I think this is unfortunate, but its up to each project to do what they want.
I don't like the description of "DDOS Attack" though, Gridcoin is not a single entity it's a collection of individuals, individuals were downloading stats for the purpose of accessing the stats, not to cause an attack. It so happens that the concept of decentralization is critically important in cryptocurrency, to stop cheating as it happens.
