1) Message boards : Seventeen or Bust : WU issue after resuming.... (Message 49430)
Posted 2860 days ago by Profile RHMash
Have a WU with 200+ hours of work done on it, don't remember the percentage it said was complete, but I suspended work on everything. When I resumed everything, this WU went back to 0%. As a comparison, another WU has 145 hours of work and is at 42%. BOINC has paused these tasks numerous times without any problems.

And if it adds anything else, looking at the task manager, it seems like when suspending, it didn't suspend the two tasks completely and they were still running, so in a sense, they were both running twice. Which makes sense why my temps were so high when I resumed everything.
Is there anything I should be looking for to get that progress back or is there a risk the results they both will return will be bad? I'd rather abort than wait the 200+ more hours to complete to have them return bad results....

And if it helps with anything, my 460 hasn't errored any units and its oc'd to 865/1730/1950 and voltage set at 1 v.... it stays a constant 68C crunching a genefer unit with the fan at 90%....

I've also got a 460, but I run it at stock (1350). 1730 is... a lot faster!

Last night I clocked my card to 1630. Everything ran hotter, and faster. That cut 15 to 20 minutes off the WU.

With the big WUs, overclocking like that will mean cutting a day or more off the run time. Very tempting -- but I probably still won't do it and opt for an extra margin of stability.

1730 is the max stable clock on my ASUS TOP 460 card...gain is almost exactly 20 minutes per unit. Heat doesn't exceed 68C. Above 1730 ( really 1728 in actual clock), I get immediate errors, which is likely due to actual hardware issues (clock timings, etc) since heat doesn't go up much per clock bump in my case.

I actually lowered it because of heat issues during the challenge, I had it stable at 900/1800/2000 with voltage at 1.025v but the fan would go back and forth between 80% and 100%. Haven't tested it with those settings on Genefer, but its at 875/1750/1950 stable. It's in the range where gpu usage isn't a constant 99%, but it crunches without issues and no screen lag, but I go higher and I have to increase the voltage, and I really don't want to do that with both cards in as it seems like it sets the voltage for both and the 8800 isn't oc'ed. I've been alittle iffy on running the fan at 100% for too long even though it was more likely coincidence that setting my 295 to 100% fried it 5 min later....

I'll try it out when I get a chance, right now, I'm just going with having another gpu application sending work, since the 460 is faster than the 8800, it picks up these before the 8800 has a chance, since the 8800 runs the longer GPUGrid tasks in about 24-30 hours....

Its not perfect, but it ensures the 8800 isn't always running and erroring a Genefer task....

I have alot of errored units. It doesn't show my which card ran the unit, but I suspect it's the 8800 and not the 460 that is having the errors. I don't recall any errors before adding in the 8800 for testing it out since I got it used. It's not only these units I'm seeing errors on, the gpu tasks for MilkyWay also have been erroring out since adding the 8800.

Is there a way to set the units to check if the card is compatible before trying to run it? It won't be an issue for me much longer, waiting on a few more pieces to come in for a new system and the 8800 is going in that, but for those who are running more than one card with a possible incompatible card....

trying to figure out what's with these rats and cows, I've still no clue.

Fixed your answer
Aggie The Pew (the rats / Horde) and Dutch Power Cows (the cows / Herd) are great but very friendly rivals. There is often a degree of ranter/banter/taunting between the teams. We vermin are nipping at their solid heels, usually they beat us but this time we are gnawing back. Both teams are relatively small in size, both are in the underdog position although the number of message-board-messages would suggest differently.
Either team would be delighted to have new members.

<shakes head in disbelief>
Just been recruiting for the cows.

This made my day ^^ hahaha :)
BTW: Tim, U are also welcome at the Herd ;) Try the breeze and some sunlight in the pasture, instead of the dark cavities that your currently holding up in.

PS: Rats, I hope you guys can keep off the Crunching@EVGA team, they are also racing towards ya.

I wouldn't exactly say "racing" but more like "creeping".... I don't think we'll make it....

Crunching@EVGA is pushing, but I don't think there is enough time left for us to catch those rats....

Although I've told myself I wouldn't post here without a good "recruiting post," I can't think of one right now....

Crunching@EVGA is a recently new team. Our main DC focus is over at WCG, but we have members crunching other projects, as well.... We're open to new members....

We've been around for about 2 months now, slowly moving up the ranks as we are small....

http://www.dc-vault.com/showteam.php?team=539

We had a small showing during the Winter Solstice, it was a learning experience and we have a few members prepared for the upcoming challenge.

Feel free to drop by, check out the forums and/or our rankings and see for yourself what we're all about....

If it makes a difference, the times I am seeing are more inflated for my system that runs cpu and cuda than my laptop only running cpu.... I have also noticed this about the start of the solstice challenge when the gpu tasks were increased....
