1) Message boards : Number crunching : The Showers to Flowers Challenge (Message 15325)
Posted 4230 days ago by Profile WilliamWallace
Thanks to all for a great challenge. Especially to William Wallace, I thought you had me there until the corrected points were posted. I knew I dumped over 450 WUs between 10:45 and 11:00, but never saw them. So I am very happy to see the corrected finish.

And to any crunchers that think you need a server farm or be a sys admin, all my machines are in my dining room of a one bedroom apartment. And I took third of the participants. It is definitely a sacrifice, but one person, at home, can make a big difference.

You have a dining room, I have computer rooms where I eat:)

Nice work on the 3rd place.

Outlnder is correct people, you don't have to be an admin or be hooked up with an institution. My farm is also home owned and operated, although due to unemployment I am reducing my farm considerably.

I'll be easier for you next time Outlnder:)

Does resetting do the same thing??

I believe resetting leaves WU's to expire...

Thank you for this challenge... Did we find a prime?

Not yet. We won't know for sure until all WU's of the Challenge have been validated.

Sorry everyone, I didn't know. I won't let that happen in the future.

Great Challenge! Tough work:)

THANKS for putting it on and I look forward to the next one.

...I really wish people wouldn't abort all their WU's that are no longer challenge-worthy like this guy just did: 71947
:(

While we prefer that all downloaded WU's be completed, we understand users wanting to move on to other endeavors. Therefore, we kindly ask users moving on to actually ABORT their WU's instead of DETACHING or PAUSING. With the new BOINC clients, you can select all and delete. Then update project. Very easy. :)

ABORTING allows the WU to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING and PAUSING causes WU's to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

Does resetting do the same thing??

I do not finish residual work because of electricity constraints.

Only a few hours left for this Challenge right? I live in central time so I'm not sure with the world clock when it ends exactly, anyone around my area know how much time we have left? thanks

Edit : I was able to put in my state in the world converter but I'm not sure of the servers time zone area so thats why I'm curious how much longer we have for this Challenge.

Should be noon in central, I am EST and 1pm is my end.

Will there be a Linux app?

We plan to have one by the time of the challenge.

I appreciate that, Thanks

Doesn´t look like "bad karma" to me, for several hours now some credit sums are actually DROPPING in the graphs, which didn´t happen the three days before.

It is because quorum is being met and validation proves a WU is faulty. Challenge score is given as soon as a WU is returned, but it is removed if it is deemed invalid.

Ok, I can accept that WUs are being determined faulty and challenge points are withdrawn when the quorum mechanics do their thing, but that doesn´t really explain why this starts to happen this late in the game. IMHO that effect should have been visible much earlier.

BTW, how does such a "faulty" WU look in the tasks list?
I checked my tasks but only found "errored out" ones, pendings and those granted credit, but none that were reported like "Success, claimed xxx, granted 0".
Please explain when convenient. Tanks ;-)

@John, Thanks for the insight. I don't normally use prime 95 as I have found in the past OCCT to be more accurate[my experience only, YMMV]. Memtest has been run on some boxes for as long as a day but of course only verifies ram.

In the particular case of the four boxes that I have mentioned, it probably is some combination of events that lead to the issues. I don't believe heat to be germain as it is about 0c in the room with the problem children.

I have plenty of other boxes that appear to be doing well and that is enough:)

I know it is more work ;)

But I think that many would enjoy the "thrill of competition" more by having sub-group leader boards (e.g., leaders among those with 1 host, 5 or less hosts, and more than 5 hosts, etc.) in addition to the overall board.

I really enjoy these challenges and I'm in on this one because it's PrimeGrid. I don't care that the cobblestones are ridiculously low, or that the progress doesn't show in Linux. It upsets me when people complain, because I know the admins are doing their best to resolve these deficiencies and the fixes simply didn't make it in before the challenge.

Things like the 10 hosts or less ranking takes time away from fixing problems and implementing new applications. Also, it encourages overclocking to maximize those 10 systems, which on these work units can waste half a day or more (per core) or even destroy a system.

Moral of the story: Attach your farm, run solid systems, filter the leaderboard yourself (there's a nice graph utility so you compare with your 5 closest friends / rivals on BOINCstats), and just have fun.

Remember the rules when you post say:
# No messages intended to annoy or antagonize other people, or to hijack a thread.
# No messages that are deliberately hostile or insulting.

We all look at things differently, don't we:)

I can find no issues with one of my boxes and have moved it to another project.

I was still putting out many "pending" wu's that had a third unit sent out.

I did , yesterday and day before, shut down two others that refused to run the 321. One would vacillate between cores in a random pattern, the other locked solid and would not work the units. Stock boxes that run all other projects without issue.

Must be bad "crunchers" karma:)
