Interested in having a go at finding a huge Prime of this category.

How can I tell if my GPU is double precision?

the card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Thanks in advance for your help :)

If I let the WU's continue (as I really don't like aborting) what credit can I expect?

3371 credits

Basically not worth the time versus the credit for CPU tasks now.

WU's aborted although I hate doing that.

Switched over to do some Proth Prime Search (Sieve) PPS (Sieve) 1.39 to boost up to silver badge as the challenge WU's currently shrubbing complete.

Having done PPS (Sieve) WU's previously, have already reached Bronze with 164K + credits. Average credit per WU was 2311.

Under preferences it advises the tasks should take: Recent average CPU time: 2:10:17

Pretty sure my PC will be capable of doing to within a 10% +/- margin.

WU's downloaded said they would take 133.??? hours.

While waiting for the first WU to commence the time dropped to 109:??? hours.

First WU in progress jumped up to 199:??? hours to completion with a slow drop down.

Been running the first WU for just shy of 1 hour and by the time I have written this message it will be over an hour. Current time to completion is now at 132:??? hours.

Questions
1. Is this a BONIC timing error?
2. If so what is the realistic time to completion?
3. Assuming this is not an error what credit can I expect?

Linkydoo's to the WU's in question

PPS sieve is mostly crunched with GPU's (both ATI and Nvidia). Average cpu times on gpu crunchable tasks (PPS sieve, CW sieve and GFN) are not a good indicator of real crunching time. I have not run PPS sieve with cpu for ages, but > 100 hours would not surprise me.

Taken from the current preferences page
Proth Prime Search (Sieve)
Supported platforms:
Windows: 32bit, 64bit (+CUDA23, AMD OpenCL1)
Linux: 32bit, 64bit (+CUDA23, AMD OpenCL1)
Mac: 32bit, 64bit (+CUDA32, AMD OpenCL1 - 64 bit only)
1 Requires AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) drivers. If APP driver not available for your card, then the ATI Stream SDK is needed.
Nvidia Windows drivers 295.xx and 296.xx should not be used.

Recent average CPU time: 2:10:17

In this case the parameters for this project have changed dramatically since I last shrubbed this project, which was pre obtaining a GPU.

If I let the WU's continue (as I really don't like aborting) what credit can I expect?

@ THESPEEKER

Looks like we had the same idea :) My GPU was on C&W throughout the challenge as well :)

Need to move onto my teams PotM to give them some extra support with the GPU, otherwise I would stay to help clean up.

Going to finish the WU's already started before moving on. Should all be completed within the next 15 hours.

Trying to understand Aborted By User.

Apart from a small handful of WU's right at the start of the challenge which I aborted, why would WU's turn up in my results page as Aborted By User.

This one occurred today while asleep and I certainly have not aborted any WU's since the challenge got under way:

Point to note on the Windows update.

If you don't carry out the update within a certain length of time it will prompt you 2-3 times until finally it will carry out the update automatically.

The automatic update will occur after about 2 months of putting it off.

However, if you are at your computer when it starts you will get a window say updates in progress computer will reboot automatically in 15 mins which will give you the chance to put it off for a while and sort out what needs to be done.

Once it reaches the automatic update stage after being put off for quite a while it will come up with the reboot screen daily after that.

Not sure what will happen if you are able to keep putting it off after that stage.

"Fortunate or unlucky"

Not made up my mind yet.

About 3pm UK time I heard a ticking sound start to come from my puter which became louder very quickly.

In a bit of a panic suspended BONIC and switched off at the mains and lost some data I had been working on for work. (great habit to get into Ctrl+S to save your files regularly while working)

Switching off at the mains I knew full well that I probably wouldn't be able to get the machine booted up again due to an intermittent checksum error which has been bugging me for months when rebooting after updates. It had shown up again on the last reboot just prior to the challenge. The MB has been back to the manufacturer and they couldn't find the fault.

Took the side off the puter and looked to see what was causing the ticking sound. Nothing obvious to be seen. Hummm.

So picked up the phone once confirmed the puter wouldn't boot and bought a new MB.

Well the upshot is it took until 9:30pm UK time to do the round trip to my supplier grab the new MB and get home. Grabbed a beer on my way through the kitchen to the office and started to prepare for installing the new MB.

Sat down cracked the tinny and thought I can't be bothered with this tonight so watched a film instead. Just come back into the office and thought I wonder???? Checked all the cabling and discovered the wire to the fan on the side panel of the box had been separated from the wire python from the PSU and dragged about 4 inches into the fan which almost cut it through. It's down to bare wire for about 2cm's. Certainly impressed by the power of this fan and don't want to get my fingers anywhere near it when its switched on. Lol. Hit the on button and hey presto the old MB booted up after quite a few jiggles to get itself sorted out.

Lucky or not so lucky. Lost over 9 hours on the challenge which has pushed me out of the points zone. Was really looking forward to the first challenge I have taken part since joining PrimeGrid and winning some points for the first time.

Fortunate the wire didn't get tangled up in the fan and blow the whole system.

You decide.

Anyway the side panel is off the box and to my great delight has dropped the temp by 6-7C :)

Gonna leave the old MB in place until the challenge has finished so I don't lose more time and maybe, just maybe with a little prayer and luck I'll be able to get back to 200th place. Fingers crossed. Wish me luck.

EXTERMINATE!

Haa Haaaa [DPC]Pyrus

That picture takes me back to my childhood hopping about on one leg behind the sofa desperate to go for a pee and ^&*% scared they were coming to get me.

Black & White telly and watching the white dot disappear when it was switched off. :)

How things have changed :)

Now entering my 56th childhood Lol
