11) Message boards : Number crunching : Hash rate for RTX nerf is happening, will it affect crunching? (Message 148877)
Posted 653 days ago by Ken_g6Project donor
But what is point doing this? Solution is very simple, we all know that many rigs with 3090 crunching ETH without any problem right now. Use current driver and problem is solved, because crunchers dont need latest drivers, they dont care is few FPS more in some games...
And maybe Windows will not stay on current drivers but Linux will. So you cannot change past...

I think this is specifically about keeping the price of an RTX 3060 low. Here's a table of GPU mining efficiency. Assuming half a 3060 Ti's hash rate, a 3060 would be potentially valuable to miners at its current MSRP. But, importantly, if its price went much higher they'd shy away from it.

So who is the favourite to grab the first Prime in the mountain stage? 🤔

I'd guess somebody who bunkered, found a prime, and dumped their bunkers early. I haven't noticed a prime so far, and I'm a little late.

Can someone please ELI5 how to setup and run PRPNet-27 like user Nortech had done?

I feel like I'm missing an opportunity here...

Full instructions: https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=1215

To focus on 27, use this setting:

server=27:100:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:12006

121 would be good as a backup, I think.

server=121:0:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:12001

Tip #1: He (or she) who finds the prime FIRST is the discover of the prime. It's a competition between you and your wingman. While having a fast computer helps, your computer is only useful when it's running a task. If you have a cache of tasks sitting on your computer waiting to run, chances are your wingman will return the task before you've even started it. Setting both BOINC cache settings to "0 days" is strongly recommended. People with slow computers find primes all the time because their wingman downloaded the task yesterday but won't start running it until tomorrow. Set your cache to 0 days!

If you're going to ignore tip #1, don't even bother reading the rest. Seriously.

I think I'm going to ignore tip #1 and run projects that don't have wingmen, like PPS or PPS Mega. As a result, I didn't read the rest, so I don't know if anything else is out-of-date. ;)

But, seriously, this leads to several interesting questions. Like, can I finish more PPS tasks in a given time than I could get firsts in PPSE? Does that actually result in a better chance of finding a prime? (I.e. how much rarer are PPS primes than PPSE?) If I have a fast CPU but a slow GPU, do I get so few firsts in GFN (which does still have wingmen) that the slowdown it causes for CPU tasks means I'd be better off not using the GPU at all?

Fast double-checks mean it's a whole new world!

Did you decide to say "Good Riddance" to the discussion thread for the next challenge as well?

You're gonna need a new thread for 2021.

Ask Me how I know. ;) ;) ;)

Also, if you abort WUs on a VM, make sure to report them (click the "Update" button) before destroying the VM. I've failed to do that at least twice.

Hey, Tyler. These are nice graphs. At least comparable to SETI.Germany's graphs I can never remember the path to. But they could be even better. Can I make a request?

When I point to the graph and I see the dots showing users/teams at that point, I'd like to see lines, from those points, through the current totals of those users/teams, to the end of the challenge. At the end of those lines I'd like to see projected totals. That implies having the graph show white space between "now" and the end of the challenge, but I wouldn't mind that either.

This way I could better strategize how much power to put into PrimeGrid vs. other things like Formula BOINC, or how many cloud resources to use on a given challenge.

Thanks!

Hm, nothing for the Olympics?

I don't quite get Euler’s Constant Challenge. It's not even three days, let alone "constant". :P But, really, I don't see 1123 in anything but a Fibonacci sequence.

Your Nvidia driver is 39907, you need to update to a newer verson, several projects have cut off the use of drivers prior to 410xx so go at least that far. You do NOT need the latest and greatst driver, in fact sometimes they give problems for us crunchers but they do work very well for gamers.

The driver for my 1060 3GB is 39087. It's running WW fine.

I do need to upgrade my driver, but for me that means a new version of Linux, so I haven't done that yet.
