https://youtu.be/0GKqV-xsHwk

This is what I am excited about.
I saw Giorgio Live about 3 years ago in Melbourne
Right in front of me.

Doesn't get old even after 40+ years.
Original ones:
Donna Summer I Feel Love Original 8 minute 12" version 1977

That is an awesome track.
I think this thread is edging towards Giorgio.
74 is the new 24 (I hope Giorgio mixed this version - and no distractions from the graphics like in the standard release)
https://youtu.be/HEBk2K91MU4

This is the track from Daft Punk that got me into Giorgio.
I heard this in JB HiFi in Canberra while there for work.
I had to know who this is.
I bought the album.
https://youtu.be/zhl-Cs1-sG4
And I already knew much of his music.
It is nice (and sometimes not nice) to have a moment like that - where you remember where you were when it happened.

He gets something so right with the beat which isn't there later on (as in the last few years).
It is about the beat.

What started this thread off.
The orchestra - I think original intention?
This does 'quiet contemplation better' and 'space' better.
The other one does fun.
Hard to know.
https://youtu.be/Nzo3atXtm54
I think orch is better, as much fun as the other is.
There is also a flow up of intensity (and down) in a phrase which isn't found in the piano.
You would hope so!
Orch is more romantic.
Piano duet endlessly fun.
Orch is a candle light dinner.
Piano, I wouldn't necessarily say a one-nighter, it has more than that.

As much as the orch is better musically in nearly every way - it is the piano duet for me.

I think why the piano is that I hope I was discerning the different techniques played by the 2 players. Right player looks more showy but it is a team effort. Some nice phrasing by left player. Nice sounds. It takes practice to be able to play like that for either players. It isn't as immediately obvious how an orch works. Charisma, fun, show wins.

Ah. Except for the acoustics. And the live experience.
I think I really would prefer the orch.
The sound would be better with the orch.
The music is sound not Ah! I don't know!

This is difficult to choose.

Edit: Someone may say - you don't have to choose - enjoy both!

Edit final: Orch wins! It is the phrasing, every section of every section. That cannot be bettered. The music seems to be best with the capabilities of an orchestra - and the original piece makes space for each phrase, and makes use of what the different instruments can do to create that contrast.

I don't know: The syncopation in the piano is wonderful. And I love watching and listening to this. And there may be even a slight blues on the back of the beat vibe to it. Sorry can't remember the term.

This music is so much fun - it is the joy of the musicians which you feel a couple of beats before they show it.
Surely Brahms didn't have syncopation?

The highlight is obviously at 2:43, where the video editor slowed down the video to extend that joyous facial expression, and then used a jump cut to sync with the audio. If this was broadcast TV, the viewer wouldn't even realize they've been played. The video's title slide is a snapshot of that moment.

Hey I am playing an excellent playlist of actual music files that I found on my hard-drive.
How the hell can I work out where it is?
I hate windows.

Edit: It shouldn't have been that difficult.
Just so you know what I was dealing with:

It is an excellent playlist. And I have a shortcut to my desktop now. Panic over.
I'm listening to the song which found the playlist "Paradise" by Coldplay.

In memory of our cat Ralph - Songs of the cat
Mary - Scissor sisters
Paradise - Cold play
Giorgio by Moroder - Daft punk
Spirits (having flown) - Bee Gees
Thank you for the music - Abba
Run to me - Bee Gees
You should be dancing - Bee Gees
Chase - Giorgio

You should be dancing - Bee Gees
I wanna rock you - Giorgio
Sooner or later - Giorgio
What a night - Giorgio
Friend of mine - Steve Martin and Eddie
From here to eternity - Giorgio

Edit: That's hilarious. I have You should be dancing twice!
Apparently I need to be dancing.
I can't argue with this music
I know I put much thought into the progression of songs - it was to tell a story and I may have been inspired by a nice girl I liked at the time

Yes I think you are correct.

