1) Message boards : Generalized Fermat Prime Search : Genefer CPU WUs don't pause when BOINC says pause (Message 55767)

Upgrading to BOINC 7.0.25 won't solve your problem. GFN CPU is the only project I think I've ever seen this behavior.

I think that might be caused by Boinc's "panic mode". Usually, Boinc thinks that genefers will take hundreds of hours to complete, way beyond the deadline, so it keeps crunching them even if suspended, unless boinc client is restarted. I've seen that happen with other wu's, from different projects (Einstein@home, I think).

No, it's not panic or high priority mode, since BOINC believes the WU is suspended due to computer use. It's just that the WU doesn't suspend when told to do so.

I'm currently running some CPU Genefer WU as part of the challenge.

I have an i7 that is running BOINC 6.12.34 on Windows 2008 Server that is set to NOT allow computing while the machine is in use.

The PG-Genefer WU's do not pause when start using the machine, BOINC thinks they are paused, but a check with Task Manager shows that the 6 WUs are still using CPU.

The GeneferCUDA WU's, however do pause.

WU from other projects that have been running do stop using the CPU when the machine is in use.

Stopping the BOINC client does cause the running processes to go away, but I have seen the CPU pegged because BOINC restarted some other projects instead of the PG Genefer units.

I'm planning to upgrade the BOINC client to the v7 stream but just thot folks would want to know about this issue.
3) Message boards : Problems and Help : Please extend GCWSieve CUDA time limit. "Maximum elapsed time exceeded" because GCWSieve tasks now take longer. (Message 55345)

Just upgraded to the 3xx series of drivers from nVidia and I've been getting this "Maximum time limit exceeded" message on most, if not all my gcwsieve WUs.

The time varies in how soon the WU gets aborted.

Running with BOINC client 6.12.34

And no, I can tell boinc to update all I want, but it still will not ask for or upload any wu's till the cool down time limit has been reached.

How about BOINC-Manager Menu View -->Advanced, Then go to Tab Transfers, click on upload-task and click button Retry Now? Works for me :)

Exactly! That's why I mentioned it. You can always override the "project backoff" by asking the transfer to be retried. And it usually goes thru just fine!

So, don't blame PG for BOINC's behavior. You can get your WU's reported and you can get more downloaded.

Now, if it's worth it due to no stats update, that's another question!

I'm sitting here with 30 wu's that can not be uploaded and boinc is saying its delaying request for 6 hours. 6 hours I cant upload or download any wu's. Well good luck with the race everyone. 6 hours with no wu's is unacceptable in my book.

I'm not upset, I'll still be crunching Primegrid, but I'm off to another project till the race is over.

Don't blame PG for this problem, it's BOINC trying to cope with a short outage.

You can tell your BOINC clients to retry the upload and once complete, will download more work...

There's been no update of the challenge standings from the main page for an hour. Hadn't noticed how often the update is being run, but from previous challenges it was usually 15 minutes.

The time at the top of the page shows last updated 22:30 UTC.

Just curious.

7) Message boards : Problems and Help : No work available - but "get any subproject" set to "Yes" (Message 15826)
Posted 4875 days ago by computerguy09
I'm a long time PrimeGrid user.

I have a Quad core machine running Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit. Now running BOINC 6.6.29

Recently put PG back in the work queue.

Had PPS-Sieve as exclusive sub-project for a few days.

Periodically, I get "No work available for the applications you have selected" error message when requesting work.

Added several other sub-projects, and have checked the "Get work from other sub-projects when no work is available" flag.

Still getting the error message periodically with "No work"

Now, I'm out of work for PG on this box. No long term debt or short term debt for PG.

I'll add my congrats to all participants.

I'll also again ask about the stats and the last hour. I know my personal stats for the challenge haven't changed since the 17:15 update, and I know for sure that I returned some WU's in the 17:30-18:00 timeframe that didn't get added to those totals.

9) Message boards : Problems and Help : Error when trying to change PG preferences (Message 11195)

When I click on the "PrimeGrid Preferences" under "Your Account", I get this error message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_IS_EQUAL, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or '{' or '$' in /home/boinc/proj/html/project/ on line 195

This morning, one of my crunchers is getting

9/22/2008 7:54:39 AM 1059 Message from server: No work is available for LLR (Woodall)

One of my machines gets the same - actually since Friday, as I could find out.
It doesn't matter if I change the subproject, just the text reported changes.
(For the time being I set this one to PPS LLR)

I tried everything to come round the problem, but no success at all (deleting PrimeGrid and re-joining the project, un- and reinstall BOINC....)

It's only ONE machine out of some, but this one shows the problem consequently.

Even more strange: After re-installation ONE single WU was downloaded and processed, all subsequent job requests were denied with the same message.

Last time I successfully got a WU from PG for this host was at 17:23 (GMT-4) on 9/19.

This is a dual-core AMD laptop, running CPU Limited to 90% (and has been doing that for at least a week!), and I just noticed today that only one core was busy with BOINC. I've set all the other projects usually running on this machine to No New Work during the challenge.

Other hosts on my account appear to be getting work.

I discovered the issue, which was a preference to keep at least 1.5 GB free on disk space. I had recently copied a large file to my local disk, which put the free space available at 1.3 GB.

After I moved some files around to free up disk space, a WU was successfully downloaded to this box, and the 2nd CPU core is now running!

However, BOINC never told me why it wouldn't download work. And given that I was only running PG for the challenge meant that I couldn't tell if it was project specific or BOINC.
