1) Message boards : Number crunching : Miscounting CPUs needed (Message 129671)
Posted 198 days ago by BobMALCS
Looking at the W10 Task Manager display I can se that under "BOINC Manager for Windows" there are 9 tasks.
- BOINC Client
- BOINC Manager
- 4 Console Window Host
- geneferocl_windows_3.3.3.2.exe (32 bit)
- llr_wrapper_8.00_windows_x86_64.exe
- primegrid_cllr.exe

geneferocl and primegrid are running as expected. llr-wrapper shows 0% cpu usage. There are plenty of other cpu only taks tasks available to run.

It looks as though BOINC (somehow) counts the llr_wrapper as using one cpu.
However, when I switch on a couple of Event Log optoin I get the following information
"21/05/2019 09:38:02 | | [cpu_sched_debug] using 1.08 out of 3 CPUs

I've no idea what is happening but whatever is happening is not good.

I have set:
Use at most 50% of the cpus (that is 3 cpus)
Use at most 100% of cpu time

I have:
Intel Core i5 Hexa 8600K (Coffee Lake-S) 3.60GHz [U0] clocked to 4.68 GHz
16 GB memory

I have allowed BOINC to use 3 cpus and 1 NVIDIA GPU.

Normally 2 cpus run 2 PPS (LLR) tasks and the gpu runs another task often from another project. So I have 3 tasks running quite happily.

However, when the gpu is used by a Genefer 21 task, BOINC only allows 1 other cpu task to run (a PPS (LLR) task).

It seems that BOINC believes that the Genefer task requires 2 cpus although it is supposed to only use 0.0763 of a cpu. I can see that only 2 cpus worth of 6 cpus is actually being used.

What's going on.

Boinc 7.14.2

Genefer 21 3.21
PPS (LLR) 8.02

Any update as to the Coding being updated to support the Newer Drivers for the GTX Graphics Cards?
Tested 417.58 Today and still double the run time from the 3xx.xx Drivers

Code changes are complete. Just waiting on the application builds.

Any sign of the application builds being done and distributed ?

So far I am unimpressed with Genefer 3.11 .
It takes 3 times longer to complete and I only get the same amount of credits as for Genefer 3.10 .
These numbers vary very little across all the tasks.

Task:671924691
Work Unit:458929626
Run Time:75.05
CPU time:71.32
Credit:23.60
Application:Genefer 32768 v3.10 (OCLcudaGFN15)

Task:671928331
Work Unit:458931516
CPU Time:225.27
Run Time:221.94
Credit:23.60
Application:Genefer 32768 v3.11 (OCLcudaGFN15)

I am also getting the very occasional 'Computation Error' for 3.11 which I never got before with 3.10

This is on a GTX 760. It is not overheating; in fact it appears to be running very slightly cooler. Driver is NVidia 358.87

8) Message boards : Number crunching : Project Preferences not working !! (Message 83385)

OK. If that's the way its coded I'll live with it.

I had thought that ticking "Use NVIDIA GPU" meant that I had a GPU available.
Then, if I had selected one or more GPU tasks, I would get sent some tasks if they were available.

I did not think it meant you MUST send me a GPU task even if I haven't selected any.

The system obviously must be able to handle the situation where there are no tasks available.

Just a thought. Is it possible to set up a dummy sub project that never has any tasks and have it permanently selected.

Anyway, thanks for the answers.

Hmmm. That doesn't explain why the PPS-SEIVE CUDA is still ticked when I look at the preferences after I have unticked it. And why should PrimeGrid pick that task as the 'default' NVIDIA task.

I would have expected PrimeGrid just to say "I don't have any NVIDIA tasks" if I haven't ticked any NVIDIA tasks.

The situation is as follows.

Login to PrimeGrid
Go to PrimeGrid Preferences
Go to Edit Preferences
Untick PPS-Sieve CUDA (Nothing else touched)
Click Update Preferences
Go to Your Account
Logout

Bring up BOINC Manager
Go to Projects tab
Highlight PrimeGrid
Click Update

A day later I am still getting PPS Sieve CUDA tasks.
I check PrimeGrid Preferences and PPS Sieve CUDA is still ticked.

So, how do I stop getting PPS SIEVE tasks ?
