21) Message boards : Sieving : Help needed with CUDA CPU Load Issue (Message 25863)

If it's only running one CPU task, what Alan suggested should work -- but I suspect he's running a core i7 with 8 threads. You would want to set ncpus to 3 rather than 9. Be warned, however, that if at any time you're NOT running two GPU tasks, BOINC will run THREE CPU tasks, which will use extra memory (you only have 1 gig), and will waste a lot of CPU cycles task switching the three WUs on your two cores.

Yes, the example I describe was for a core i7 with 8 threads. I have indeed experienced the problem Michael describes when I ran out of GPU tasks (I had a 0 day work buffer at the time and was having problems obtaining new GPU work). My computer was running 9 CPU tasks on 8 logical cores and the memory load increased significantly. However, I haven't had this problem since I increased my work buffer.

If you or anyone else figures out the custom app_info approach, I'd be very interested in knowing how to set that up...

Cheers!
Alan

Hi Firestorm,

I had this same problem while running two GPUs (both had 0.52 CPU load). The CPU is actually not used as much as indicated in BOINC, and thus I had a needlessly idle core when crunching GPU and CPU tasks. To fix this, I edited my cc_config file to act as if there were 9 cores instead of 8 (go here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration for more information on creating a cc_config file).

<cc_config>
<options>
<ncpus>9</ncpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

This allowed me to run 8 CPU tasks and 2 GPU tasks simultaneously and utilize 100% of my CPU rather than the 88% it was using before.

Hope this helps...

Cheers!

I haven't been able to get work for my GPUs since the challenge started:

8/21/2010 12:42:05 AM PrimeGrid Requesting new tasks for GPU
8/21/2010 12:42:13 AM PrimeGrid Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
8/21/2010 12:42:13 AM PrimeGrid Message from server: No work sent
8/21/2010 12:42:13 AM PrimeGrid Message from server: No work is available for Proth Prime Search (Sieve)
8/21/2010 12:42:13 AM PrimeGrid Message from server: _("No work available for the applications you have selected. Please check your project preferences on the web site.")

What's going on here?

Between the Dog Days of Summer and Calendula challenges I plan on switching most of my computers (all that won't overheat, that is) to PPS and SGS llr. For every prime I find (first finder, not double checker) I will donate 5 euros. Based on my computing power and track record I anticipate finding something like 4-6 primes in a period of just over a month.

Anyway, I thought this would be a way to help the project and have a little fun in the process. Anyone want to join me? A little competition would make it even better...

Cheers!

Donation sent...I have a crown now, sweet!

I've never used Paypal before, it's fairly convenient even from Canada:)

Cool:) Unlike the primegrid challenges, I'm guessing this challenge is just a raw credit contest without focus on a particular subproject? I couldn't find much information about it other than the start date.

I guess I need to think about what project is most efficient at generating credit. Certainly one of the sieves, but which one?

Hi PST,

Check out this thread:

http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=2648

Anybody interested in participating in this challenge? If so, I think Lennart is the only one who can sign us up:

From BOINCstats:

How does a team join a team challenge?

The founder of a team can enter a team into a challenge.

The team founder (here on BOINCstats) is the person who is founder of the team in most projects. To check who is the team founder, find your team on the profile pages and go to the profile. The founder is listed on the team profile page.

The team founder has a extra section in his BAM! menu (Team founder) and in that section he will find the Challenges. Once there everything is self explanatory.

The team founder is assigned by an automated process, he can't be set manually! If your team has a separate admin account then create a BAM! account for this admin as you would for a normal user (so same email and password). Include all projects but do not attach hosts to it or use any of the managing functions other than the team functions. It will not link to any stats, only to the team it is a member of and it will show as founder, so your team can participate in challenges.

Gathering/updating user information including founder status is done once a week during the night from Saturday to Sunday! Once a week because it's stressing the project servers.

This is great news! I was worried that the primes were starting to dry up in this project...

Roughly 50 new primes to come out in the next few days, nice:) I crunched quite a bit of SGS during the dry spell so I like my odds for one!

Cheers!
Alan
