Even more pi in the sky: Calculating 100 trillion digits of pi on Google Cloud


The Register has estimated the cost of this effort: n2-highmem-128 instances cost $7.706976 an hour at list price, so the cost of the compute server was about $29,000. The n2-highCPU-16 instances cost $0.57 an hour, or about $70,000 for the whole job. Data movement would have added plenty to the task.

Checking the math on the Register:

157 days, 23 hours, 31 minutes and 7.651 seconds = 3,791.51879 hours

$7.706976 x 3,791.51879 = 29221.1443181 or about 29,000

$0.57 x 3,791.51879 = 2161.1657103 or about 2,000

...

Adding the two priced numbers together gets 8.276976, which calculated separately times 3,791.51879 = 31,382.3100284. Adds up to ~60,000 if you include both numbers as two costs.

Where do they get the 70,000 figure? What am I missing? Data movement costs? Google hasn't disclosed the cost of the computation, which took the above length of time.

While the VM may cost 70k, disk and networking tend to be much more expensive.
