1) Message boards : AP26 - AP27 Search : CUDA application released (Message 20326)

NVIDIA has released “Nexus” beta for Visual Studio http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nexus.html

Would be interesting to see if this new VS windows optimised CUDA Toolkit would improve the CUDA application under windows.

Try using the CUDA 190.34 driver for Vista 32 instead of the GTX295 driver 190.62 http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html (may need to unistall the existing driver first)

I assume this is a problem on you machine with the GTX295 ? Do you have a single GTX295 installed or 2 ? When you start BOINC what does the log say about the number of CUDA diver, version, compute capability etc ?

Do you have any onboard graphics on your MOBO ?

In your BIONC manager, under the Advanced|Preferances menu item it should open a dialog box "BOINC Manager - Preferances"

Select the "network usage' tab, and change the "Additional work buffer" down to something like 0.1 days, select "OK", that should close that window.

Again in your BIONC manager, under the "Activity" menu item, select "Run based upon preferances" to use the local preferances you just modifed.

It will take some time for this to clear the backlog you already have, once cleared you should have a small queue of AP26 tasks.

I got similar errors when the screen saver and AP26 were trying to use the GPU at the same time.

My simple solution under windows was to turn the screen saver off (I have mine set to blank) if using the GPU for AP26 under windows.

Any chance of increasing the time between the report deadline and when the tasks are sent out again ?

Seen results are being accepted after the initial report deadline which is okay, however the server is sending the task out again almost immediately after the initial report deadline.

E.g.

Received 17 Dec 2009 3:20:51 UTC
Report deadline 17 Dec 2009 3:01:35 UTC

The server created a new task again almost immediately after the initial report deadline (12 seconds).

This results in redundant results.

Bios recognizes the card as present.

lspci | grep -i vga
returns
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3300 Graphics
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1)

The ATI is MoBo based and is working fine with my display.
The GTX will just be for CUDA based apps.

Disable the on board ATI in the BIOS so that the only display adapter present is the GTX, the drivers in my view are not loading as it is seeing the ATI device, CUDA will not run on the ATI.

My experience in the past is the only way to make this work is to have a motherboard with a GeForce 9-Series mGPUs and the GTX in the PCI slot, both are CUDA compatible and the drivers will load for both devices.

I have crunched a few of these work units under Win64 on the AMD.

Under my user profile, the Cullen/Woodall Prime Search (Sieve) does not come up at all. I cannot remotely look at what has been done.

Should they come up under "Your Account" like "Proth Prime Search (sieve) tasks" etc does ?

P.S. PSA does not come up either.

You seem to have 8 sockets with a total of 32 Cores.
But why go for Windows? Isn't it a bit costly?

Yes the machine is mine, as I indicated earlier, I have only got 4 CPUs turned on due to cooling issues. The O/S and BOINC are only reporting the CPUs that are powered up. Each CPU is an AMD 8360 with 2 GB of ram per CPU.

I do have other roles for the machine that makes me use Windows at this stage.

Is it really one board with 8 sockets?

As far as the OS is concerned yes. Physically it is a Tyan s4985/m4985 motherboard setup, this is what the block diagram looks like.

Okay, this host only had 4 physical CPUs and 4 logical - but only two sockets and therefore Windows XP was satisfied.

Your system appears to have a single CPU as defined by Microsoft licence agreement, they define it as "A single chip that contains one or more cores and threads". The maximum number of physical CPUs/sockets under XP is 2.

Motherboards with dual LGA1366 sockets are available, two quad core Xeon W5500/X5500/E5500/L5500 series CPUs could be installed. XP would only see this as being a two processor machine, however task manager would see all the cores and threads (16).

My PC has 8 physical F1207 sockets, 8 physical AMD 8360 quad core CPUs. If I were to load XP on that machine, it would ignore 6 of the physical CPUs/Sockets.

AMD demo a dual G34 socket PC last month, 24 cores (2x12 core 45 nm Magny-Cours CPUs and 24 DDR3 DIMMs), it used about the same power as 4x4 core 65 nm Barcelona CPUs.
