1) Message boards : Number crunching : 2020 Challenge Schedule! (tentative) (Message 136080)
Posted 19 days ago by tng*Project donor

Tour de Primes:
2/1 00:00 UTC thru 2/29 23:59 UTC
Final "Leap" stage: 2/29 00:00 UTC thru 23:59 UTC

"Leap" stage -- does this replace the mountain stage for the polka-dot jersey?

Otherwise, it's good to have shorter challenges for a change, even if I personally would prefer longer ones.

I ask that not to be argumentative, but rather because your request lacks detail and there’s a variety of ways to display such a page. Explaining what the purpose this page would be might provide some clarity.

The thought of such a thing has occurred to me. The only purpose I can think of for it is that some people might find it interesting (which could increase their interest in the project).

I did come up with some ideas. An overall display of badges could be displayed by number of badges (where two badges of any level outrank any single badge), or by badge level (where one higher badge outranks any number of lower badges). Perhaps the minimum badge qualifying for ranking could be specified in these displays. Badge rank for a single subproject might also be available, as could some sort of scoring system.

For the significant discovery badges, all I can see is a listing by number of badges, or by number of discoveries. Similarly for TdP jerseys.

I wasn't interested enough to try to code these myself, so that's as far as I got.

For manual sieving, it is, in fact, very straightforward. You reserve n ranges, open n shell command line terminals, and run the command for each reservation in its own shell. I do that on Linux, but I guess Windows works the same.
I find easier to reserve several ranges, instead of splitting and gathering a single range. And if you have fast GPU, you can reserve a much bigger range that way.

That's how I do it -- works the same on windows. Running a system with two RTX2080s, I'm running one 18 on each gpu, along with a 22 on one and a 23 on the other.

I also prefer multiple ranges to splitting a range.

I have run 3 sieve tasks per card, but ran into errors (not often, but frequent enough to be annoying). You just have to recall the command and restart the task if that happens.

Found it odd and wondered what others might have to say. I setup 2 manual sieves for GFN18 and 2 for GFN23.

When running the 23 I would think it would be much harder but the P100 I'm renting was pumping out 213-17P a day rate. When it switched over to GFN18 it cut in half to only about 100P a day.

Shouldn't 18 be a lot less demanding ?

That's backwards. GFN sieving runs faster at higher N. That's why you get less credit per P sieved at higher Ns than at the lower Ns.

If you want to know why, you'll need to ask someone else. But what you're seeing is correct. Sieving at n=23 runs a lot faster than sieving at n=18.

Still, GFN-18 seems to cap out below the capacity of a good card where large N values don't.

I'd try running 2 at once on that card (either splitting a reservation, as suggested, or just making two reservations) and see what happens.
7) Message boards : Number crunching : Suggestions for 2020 Challenges (Message 133980)

My thoughts:

Definitely a PPS-DIV challenge. Lets' push that along. Later in the year might be better, since some crunchers may drop off o\fr PPS-DIV as tasks get longer.

Assuming AP27 is to continue, an AP27 challenge.

A GFN challenge on the ones that haven't found a prime yet == currently 21-Do You Feel Lucky. I suggest making this flexible -- if we find a GFN-22 before the challenge, GFN-22 wouldn't be included in the challenge.

Also TRP, GCW, and SR5.

If it closes, is there another GPU subproject that might be activated on BOINC?