It was more that I was bemused by this playlist - it does seem to have a theme to it.
I found it because I was searching for images I took of theatre shows.
I started it playing, continued searching for images and then somehow couldn't work out where it was playing from.

I have since found an easy way now - it did involve a right click - but of a song in the playlist - which should have been obvious. Yesterday was one of those days where I was missing the obvious - such as I didn't see when I changed Mega to 2 threads to run some tasks, that it both listed 1 thread tasks and 2 thread tasks. This is obvious it would be done this way, but I didn't see it. It doesn't help all my computer names have 4 letters ending in ake.

I'm going to have to admonish myself for going off topic.

Back to vaguely near the topic of the thread - I put the songs on a memory stick and tried them in the front room. Sounded like rubbish. Lacking dimension in every way. These are WAV files that I ripped from CD so the limitation is on the CD rom I used to rip them.

The best part of my system focuses entirely on PCM. It is the ongoing debate around PCM vs DSD. It always comes back to the quality of the recording/mastering. DSD has a disadvantage in that the clock has to be way more accurate. PCM (red book) has a disadvantage in that it is considered 20 KHz necessary to be played back and anything above 22.05 kHz may cause distortions below that frequency. 16 Bit is easier - 96 dB dynamic range (16 x 6) is more than enough. It would have been much more sensible for recordings to be all in multiples of 48 kHz (so they align with movies). Are CDs good enough? Definitely. But it always comes back to the recording and mastering. Any differences that may be heard at say 88.2 KHz (or higher) and 20 bit (or higher) are because of the recording and mastering, not the format.

I can't remember about DSD and where above a certain frequency it causes distortion far worse than PCM. I think that may be around 25 kHz for single DSD. I have heard people say that it is a pity that 5 bit DSD isn't the standard. I imagine 2 x DSD has advantages for management of distortions in playback similar to 88.2 kHz PCM - both allowing for a nicer low pass filter.

Which brings me to my R2R DAC. It has no oversampling and no filters. Which I don't get. Surely it needs a low pass filter? I'd talk to the designer and builder of the DAC again, but I think I still wouldn't understand. It is enough that 40 kHz is all you need to completely describe any frequencies up to 20 kHz. And 96 dB dynamic range is enough to cause permanent hearing damage if you consider 30 dB as the noise floor.

Wouldn't a filter be an over-constraint while the amplification itself could potentially have as a way of evolution an enlargement of its working range?
I don't think I'm wrong in considering my question as purely rhetorical.
It's a nice unit. Does it exist in 19" rack element? I have the feeling it could be usefull in more ways than one...
I have (open) ideas about a neighboring design (live side) considering an aligned (dual) xlr and dual optical dac (like your design) backwards (analog) compatibility and triple leveling of interposition / interchangeability (3 rotary fader, one by input). The evolved way to consider the concept would draw the beginnings of a purely "active" digital mixing controlled by the fader

I think I'm getting some of your suggestion, but I'm not confident I fully get it. Do people use R2R topology to encode PCM? Most mixing is done with PCM as far as I know. So even if something is originally recorded in DSD, it gets converted to PCM and then back again if the final product is DSD. Though I think Paul McGowan's audio company uses only DSD throughout the digital flow.
I don't know about the rack mount - new products are about to be released in a couple of months.
It was 2 or 3 years ago I looked into DACs and I liked what I saw from Mojo Audio. It seemed elegant to me - the design philosophy. And I like CDs (and Blu-rays) so I probably will go for a product from someone saying CDs are all you need. I am also having a small exploration into vinyl.
The DAC does sound good - the bass is what is the term? Ah yes, fully sick. I think that is the technical term for it.

