You're correct Michael, I have no Idea what these commands do.
I have an i7 8700k - 6 cores and multithreading turned ON
Before this challenge I could run 12 simultaneous WU's, now I can run 2 of the 5 downloaded
I thought deleting the app_config would fix it, obviously not

Deleting app_config.xml does not restore default thread config. This is a known bug in BOINC, I reported it some time ago. You have to first configure app to use 1 thread only and reload config/restart BOINC. After doing so you can safely delete app_config.xml.

You wrote name of this mathematician a bit incorrectly - special Polish characters are changed to their closest Latin equivalents. His name should be written as "Wacลaw Franciszek Sierpiลski" (I bolded two changed letters).

vsyscall=none causing core dumps?

This is result of change in new versions of linux kernel. For more details see https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues/2120.
Edit: there is workaround for this, you need to pass vsyscall=emulate parameter to kernel during startup. More details are here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1770266#p1770266.

Yeah! I have found two primes in a row! 1st one came at 19:04:34, and 2nd at 23:25:19 - that is 4 hours 20 minutes after 1st one! And what is interesting, both were found by the same machine :)
