1) Message boards : Problems and Help : Can't deselect project (Message 115996)

On the project preferences page, the "Generalized Cullen/Woodall Sieve (GCW-Sieve)" project is automatically selected no matter what I do. When I uncheck it and save the preferences, nothing happens and the box is still checked. Is this happening to anyone else? I'm not sure what this problem even is.

You have "Use CPU" selected all the way at the top of the page. You're trying to deselect all CPU projects, while simultaneously leaving "Use CPU" turned on.

Turn off "Use CPU" and you'll be able to deselect GCW-Sieve.

Oh, heh, I get it. Never would have figured it out. Thanks man.

OK I've figured out that I can get it (the Cullen/Woodall Sieve) to not check itself if another CPU project is selected. Wouldn't be a problem except I just want to run GPU projects right now.

Thanks so much to all y'all for the info! I'll stick to n=16 and 17 for the time being, then. I mean, the 5K list probably shouldn't be as important as it is for me but I love arbitrary cutoffs and unorthodox claims to fame, so...

So, some of the intro posts above look like they might be a bit outdated, and anyway I had a question or two. I'm not new to PrimeGrid but having just bought a graphics card I'm new to the GF project(s). Call me vain but at this point I'd like to find a prime as quickly as possible, and then reassess what subprojects I work on. My GPU is crunching through n≤17 or 18 at the moment, I think.. I had up to n=20 selected but the units were taking longer to work through (obviously).

Basically what I'd like to know is, is my intuition correct in thinking that lower n means higher odds of finding a prime because the GPU can work them faster or because of something particular to the project or the math? In time I want to read up on all of this but for just starting out it'd help to have an idea of what my chances are. If I just do n=15 or n=16, and I have a pretty good card, are we talking (and I know there is a lot of variability here) weeks, months, or years?

Thanks bunches!
