1) Message boards : Problems and Help : Could not delete PrimeGrid file in BOINC folder (Message 8079)
Posted 5002 days ago by Profile DenaharProject donor
Hi all

After getting a new computer I needed to move some BOINC folder contents packages around. After exiting from BOINC I backed up a BOINC folder containing 2 part-finished PrimeGrid workunits. I will be restoring and completing these workunits at the weekend. I then needed to delete the contents of this same BOINC folder (I wanted to replace it by restoring a different BOINC package).

I have done this sort of job dozens of times, but previously the BOINC folders I deleted did not contain anything from PrimeGrid.

This time an application called primegrid_gcwsieve_1.06_windows_intelx86 which is a 22KB file in the BOINC slots folder refused to be deleted. A Windows message popped up saying that the file might be in use or might be a read-only file, and couldn't be deleted. (I had definitely exited from BOINC and there was nothing BOINC or project-related in Task manager). The file contains a Notepad text saying '01/09/08 11:02:33 ERROR: Failed to open input file `sieve.txt'.'.

In the end the only way I could eliminate this file to give me an empty BOINC folder was to send it elsewhere. At the moment it's sitting in My Documents.

Is this file supposed to be undeletable? In the past, when emptying the BOINC folder of contents from CPDN, APS, SAP, LHS and QMC, I've never encountered a file that couldn't be deleted.

Mo

The wrapper might be still active. For primegrid you need to note that there are two applications running for each workunit. In your case: primegrid_gcwsieve_1.06_windows_intelx86 and primegrid_gcwsieve_wrapper_1.06_windows_x86. The wrapper tends to run a while even after the BOINC client has been shut down correctly.

2) Message boards : Problems and Help : 50% of WUs Don\'t Download (Message 7293)
Posted 5085 days ago by Profile DenaharProject donor
Aha, that's the ticket. The anti-virus system in place was blocking the download. This is my first encounter with being blocked from downloading anything, so it's not *too* hypersensitive...this particular .exe just rubbed it the wrong way, I guess.

Since the system's out of my control, I imagine this can't be circumvented. Guess I'll have to live knowing I can't process sieve WUs.

Well, you can override the blocking mechanic just like the way I did it: download the file in compressed form directly from the www.primegrid.com/download folder. For x64 there is already a zipped file but Rytis could compress also the 32-bit version if we humbly ask for.

Can you access the file directly? http://www.primegrid.com/download/primegrid_gcwsieve_wrapper_1.04_windows_intelx86.exe

I don't really see why it should fail...

Perhaps just because of the same issues I had here: a nasty firewall that blocks all *.exe downloads?

64bit windows version is out.

Thanks! I just got a workunit to test it out. On a side note: do sieve workunit pop up in the results tables? I cannot find them though.

Does disk usage spike at the time of the launch?

Yes, a bit, perhaps close to 0.5 MB/s right at the lunch of the sieving app.

I think, it is/was not a problem of the application though. I just managed to re-install boinc but this time not into the default (programs) directory tree. I just read somewhere else that vista has a problem here (service installation and alike). Currently it looks like if it works much better with this new location.

I tried recently to sieve via boinc on a vista 64-bit platform. Boinc correctly downloaded the 64-bit gcw application (windows version 1.05) but I have some problems.

First off, right at finishing a task boinc manager freezes for about 1 to 3 minutes. Then on many occasions, I get the following message:

13.10.2007 11:40:52|PrimeGrid|Task gcwsieve_260221_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file

I am quite sure the problems is about the application, because LLR runs very smooth on that host. Any chance for a bug fix on that?

This one is new. We'll see what can be done.

One thing about the new application: Rytis, could you please host a zipped file of the two new files? I cannot download them through boinc automatically once again. Thanks in advance!

*snip*
The lack of checkpointing is one of the main reasons that this project is still listed as Beta according to Rytis on other posts.

Alpha status, even.

THE idea:
Finish your WUs, upload and report them. (I've checked that they're correctly reported, although they're still shown in BOINC manager)
Then, before downloading new WUs, you reset the project. I'll try as soon as my queue ist done.

That's perhaps not necessary. I just solved this problem by editing out all the references to those WOO-work units in the client_state.xml. This way boinc stoped showing the error.

Yes, that's almost the same, since resetting afaik means only clearing those entries from client_state.xml.

I agree. There is just the flaw of having to wait for the queue to empty up and the (slight) annyoance of that specific host getting a new ID (which could mess up some stats). Anyhow, the rror does not seems to be critical at the moment.
