1) Message boards : General discussion : Sony removes Other OS support from PS3 firmware. (Message 22973)
Posted 3991 days ago by Profile Krunchin-Keith [USA]
Be aware, Sony has removed the "other OS" function in the latest firmware release.

I suppose this means if you had previously installed linux, you can no longer access it after you upgrade your firmware. This was version 3.21 released April 1010.

This also means your PS3 can no longer run boinc, and that you paid for a feature you can no longer use after upgrade. You cannot go backwards.

If you do not upgrade, then other new features become usless as the old firmware will not support them.

This is a double edged sword, you can't have both.

There are 3 lawsuits being filed against Sony over this.

See this article, http://ps3.ign.com/articles/108/1088481p1.html
it has links to all the lawsuits and other material relating to this.

Please share this news with other PS3 owners and on forums on projects that have a PS3 application.

Thanksgiving - Celebrated the 4th Thursday of November.
In the United States, Thanksgiving is a four day weekend which usually marks a pause in school and college calendars. Most business and government workers (78% in 2007) are also given both Thanksgiving and the day after as paid holidays. Families and friends gather for a reunion, a day of thanks, and a festive meal.

Thanksgiving meals are traditionally family events where certain kinds of food are served. First and foremost, turkey is the featured item in most Thanksgiving feasts (so much so that Thanksgiving is sometimes facetiously referred to as "Turkey Day"). Stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, turnips, and pumpkin pie are commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinner. Often guests bring food items or help with cooking in the kitchen as part of a happy, communal meal.

In keeping with the holiday theme of giving thanks, during the socializing or meal, people talk about what they are thankful for or tell about experiences during the past year which have caused them to feel grateful.

America's Independence Day - Fourth of July.

In the United States, Independence Day (commonly known as "the Fourth of July", "July 4th" or "America Day") is a federal holiday celebrating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain.

Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, beer, picnics, baseball games, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Fireworks have been associated with the Fourth of July since 1777.

read more about it in the wiki which explains history, interesting facts and how we celebrate this day.

One of the long-standing traditions of distributed computing projects is the formation of teams.

Not just a tradition, a little healthy competition encourages active participation, to the general gain of the project.

Team USA was created to show we have American pride and that good ol' American know-how is still a reality.
If you're a patriotic American, this is the team to join.
If you're not an American at all, you're still welcome.
This has always been a country with open arms.

Oops,

I hate even to post this, I guess you'll have to fire me.

I found a small, very small, tiny problem.

When connecting a host to PrimeGrid, the default computer location, does not register correctly. I have mine set to "work" under preferences on PrimeGrid and after connecting two hosts which are normally "work" hosts and one that is normally "School", they all had "home" for the PrimeGrid venue. After changing it on the website under the host settings to "work" or "school" the host would get the correct settings for resource share. I guess that the one thing I didn't test before. All other aspects of the venue and preferences are still working correctly since my post 9 days ago.

Sorry about that.

Well in honor of being user of the day I just donated a memory chip. Why, because I've had a massive head-ache all day so I picked something memory related also that was within the spare money collecting dust in my PayPal account.

I can't think of a good reason as to why or why not PG exsists, maybe later if I feel better.

Anyway enjoy the contribution.

Well, we ran a few tests on the test project, seemed to perform correctly. But you're our best tester for the preferences :)

Let's hope it stands the test well :)

When I resumed PrimeGrid, host correctly updated all general prefereces at PrimeGrid. So no blanks under home-school-work anymore.

I changed the venue for that host at PrimeGrid and then the host correctly showed the new venue and used the new resource share from PrimeGrid.

I updated the home preferences at PrimeGrid. Several hosts showed that the General Preferences had changed, using the new Preferences from PrimeGrid and keeping thier exsistsing venue setting.

I then verified that one of the hosts updated the preferences correctly at LHC.

I then changed the General Preferences at MalaraControl Alpha, saw that a host downloaded this new set and then uploaded back to PrimeGrid these correct preferences.

I see on another host that it downloaded the new preferences from PrimeGrid, I had set processors from 2 to 1, so it ran benchmarks and then when the change was made at MalariaControl, I changed the 1 back to 2 cpus, it reconized those and ran benchmarks again as it is suppose to do.

My hosts are reconizing MalariaControl as the last set changed, which is correct. Not as before where PrimeGrid would take over even if it was not the last one updated.

All is working as it should be and no corrupting of values or taking over of the preferences as before.

I've seen no problem in the last five days.

You passed all tests 100%

Thanks for the excellant Christmas Present.

I'm back, sorry to dissappear but have been busy with other alpha projects. I saw your update to the preferences and am testing now.

So far so good. 1st client correctly uploaded venue preferences to PrimeGrid, which now shows preferences under all four venues, something that did not happen before.

I have a simple way to tell if they get clobbered as I have made my resource share 1 for default on all projects and my resource shares for home-school-work are greater than that on all projects. If any project resorts to default it is easy to see something is not right. I will keep a close eye on it and resume some more hosts over the next few days and run some other tests for you. Let you know if anything goes wrong or right.

Thanks for the Christmas present. Actually this is good timing as most everything else is sort of on hold at the moment leaving me with nothing important to do.

Happy Holidays to all.

[Edit]
And I should say host remained set to home with the resource share for home and did not revert to default as before.

Bad News

Part of the original problem I reported has resurfaced. Where PrimeGrid believes it has the latest set of general preferences and overwrites the ones on my hosts but only with the 'default preferences' and empty sets for home-school-work. The hosts venues, probelm which you fixed, remain correct, but because there are now no preferences for that venue, the host defaults to the default set. This is causing problems as hosts will re-run the benchmarks becuase now they think they are only required to use 1 cpu instead of 2 and then they are only working at half capacity with a full cache for 2 processors so if unnoticed, they will eventullay go into EDF and sometimes still not have enough time to complete the laod. Some will error out workunits because the host now thinks it has a different disk requirment and it does not have enough room. And of course they are not using the resource share I wan't which is also confusing the core client when it changes. I didn't notice some of these effects before but I'm sure they were there. Also then the host infected will update my general preferences back at Predictor which will eventually filter back to all the other hosts as they then get the information that new preferences have been stored at PrimeGrid and will retrieve the wrong missing preferences also.

I had no problems for many days. I think this resurfaced on the 8th but can't be totally sure. I got all the hosts reset to use Predictor again and earlier today everything was ok. After PrimeGrid came back up I started having problems again. I think to it may have to do with 'manual' updates, which I do not do often, but did some just moments before this was noticed again.

I added a quick fix to the scheduler to send host venues, but without settings to them (no time for that yet, I will come to it at the beginning of the next week or even this weekend). Might just help temporarily.

This part of not sending the settings is urgently needed as I'm sure this is not just messing with me, but with a lot of PrimeGrid users, some of whom may not know this is happening. I assume that is what you are refering to and is the same as what I'm refering to.

I use all three venues for different sets of my hosts and there is no way I can make the default be general enough to not cause a problem on any one set when this happens.

This leaves me to have to deplete my PrimeGrid work units so I can suspend hosts from communicating with PrimeGrid until this is fixed as it is causing loss of work and productivity. I don't want to abort the work I have.
