.

Well another way could be to somehow count the real computation step done be the client (e.g. number of FFT calculations or depth of those...) and assign those steps a certain credit value. The number of steps could be reported when the WU finishes, ideally somehow encrypted to prevent foul play, and then the server could assign the credit. I neither a very good programmer nor a really good mathematician to guess on the implementation effort or even the feasibility for something like this for PG, but as far as i know it's way it's done at some other projects.

@admins: Thanks for the quick adjustment of the credit cap. Really appreciated.

Have we hit a credit cap here? I got 6,000 for all my last WUs.

Nicely aged WU as well:

10) Message boards : Seventeen or Bust : Side bets on wingmen? (Message 54953)

This one is on the 6th host beside mine and looking at the stats of the current running host i'm not very hopeful that it completes there. :(

WU was initially sent on 21 Jan 2012.
