1) Message boards : Number crunching : Double Top Secret Mystery Challenge (Message 74376)

BOINC software was designed at a time where most users had a PC with one CPU. Till today it will not do what you want....

Set PrimeGrid to 100% and WCG to 0%.
Disable WCG.
Download 12 WU from PrimeGrid, start the WU's, and set PrimeGrid to "no new work".
Enable WCG.

That is such an common-sense idea that I feel like a complete dummy for not realizing it myself. Thank-you...that will work for me! :)

Need to pick the collective brains here. This is the first Challenge/contest where I've found the need to manage a given PC's allocation of WUs for a project with all cores still available for processing.

My problem: I have an AMD Server with 48 processors. I've already spent the last (11) days allowing it to run PSP LLR on all 48 processors. Can't do another fully loaded stint and finish by the deadline.

My Desire: I'd like to put 12 of 48 processors on PSP LLR and assign some qty of the remaining 36 processors to WCG (FA@H).

I've attempted to use the "Resource Share" setting for the profile assigned to my 4P Server to manage this desire. I set the profile in PrimeGrid to 32% and the same profile over at WCG to 100%. I know about the "use at most CPU %" setting in the Local BOINC Manager and can set that to 25% to limit PrimeGrid to just 12 processors out of 48. But doing it that way leaves the other 36 processors idling for days and is wasting available resources.

When I tried the above Resource Share settings, here is what I did.

- Set the individual Resource Share settings for the 4P's same profile in PrimeGrid (32%) and at WCG (100%).
- Set the Local BOINC Mgr to limit CPU usage to 25% of the processors just to initially limit PrimeGrid to 12 WUs total.
- Enabled new tasks for PrimeGrid and downloaded (12) WUs.
- Enabled new tasks for WCG.
- Result, my active work queue filled up with a bunch more PrimeGrid WUs and appeared to ignore the WCG WUs.

Before this contest began, all this 4P Server ever worked was WCG projects. This was the first time (starting on 3/1) that I have used it for PrimeGrid. Is it possible that some of the "debt management" stuff interceded and gave preference to PrimeGrid anyway?

I successfully pulled off a smaller scale version of this on my 2600K, but with this 4P Server, I'm having no such luck. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated because I'd like to get in a few more PSP LLR WUs before the contest ends on Saturday.

Are (historical) daily Team results (total points progress for this contest) stored anywhere for public view? I know that I can get the current results from the PG main page. But I would like to chart our team's progress from the contest start if possible. I tried Googling and also looked over at BOINC Stats, but couldn't find any historical data for this current contest.

http://boincstats.com/en/stats/pchallenge/team/list/112/credits

Unforunately all the PG challenges for 2014 on BS was set up beforehand, not including the
Pony challenge (#2 on the PrimeGrid challenge list). Therefore "The Double Top Secret Mystery Challenge" stats showing on BoincStats gives the numbers for the Pony challenge - and none for the challenge it should show. If no one fix the links, this mistake will continue all through the year. As just means that the stats on BS will be to no use - and only show the total credit for each challenge - and also under the wrong name. ;-D

Thanks for that input...I didn't notice that had happened on the BS stat info.

Ohhh, I felt like a judge or maybe a politician with that "honorable member" thing. :)

I had actually read that post too, but it quickly went zing-boom right over my head. Heh...greek to me!

That's Ok Michael, just wanted to check.

To the other suggestion of looking at that BOINC Stats link, I had found that place, but the data doesn't look right. That site says that our team (EVGA) has 4,262,996 in points for this Challenge. The PG site here currently says we have 2,445,562 in points. I also can't get prior days (if it was accurate for this contest) from that BOINC Stats page.

I usually take a daily snapshot myself at ~ the same time every day, but wasn't "on the ball" this time and just started doing it today. Thanks for the replies though.

Very helpful Michael and thanks for taking time to explain it. This opens my eyes more about these WUs and why things are changing.

Michael,

Yes, (hand going up) I have been looking at how many tasks I can do (by rig). I've been doing my own calculations (daily) based upon actual %complete and actual elapsed hours.

But, I'm pretty new to these LLR tasks, so I don't quite get why they would increase in size (~23%). What causes that to happen (if it isn't too technical to describe)?

Impressive numbers on those E5 Xeons Michael. Wish I had some! Looks like they are finishing in ~55hrs? Now those are Servers that put some hurt on number crunching. I like that and thanks for sharing it.

Tng, space-wise (4) rigs certainly would exceed the footprint of my 4P Server. From a wattage perspective, my 4P (less monitor) is using 760W while crunching 48 threads of LLR. My 2600K @4Ghz by comparison (less monitor) is consuming 243W. So, you would have to exceed (3) 2600Ks to climb over the Watts that my 4P is consuming while crunching.

I wasn't really caring about wattage, foot-prints or any other costs. Just looking at it from a contest production perspective and solely within the results for these LLR WUs.
