1) Message boards : Extended Sierpinski Problem : 340 000 s CPU time on i7-4790K (Message 140126)
Posted 171 days ago by Werinbert
On my i7 3770k (4 core/8 thread) I have set multi-threading to 4 and left hyper-threading on. So I am running two tasks simultaneously. Not the most efficient but it works for me. But each person should run a few tests to see what settings works best for them as hardware variations can make a significant difference (AVX capability or cache size for examples).

On my Ryzen 3700X (8 core/16 thread) I set multi-threading to 4 or 8 depending on how long the tasks are expected to run. Again I leave hyper-threading on. Using 4 cores makes the computer more responsive to other projects I have going on as I am often running PG as the backup project and I prefer it not to hog my CPU resources if possible.

For GFN21/22, however, I have app_config set to use all my cores as they are monster tasks. [GPU is highly recommended, but I am a masochist.]

Suggested new name to be: Corona Chaos Challenge
4) Message boards : Number crunching : Help with reassigning CPU for GPU task pls (Message 139507)
Posted 200 days ago by Werinbert
This is a known problem with Linux drivers. They always use full CPU core. GFN application itself has almost zero CPU usage.

Workaround: and below.

Thanks for the info. I have a new Linux machine and I noticed this and couldn't figure out why things were slower than I thought they should be for a fast CPU rig. Thankfully, right now I am running more for WU_Prop hours than points but I need to get it squared away when I do start running the rig for points.

Used for PG:
GTX 1660 TI
GTX 750 TI

Used for other projects:
HD 4400
HD 5500
6) Message boards : Number crunching : odd task... (Message 139127)

never mind...I am off by a month on a very over due task.
7) Message boards : Sierpinski/Riesel Base 5 Problem : SR5 primes may take up to 10 times longer to process than composites (Message 139066)
Posted 219 days ago by Werinbert
I believe most of us are here to find primes, not just probable primes. Also I feel that we are donating our computers to do the processing whereas doing only half the work and then sloughing it off onto the PG servers defeats that purpose.

You dirty rats!!!

I am trying to run AP27 tasks and I get sent an SR5 task. In response we called the pest control people to deal with the vermin, unfortunate they claim they are unable to come out until after next week. Coincidence? I think not.

(We actually did call the exterminator as we have rats and squirrels eating from our fruit trees.)
10) Message boards : Number crunching : Badges - Full Sets! (Message 138720)

These complete a full set of gold badges.
Now to get rid of the jaundice and find me some rosy cheeks... :-)
