just found a dead box

A day to go and one of my boxes is almost dead and unlikely to complete a single 321 in this competition. There's a milestone - run a box for 5 days and not have a single WU to show for it.

don't feel bad, I have a laptop that's in the same boat. I think maybe it's been hijacked by a cow or 2 and they've installed a virus on it just to slow it down.

I take it all back. My errant computer managed to finish it's first and only WU this morning. Perhaps I'll keep it as spares rather than tip it into the wheely bin as planned.

PrimeGrid admins should be aware

I'd like them to be aware that some browse this forum with the tiny screen of an iPhone. So it was easy enough for me to hit the Equinox results link by mistake just under the Leonid. I got quite excited to see I was half a million credits into the race and I haven't even finished my first WU yet :p Never mind, I'll feel pleased enough to complete the WUs that I can manage.

Other than that, I don't think there's any other deleterious effects other than making us feel somewhat obsolete. Then again, I just look at it as having the most intelligent space-heaters on the block. :)

The problem for me isn't really that they become obsolete, it's that they will not continue to work reliably without fault indefinitely. I dread to think how many perfectly good computers I've thrown out because of mysterious hardware faults. Right now it was touch and go as to whether some of my machines wanted to start up for this competition. Brandishing a sledge hammer at them seemed to help ;p

Watch the percent done and at certain times you can figure a lot closer early on in a WU such as 5% done is 1/20th so 20 x elapsed time = ? or 10% is 10 x elapsed time or 20% is x5, 25% is x4, 33.33% is x 3 and so on. Remember its not CPU time to figure but total time (wall clock) .

Thanks for this NeoMetal. My slowest machine is gradually increasing it's remaining time, over 450 hours the last time I looked, but the %age complete also seems to be rising at a rate I would expect. So I'm inclined not to abort these WUs just yet.

The 7 day review only took into account active computers. For the future, we'll add a "slowdown" factor to the 7 day average to accommodate slower machines that "normally" don't participate in the project.

What does this relate to? Does it mean that some slower machines could not take part or finish and will be able to in future?

Just a little info on run times (wall clock) and the # of WUs you could fit in during the challenge for
anyone who's curious.

The challenge is 5 days so 24hrs x 5days = 120hrs / by # of WUs = time

That would be useful if the "Remaining" in boincmgr was accurate.
