1) Message boards : Seventeen or Bust : Proposal: A new SierpiƄski problem (Message 140305)
Posted 18 days ago by Profile Pooh Bear 27Project donor
I was reading the routing issues happening earlier and I suspect it may happen again. We see peering issues and probable web communication blocking a lot in today's world. The issue is the bots are not smart and will stop one way traffic on a site it think might be threatening. As we know BOINC projects have very random code in the files, some of it sets off malware, defender and virus alarms. If those are hit enough through the detectors at the ISP, they will block a site. Hence your ability to still ping/trace the site because that is still allowed, but coming back is blocked. One way block as not to make you suspicious. Having worked in network security I had this happen on private VPN connected lines. I had to prove it was the ISP and it was not always easy to get the block removed, since I was not the owner of the connection that was being blocked.
It was good you communicated back and forth with the traces, because it showed the exact spot, which was the ISP that was blocking the incoming traffic. So the HELO made it over, but the response never made it back.
2) Message boards : Number crunching : Bad luck club (Message 140302)

Crunchi, I believe there's a grammar error there:
you meant that he/she won't get any primes, but you said that he'll "not find nothing", which mean he'll find something.
Grammar, grammar, grammar, ugh
For me, a Spanish learner, grammar is even more confusing.

I believe in this case they were using the double negative as an insight to how the project is. There is no special way to run it to get a prime and mentally arguing with your computer and the project (come on people we all do it to some degree), will give us nothing more than we already get. So, Crunchi put it in fairly accurate words, because it is not going to make a difference, either way.

Hmm what I found rather cool is the number 1 user. Rytis is of course the origin of PG!

A person who is good at delegation and keeping his eye on the main wheel.
4) Message boards : Number crunching : Long send/receive duration in SGS (Message 139883)
Posted 41 days ago by Profile Pooh Bear 27Project donor
As JeppeSN points out, making them ask and send immediately is the way to go. The reason. Sieve is just the helping to create the candidates for the Prime projects, no primes will be found, so being first has no major significance. For prime numbers, people want to have their "name in lights" even if for a few minutes, so they set up to get tasks as soon as they finish tasks. Having a cache means you are now slowing down the work. Those small units go quick.
There are more tricks. Trying to find the optimal amount of CPUs to run for the project you are working on. Since multi-threading is available, you can play and find what the sweet spot is for a project to make it run faster. SGS of course being so small might be best on 1 or maybe 2 threads, but some of the larger projects definitely do work better on multiple threads.
Some days you will see you are first 90% of the time, some day 5%. It is nothing to be alarmed at.
Good luck.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Mega Primes Stat Charts (Message 139833)
Posted 43 days ago by Profile Pooh Bear 27Project donor
No you're in. First chart (#MP), 19th from the last of the first column.

Getting old and memory is not as clear as it once was. I was looking higher in the list, because I remember getting an ESP, but not realizing it was a bit before it hit the 1M mark.
6) Message boards : Problems and Help : lots of maxErr exceeded (Message 139804)
Posted 45 days ago by Profile Pooh Bear 27Project donor
I didn't think about that this way, I'll see what I can do, or I'll live with the occasionnal bunch of errors :)
Other projects are fine on these GPU

The GPU precision used in these programs are higher density than many of the other projects, and this is the reason this happens.
You can always try doing some good cleaning of the fans, reseat the card and generally make sure there is enough airflow around the card to allow the heat to dissipate faster.

Looks nice, except I am missing from the charts?
8) Message boards : Generalized Fermat Prime Search : DO YOU FEEL LUCKY? (Message 138779)

Windows is always doing something in the background. Also, if you leave a browser up for any length of time on a page with any graphical display, it starts to eat cycles and memory. Browsers have become one of the worst enemies of being a hog.
Among other things, Windows Defender may have decided to run a full check, which can take a while. Some minor update was installed that didn't require a reboot, but did take away quite a bit of resources. Windows is Windows and who the heck knows why it does some things.

After running PrimeGrid for about 8 years, Jim and I have decided it's time to step down and get some new

When I read this at the beginning of the month, my heart felt heavy for a while. Michael and Jim have been mainstays here, helping everyone out, with super beginner questions, to some of the questions that they even had to research. They made a lot of friends, and a few enemies (hopefully none stayed that way long). They answered my questions from some of the more foolish ones that I should have looked up myself, to some fairly interesting ones.
I then took some time to review, and remembered that time changes everything. Before the Internet explosion, I helped run a BBS for about 10 years. My longest two other jobs were 11.5 and 10 years. So, I know why the changes are needed and I cannot argue with it.
As for being better, my answer is it will be different. The ambiance will never be the same. The project may excel in ways people have never even thought of, yet. We never know what will be brought to the table.
As for Jim and Michael. My hat is off to you two for doing this for so long. Both of you enjoy the newly found time you should get and spend more of it with your family and friends. Take that well needed trip to somewhere you always dreamt of.
PrimeGrid will go on.
10) Message boards : General discussion : Happy Palindrome Day! (Message 137119)
Posted 124 days ago by Profile Pooh Bear 27Project donor
The date 02/02/2020 was World Palindrome Day. Some parts of the world use Month first, some use Day first, but in over 900 years we have not had a World Palindrome Day. The last one was 11/11/1111.
So as a person who is alive today, you have seen a new Century, Millennium, and a Universal Palindrome date.
