1) Message boards : Number crunching : Badges III (Message 128424)
Posted 89 days ago by Profile Pooh Bear 27Project donor
Just noticed I got my double silver badge in GFN. Go me! Need to shut down most systems for a while, as I am on a new journey in life. Moving after 20 years into a temporary living quarters while we get a few things back into semi stabilized chaos will have most of my life in storage for the foreseeable future.
2) Message boards : Number crunching : Bad Hosts (Message 127114)
Posted 127 days ago by Profile Pooh Bear 27Project donor
Being the owner of a bad host once in a while (I hate Windows automatic updates and deciding to boff a video driver). I can say that I understand the frustration. I also know that because both the CPU and GPU were doing work, the CPU was not failing, so the GPU was being fed regularly as I was sending back successful work on the CPU. I know the backend of this software is designed to not care about bad hosts, because it's just a quick couple bit record in the scheme of things. It is meant to work around these issues, instead of dealing with them. The issue is what ways to deal with them, many might call foul on. The current way seems to be the least problematic to most. You are going to be either the first or second wingman in most task anyway. Time on these tasks have not a lot of relevance. It will be found when it is found. A lot of it is luck, mainly. I mean even the fastest devices are not always first, because sometimes they get too many tasks and do not return them first. We are all here to do a small part in a large project, and that is what I feel I am doing, even when I find nothing, I am helping others find things, because I helped removed the stuff that was not a find.
3) Message boards : Number crunching : NEW FEATURE: Task links for primes! (Message 114591)

Thanks, due to some eyesight issues currently (cataracts), reading everything has been hard, surgeries were scheduled, then my insurance announced it dropped my physician and I have to start the process over. I hate being not able to see correctly and missing a lot of information I would have normally seen. Still a nice feature!

I saw a new feature, the (1st) if you are initial completing of a task. I like it.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : New badges for TDP (and more)! (Message 113658)

The page you linked is the one that I had in mind. The issue with text boxes on the badges themselves is that the text does not stretch much even when you have the browser in large type. So sight impaired people cannot see them. Since currently I have limited sight due to cataracts, I cannot read that small type. The surgeries are scheduled, but due to insurance limitations I have to deal with this for a couple more months as they keep getting worse. It always has bothered me that it is small and harder to see in normal sighted time, now it's even more frustrating.

Should not the BADGE list page list what the new badges are for? When you click one of the new badges it just goes to the top of the prime list, but it does not tell what those badges are for. So the new ones could nicely be also listed on the bottom of the of the page that actually says badge list page.
7) Message boards : Problems and Help : Help with downloading new tasks (Message 112432)

Correct, this is a BOINC configuration, not a PrimeGrid. BOINC will not download tasks for a project that has suspended items.
8) Message boards : Seventeen or Bust : The SoB Double Check has begun (Message 111966)

It is interesting is it OK if "CPU Time" = 70.26 sec but "The Whole Time" = 230,176.34 sec

in the following task:

http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=544970000

Host that ran that unit.
http://www.primegrid.com/show_host_detail.php?hostid=904671
Note that it is FreeBSD, so the BOINC client had to be modified to work. If you look at all the tasks, the CPU time is very low, which means that it is not measuring the correct information in that build. The RES is matching, and since it's just a cosmetic issue, the units are still valid.
9) Message boards : Problems and Help : payout credits (Message 111858)
Posted 580 days ago by Profile Pooh Bear 27Project donor
BOINC was created by Berkeley in an effort to allow shared/grid computing They were the ones that developed SETI. SETI originally basically counted a credit system as they felt that users should see something for their time. When BOINC came along they updated that system so other projects could use the program and give people something for their time.

The credit is mainly worthless, except bragging rights, seeing how well you do compared to your friend, team, etc.

There are competitions at times based off that credit on many of the projects and by 3rd parties. Again most of those competitions are for fun/no real prizes.

If there were no credit, it is believed that less people would do the work, since they cannot show anything for their work. I guess I would probably own less computers myself if it were no credit, just keeping a main computer and maybe a laptop for travels.
10) Message boards : Number crunching : Pierre de Fermat's Birthday Challenge (Message 111651)

Credit for the challenge itself is after you return it, if started during the challenge. If the unit turns out wrong, that credit is reversed at at that time.
