1) Message boards : General discussion : How do I look at previous attempts at a task? (Message 149622)

Thank you. That makes sense.

My main project, climateprediction.net doesn't use validation so clearly that wouldn't be an issue. I guess anyone trying to ensure they were the first rather than second person to find a prime would have to abort all tasks except initial ones ending in _0 Possible to automate with a script and boinccmd but even were I so inclined the chances of my finding one with the processing power of my GPU which is all I use for Prime Grid except when there is no work from CPDN are far too low for it to be worthwhile!

I have a genefer20 task running, task name ending in _4 which I assume follows the same convention as other projects making it the 5th attempt at the task. Is there a way to look at previous attempts to see why some/all of them failed? Clicking on the work unit shows other attempts on completed tasks. Or alternatively is there a good reason that isn't immediately obvious to me why these are not shown when I click on the work unit link?

You can also download the BOINC code and compile it yourself from git-hub

Thanks both. I am quite new to Prime Grid so despite being a moderator over at Climate Prediction I clearly have a lot to learn. It still isn't as long as the old days with CPDN where tasks could take nine months to complete on the admittedly much slower cpu's of the time.

I have a Generfer22 task that is currently estimating 76 days to completion. This is long after the deadline but at the current rate of progress it will still take over 40 days on a Ryzen7 machine. Is this particular task non-linier in its progress? I have come across tasks for other projects where the % complete is not linier with respect to elapsed time.

All tasks seem to be completing as expected now. The change in video setting is the only change I have made. Does anyone know why changing the video setting on Ubuntu for the card from prioritising quality to performance should make a difference?

Thanks have just re-enabled GPU computing and completed a short one. Also made a couple of minor changes to video settings to make card prioritise performance rather than quality. Don't have a clue if that makes any difference or not. At some point I will get a second GPU card but probably not soon.

Interestingly, I know from my old machine that with CPU tasks it is possible to get them only sent out to computers with enough memory. (the tasks in questions used about 5GB/core) and my old desktop refused to download them because it only had 4GB ram. I wonder if it is possible to do this with GPU tasks as well?

All have been different GFS. I think I will try some other projects to see what happens and then try here again.

Or perhaps not. Got a whole load more tasks with this error. I need to check which ones they are and exclude them.

Thanks,

Not that interested in challenges as most of my cpu power goes to CPDN, either main site or testing branch but there are times when they have little work available and having a GPU that can crunch after nursing a core2duo for many years with onboard graphics I am enjoying being somewhere in the top half of computers which I haven't been since I first built a machine with an AMD 386 chip many years ago!

The new machine is a trifle faster at the make stage for building BOINC from source too!
