Hey guys!

I'm currently a student studying Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Wales. I have a great interest in electronics, programming and maths to some extent. I am fascinated by prime numbers which is why I have been a PrimeGrid member for so long!

As its coming up to summer time soon, I am interested in learning more about how computers are used in sieve and test prime numbers. I have an extensive programming knowledge ranging from a little bit of assembly, c and high level stuff like Java, C++ and VB.NET. I also did A-level maths so I'm not afraid to read through pages of equations etc.

I was just wondering if anyone could point me to any good printed texts about computing prime numbers or even towards a good book about prime numbers in general. I'm easy going, don't mind if its completely mind blowing stuff, I want to learn!

Thanks
Peter

Hey guys!

Its been a long time without me crunching anything, but my new desktop has arrived and is built and is now crunching FPS again! Its currently running 2 cores (on i5) and I now have the spare parts required to replace my broken quad-core hopefully it will be crunching with all 4 cores again in the next fortnight!
Just wanted to point out that FPS currently reports it only has 3 days of work remaining!

Cheers, its good to be back!

I just can't seem to keep my systems stable for long.
Now that I am away at uni and I left my dad in charge of my STEM desktop (desktop1) at home. Noticed that my daily credit took a tumble yesterday, connecting to my computer remotely showed a really buggy and distorted screen. GPU temps peaked at 105 degrees C according to SIW which means from my experience they went much beyond, maybe by 10 degrees or so. This of course caused the card to disable itself and stop BOINC processing tasks.
It looks to me like this is yet the same problem that I had before with stupid OEM only graphics cards. The fan broke, it went back to HP, the fan broke, it went back to HP and now thats it is out of warranty, maybe I will look at upgrading the card or a new build all together! Fingers crossed that nothing else was damaged, last time this happened the fan blades managed to break free from the card and got jammed in the CPU fan.
Even with no tasks running the card was idling at 94 degrees so something is wrong with it, I've shut it down for now so I won't be processing any tasks for a while, probably a month or two before I can get new parts etc.

Would someone from the lovely PrimeSearchTeam like to pick up where I left off. I seemed to be the only person running Factorial Prime Search on PRPNet these days!

Well I would imagine there is another few primes to be found from the current leading edge and his one!
I will hopefully be added another few cores to the search before the end of the year!

Noooo!
Will knock mine off the top spot :( Does this mean that we are currently testing a range that has been tested before?
