11) Message boards : AP26 - AP27 Search : 400 series Nvidia drivers slow down AP search (Message 122713)

Try DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to clean previous/any driver version before installing new one.

Thanks I tried that but I'm still getting the same error message...

12) Message boards : AP26 - AP27 Search : 400 series Nvidia drivers slow down AP search (Message 122679)

Wow the 400 series driver is a pig of a thing...

I went from 390.65 to 416.34 and the run times on my GTX1080 went from 1250 sec to 2200 sec!... I've gone back to 390.65.

The same thing happened on my Windows 10 PC with a GTX970, BUT it will now not let me roll back to the older driver or anything in the 300's

It will only let me install 411.63 or above, anything older and I get this message:

'This Nvidia graphics driver is not compatible with this version of Windows'

and

'This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware'

Any suggestions for how I can get 3xx back on my Win 10 machine?

Thanks

No, you cant be your own wingman.

And Williamd007 , dude it might be time to reconfigure your PC's, you have aborted 2059 tasks and now have 2950 in progress, I'm sure most of them will be aborted too....

The problem is people who download too many tasks and don't abort them, because then the wingman has to wait for the machine to time out to see if a result is valid.

We were talking about them only, I guess. The new wingman won't be happy if he/she's participating to TdP.

I'm not happy for this: http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=555815679

Yes that host has aborted over 1000 tasks

Its very frustrating when you're the '2nd' wingman, there is zero chance of finding a prime with those tasks.

I've had a few from these wingmen:

ID: 531276, 298 aborted and 730 in progress
ID: 493402, 379 timed out and 547 in progress
ID: 520008, 414411, 917353 (same user), 840 aborted

You need plenty of luck here!

15) Message boards : Number crunching : Delay sending tasks? (Message 114286)
Posted 597 days ago by Profile David Steel
It seems most tasks are sent out within one minute compared to your wingman. (vice/versa)
But some are sent out 5 - 10 minutes after, or even longer.
This can definitely be the difference in finding a prime or being the double checker as GFN can be done in 2 mins or less.

This GFN16 was sent to me 15 mins after my wingman:

PPSE 29 mins after:
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=554440160

MEGA 36 mins after:
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=553774952

Not a complaint, just interested to know why this happens?

Thanks

Because of the huge L2 cache of your E5's, running 8 tasks of PPSE per CPU will be the most efficient (in terms of throughput).

Yep, I tried the other configs, nothing got close to the times the normal setup had. (no app_config and 1 task per core)

Don't use multi-thread mode on PPSE. Units are too small to scale. I wouldn't use it on anything smaller than MEGA

Ok just been testing this with MEGA and I'm getting the same results as PPSE...
E5-2670 x 2 (16 cores running at 90% in BOINC settings)
Without the app_config, 14 tasks at once = 6000 secs each
With the app_config, 2 tasks at once (1 per CPU) = 2300 secs each
Also tried 4 at once and it wasn't much better.

I also test MEGA on another PC with the app_config
i7 990X (6 cores running at 90% in BOINC settings)
Without app_config, 5 tasks at once = 10,000 secs each
With app_config, 1 task = 1860 secs
So this PC is more efficient running with the app_config

But the dual 2670 just doesn't like the app_config setup.
Unless MEGA is still too small?
Anyone else with a dual setup have some suggestions?
Thanks

Thanks axn, that got it working.
Yes I was using Options>Read config file but I was trying it with everything set on 16.

It's now running 2 tasks at the same time, 1 per CPU.
The problem now is its slow...

Running PPSE without the app_config I was doing 14 tasks at once and the run time was 1150 secs each or about 42 tasks per hour.
With the app_config, doing 2 tasks at once it's 350 to 400 secs each or only about 20 tasks per hour.

I would expect it to be as fast or a bit faster with the app_config, is there another setting I should be looking at?

The E5-2670's are 8 core each and I have hyper-threading turned off so the system is currently running 16 cores, with HT on it would be 32 threads.

I've looked in the main BOINC directory and the www.primegrid.com directory, only the app_config is there.

I've only got app_config in there, don't see the other two?

<app_config>
<app>
<name>llrPPSE</name>
<fraction_done_exact/>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app_version>
<app_name>llrPPSE</app_name>
<cmdline>-t 16</cmdline>
<avg_ncpus>16</avg_ncpus>
</app_version>
</app_config>

Thanks Anthony, I've got it working perfectly on another PC running a single CPU.
Just cant get it to work properly on this dual CPU PC...

I've tried 1%, 10%, 15%, 51%, 100%.
Nothing changes except it downloads more tasks but it will still only run 1 at a time.
I've tried max_concurrent on 1 and 2 and also removed it, the 2nd task wont start, grrrrr.....
Anything else I can try?
