1) Message boards : Number crunching : Planned outage for BOS and ESEA (Message 4574)
Posted 4468 days ago by Profile Bruno G. Olsen & ESEA @ greenholt
I've spent the last few days checking everything was working correctly, and it seems so. This is what happened Sunday:

Around 10 am local time, the database drive stalled once again, and I shut down the system, knowing I was going to correct things later.

Around 3 pm local time, I had moved everything to my work area, and wanted to start up to test everything would work fine when attempting to do the drive switch. But now the database drive box didn't start at all - no fan, no light, nothing. The other one seemed to start as usual. I thought it might be the power supply, so I switch to the other power supply - this time the box started, but I really didn't like the sound, so I turned it off quickly. The other box didn't like the power supply from the database drive box.

So, now I had two drives that I didn't know if I could even get working. Anyway, with two drives to switch and only two drives to replace them, I could wave goodbye to my RAID plans. The only hope I had was that it was the external boxes that were failing, not the hard drives themselves. And it turned out to be just that. So after I had copied the database drive successfully, I made the sites available again while copying the other drives - before moving things back where they belong.

For those who haven't read the BOS RSS feed, the BOS message boards or the ESEA message boards, here some info:

The hard drive containing the databases has been giving trouble these last few days. It is close to give up. I have two hard drives which was planned to be used as a replacement for the boot/system drive, but this is more important right now. So this weekend I will spend some time replacing the database drive. I will try to build a RAID with these two new hard drives, but this may take some time, as it is the first RAID I've ever made. Keeping all data/programs completely intact during the process is an extra task, and may make it take a bit longer, as I don't have a third clean hard drive to save things on. But I'll do my best to do this as fast as possible. If all things go wrong I have back-ups.

So, just so you know, the BOS site and services and the ESEA site will be down for a while this weekend.

ESEA (Earth Space Exploration Agency) is looking for more Agency Scientists.

It is obvious that research is abundant, and our supercomputer can't keep up with the current amount of processors. So, the Agency is looking for more staff and the processors that come with this additional staff.

Currently the supercomputer is operating in the mid 40 GFlop range, and we need at least 100 for the time being.

There are an unlimited amount of positions vacant - just plug-in your processors.

PrimeGrid really needs to inprove this web site. For me these stupid add in the middle should be gone...

How much could it cost to run this project 2-3K a year?

You might have that 2-3k a year to spare. We don't.

The project is running on donated hardware and internet connection (thanks, Jim!). There have been hard times because of lack of funds, for example, when hard disk crashed (once again thanks to Jim ;)). There were no funds to replace it.

Take XtremLab for example. They had a crash, and who knows if they are comming back. Now, if they had some ads on their site, that might have helped them.

The point is, clicking on the ads every two or three days does not cost you a thing, and it can really help the project. Also, ads are positioned right below the left menu and should not get into nobody's way (not sure what you mean by "in the middle"? Screenshot please?). It's not something that is adviced if you want ads to get you a revenue.

So basically all that I wrote can expressed by a few simple words: ads will not go, but I can tweak the layout if it somehow gets in the way for you.

While I personally don't mind the ads, I think this is what he means: Screen shot. Which is the issue I wanted to address: The content displacement when things get too wide for the opened browser window.

At the screen shot you can see the bottum of the left menu, at the top of the image. Then the ads, and below that the content of the page I wanted to view. Yes, you guessed it: this makes alot of people think they are looking at a content empty page, as they would originally see this.

Dare I say it? "Join ESEA (Earth Space Exploration Agency"? Ups, now I did it. Oh well, go ahead and join us - try clicking on the sig, click Join, then add primegrid to your project list, then click Join right by primegrid at the project list - then you're with a great team ;)

Thanks for that XML, I've implemented it. And broke the compatibility with BOS :)

And the one for the maintenance would be very helpful also. Now just have to wait until any project comes down :)

Yeah :) I'll fix BOS at once ;)

edit: BOS fixed ;)

Oh, for those unfamiliar with BOS, it's short for BOINC Online Schedulers, and can be found here: <a href="http://www.esea.dk/esea/bos.asp">http://www.esea.dk/esea/bos.asp</a>. When used properly it can be helpful in reducing congestion after an outage of a project

Really you should tell me what way is it now with default project checking, and I will implement that in my system. As you know, I am trying to implement PerlBOINC in such a way that it would resemble the original and add new features.

Normally when the scheduler is called by something other than BOINC cc, it responce with:

435
Incomplete request received.

You seem to be viewing this page in a WWW browser. Visit the <a href="../">main page</a>.

if the scheduler is up and not "down for maintainance. If it's down for maintainance it responce with pure xml where message is "Project is temporarily shut down for maintenance"

edit:

darn, tags are stripped. But I've saved an example at www.esea.dk/reply.txt

edit2:

right now I get pure text stating "Content-type: text/html" - no tags at all. When one of the other projects go down for maintainance, I'll grab that one for you as well ;)
