Hi all,
a question to the specialists:
While participating in the challenge I was playing a little with a dual boot on a older Athlon 64 X2 (2,2GHz).
Booting Win XP Prof (32bit) one WU runs for about 39min in average.
Booting Ubuntu 08.04 (64bit) one WU runs 44min in average.

Just wonder about because the challenge thread notes that 64-bit gains about factor 1.5 over 32-bit (independent of OS).

Done anything wrong?

Regards
Joe

Edit:
WU returns with this text, so I guess the 64bit client IS running:

<core_client_version>5.10.45</core_client_version>
BOINC Prime Sierpinski Problem sr2sieve 1.05 wrapper
Using Geoffrey Reynolds' sr2sieve 1.6.20 (64bit)
wrapper: running primegrid_psp_sr2sieve_1.05_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

There are 3 different lengths on PSP wu !!

1: The old one gives gives 7.40 credits.
2: increased lengths first time 12,28 credits
3: Second increased wu 15,35 credits.

Check this first.

Looks like the powernow daemon is throttling your CPU frequency. You should try to uninstall it.

Open a terminal window and type

sudo apt-get remove powernowd
.

Hi Lennart,
all the WUs I compared were of the latest batch - so returning with 15,35 credits.
So thats not the thing......

Also the powernowd daemon was never installed and could therefore not uninstall ;-)
Sysinfo reports 2CPU @ 2200.0MHz - which is correct for a X2 4200+, I guess.

I'm FAR away from being a Linux/Ubuntu crack, so I think the idea of something to throttle the CPU is worth to be validated - but what else could it be?

It Is not :-/ Anyway, thanks for the hint.

However, behaviour is somewhat strange.
Checking with atop I see both processors running the primegrid_psp_sieve job at averaged 99% each.
Little of CPU distributes for firefox, Xorg and boinc_client etc.
So I guess there is nothing 'hijacking' CPU power.

Is there a way to make absolutely sure that the CPU is not throtteled down by any daemon or for whatever reason...?

try doing
sudo head /proc/cpuinfo

See what it reports the CPU MHz as. This will AT LEAST be the full CPU frequency.

Now stop the BOINC daemon with
sudo /etc/init.d/boinc stop
.
Then do the 'head' again and see if it's dropped.
Like all things Linux there's probably 7 more ways and mine may or may not be effective as I don't have any APIC power controls enabled on my Xubuntu crunchers.

Message 9831 - Posted: 28 Jul 2008 | 18:35:00 UTC - in response to Message 9805.

Finally it turned out it really WAS throtteling the core.
But I could not find the reason inside Ubuntu.

Crunching speed is now exactly what I could expect (double speed, actually!).

I got the thing fixed by deactivating the throtteling feature in the PC's BIOS - and I admit, I should have done this simple thing much earlier.
However, I thought activating this feature in BIOS just allows some software to do throtteling, but it requires an active daemon to do. Well, I found none.....

Even more strange: Knowing this issue I checked a Asus P5Q-PRO board running a Q9450 with Vista 64 - and I found the throtteling is OFF in the BIOS but with no load this machine throttels down anyway to 75% of full speed. But that caused no problem, as any load powers the cores to 100% immediately. Going to install Ubuntu x64 to that machine as soon as I find some time.

Thanks for all help.

Joe

Windows and Linux manage power differently. BOINC applications run at a low priority and while Windows considers such applications worthy the energy, Linux considers that low-priority processes are not time-critical, thus it doesn't crank the CPU frequency up for them. Therefore, while Windows runs BOINC applications at full CPU speed, Linux doesn't.

However, Linux can be told to not ignore low-priority processes by setting the option POWERSAVED_CONSIDER_NICE to "yes" in /etc/powersave.conf (or in a similar file, depending on the distro). This is a better approach than disabling power management forthright.

For modern ubuntu (7.10 or newer)

Open gconf-editor
go to /apps/gnome-power-manager/cpufreq
check box consider_nice

In earlier ubuntu:

Open gconf-editor
go to /apps/gnome-power-manager
check box cpufreq_consider_nice

Without this, only running processes with normal priority (nice 0) and above are considered when deciding when to increase the CPU frequency. With this, processes at any priority are included in the decision. (I'd much rather this was a value rather than a tickbox, so I could choose the cutoff myself).

I have heard this doesn't work on all platforms, but it does on all the ones I've tried personally, where the speedstep stuff worked whatsoever.

Be aware that this will make your machine run hotter, and may accelerate wearing out the bearings on your cpu fan :-)
