Main Tasks and Proof Tasks

I am sure this has been discussed somewhere but I am unable to find the information.
I have a number of tasks on my account task page that show as "Main Task" which show much longer run times and more credit than the work unit I have just returned, so someone else is ding the proper work unit and I am doing what? exactly.
I have just returned a PSP task that appears to have been a "Main" task (over a day to run) and it is showing now as a "Proof Task", what is that?
Thanks for your time

I believe this thread might help.
Read this post (particularly, the LLR2 part and the the following one in which Michael Goetz corrected a mistake I made).

Yes, the PSP task you returned was a main task (i.e. your computer was testing some large number for primality). The "[Proof task]" text that you see in its status field is a link to the corresponding proof task (i.e. a short task that someone will run to quickly confirm your computer's calculations); that proof task hasn't been sent out yet. Similarly, your computer completed a PPS proof task a few days ago, and you can see a link to the corresponding main task. | |

Thank you for the explanations, makes it much clearer.
So I have been doing proof tasks to prove other Mains, and now I have a Main so others will do a proof, good to know.

Unless you get a host like this one that seems content to download lots of work then let it all time out. Slows the proofing considerably. Then again, maybe this host just died. We'll go with that and wait for them to be reissued.
