100% of my CPU isn't being used as well as my task manager in windows 10 has to what appears to look like a green leaf and it says suspended next to a few tasks?

I put 12.5% cpu to be used in boinc as that's the only way I see I can do 1 at a time.

Hi, I followed all the steps but still see 4 tasks running at once.

I want to make a new build, but with no GPU. I want to do CPU only tasks(preferably the longest ones). As of now, I have an i7 2600k OC @4.2 GHz, 16gb of ddr3 ram computer I got from a friend. But I see my i7 2600k showing it's age now because, on the focus project of prime grid, I'm told it's 6-7 days before it completes.

Before going over what to buy (will do in a sec), let's make sure you're getting the most of your current hardware. From the looks of it, it seems you're running 8 tasks at once, which is just about the worst way you can go about crunching SOB tasks. For starters, turn off HT in BIOS, it will make tasks go twice as fast. Or, if you can't / don't want to, at least set BOINC to use only 50% of your CPUs.

Next, if you want tasks to go much faster and thus have higher chance to be the primefinder, but don't mind a little loss in overall performance, you can use LLR's multithreading option. With this, you can have multiple cores working on a single task rather than on separate ones, and depending on a bunch of factors, it can range anywhere from a big decrease to a a big increase in overall throughput; regardless, individual tasks end up being faster, so it is rather desireable. Take a look at how to set it up and play with it for a bit to figure out how many cores per taks you should set - I recommend 4 for you, if you leave HT on, or 3 if you disable it.

So I'm posting to ask people who have more experience what CPU should I buy? how much ram should I get? right now I am focusing on the focus project "Seventeen or Bust LLR (SOB)"

I am hoping to build this myself sometime early next year depending on the price it may be sooner. As of now, I cannot think of a budget, so I'm open for any price. Hopefully, though I won't have to pay over 1k for a pc without a gpu, though. Even building it myself.

For starters, do you plan to do anything inn particular with this PC, other than Primegrid and general daily driver activities? If so, it would be nice to know and try to take those into account.

Hi Rafael,

Sorry for the late response. I've had a lot going on.

How may I go about setting multiple cores per task? (LLR multithread) I use this PC for daily use on the internet, but would like to make better use of my cpu with primegrid. I used to game.

Hello all,

it has been a long time since I've been here and on the forums, so I'm a bit rusty.

I want to make a new build, but with no GPU. I want to do CPU only tasks(preferably the longest ones). As of now, I have an i7 2600k OC @4.2 GHz, 16gb of ddr3 ram computer I got from a friend. Any help I appreciate. Thank you.

Did you shutdown the BOINC manager completely from the notification area?

Yes

I did everything such as converting it to an xml file, i used exactly what you typed on the other thread, i closed and re-opened boinc several times. no luck still.

Suspend every but 1 task and open up task manager.; how much CPU usage does the primegrid_cllr process show? If the app is indeed using multithreading, it should either about 50% (given that your i7 has 8 threads).

I'm getting 8-9% use

I have 4 cores per task but have 4 tasks running with my cpu usage set to 50%

is this alright?

After setting up the app_config, did you close and reopen BOINC? If you don't do that, it won't realize it's supposed to use multithreading. After doing that, you should rather see BOINC do one task a time, with or without Hyper Threading enabled.