Toslink is audiophonically lossless admited. So if the recording is done cd normal, the physical rendering is to consider cd normal too. That's what matters added to the fact that there can be no parasitic mass or electric arc generated by the protocol itself and other problems with soldering, phase inversion or things of that order. Which also means that you can put all sorts of analog things upstream of the digital source without dangerous potential contact with the preamp and the body of the amp section.
As long as the gateway is cared for as logic suggests without parasit latency or degradation compared, however floating it may be, to the eternal Origin reference of the cd before
to come down to the amp, then the"preamp" optical PCM gateway mission is fulfilled.
Here comes the interposition / interchangeability factors I was talking about.

That made my day.

But as a side note - coconut will not make you fat. It is disingenuous of people giving nutritional guidelines to say coconut makes you fat. I could go into the metabolism of the fatty acids in coconut. It is a medium chain fatty acid which in good part is metabolised similar to carbohydrates - it passes through the intestinal wall into the portal blood to the liver. It mostly gets metabolised like carbs but doesn't create the same rise in insulin levels. I could go into the antimicrobial details including how it decreases pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-a, IL-1b and IL-6. I can't find the study - it was how cows were fed coconut oil in the hope to fatten them up. It made them hungry - it increased their metabolism. The mono-glyceride - Monolaurin - is a powerful antimicrobial fat. (The fats in coconut are half lauric acid - monolaurin is lauric acid attached to a glycerol. A triglyceride has 3 fatty acids attached to a glycerol) Eating too much of anything is not a good idea. Eating a range of foods that includes coconut is a very good idea.

And why not? - this is a rant - eat macadamias - they have a high amount of another very interesting anti-microbial fat - palmitoleic acid.
The body can make this from the de novo lipogenesis fatty acid palmitic acid, but as far as I know it tends to elongate first and then desaturase (omega 9 pathway) rather than desaturase to palmitoleic (omega 7 pathway).

I feel better now.

Ah yes 17 carbons long. The fatty acid that margarine was named after.
I've gone down a rabbit hole. Coal butter - oh wow. Margarine made from coal which was made in the 30s and 40s.
This is a neat summary of a good chunk of synthesis of fatty acids:

It is a very simplified version. Humans don't have a desaturase higher than D9D (delta 9 desaturase). Everything in this drawing happens in the human body except the D12D and D15D parts. It shows only 1 way to synthesis DHA which is the endpoint of what is shown for omega 3. I have seen a drawing which has D8D which I remember along with D5D being associated with the human gene FADS1.

The end point of the omega 9 pathway is Mead's acid. If you have that, it shows a chronic nutritional deficiency in omega 3 and omega 6. Probably because the body is keen to use D6D and D5D and when those can't be used on omega 3 and omega 6 it says what the hell let's process oleic acid instead.

I have contaminated another thread with fatty acids. Someone will have to send in the bio-decontamination team to hose it down and make it ready for music again.

Edit: What is labelled as fatty acid synthase is also de novo lipogenesis or maybe that includes acetyl-CoA too?. I find that term quaint. De novo, genesis - it seems to be said twice.

I enjoyed this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bP-fFxAMOI
Ride of the Valkyries on the organ - yep that works.
4 manuals - the 2nd from the bottom will be the great. The top will be solo. Could be different names for the others. Choir on the bottom and swell 2nd from the top. The swell and choir both in their own boxes that you can adjust the opening. He had nice shoes for playing the organ.
I'm trying to remember where the stops were located for the organ I played.
I think it was the pedal on the left and closer to the congregation. Swell in from that. It must be the great on the right closer to the congregation and choir in from that. It was a 3 manual organ. Just found images of the stops - got the great and choir round the wrong way.

The thread has been saved by Sensiseb!

I started listening to Vaughan Williams at school.
It may have been a performance of Variations on a Theme by Tallis which the school orchestra played.
Having played many hymns on the organ - Vaughan Williams' hymns were up there with the best. Hymn 310 from the Australian hymn book comes to mind. Had to look up my hymn book - "Down Ampney" In this hymn book are pencilled in notations for the pedals. A "V" above the bass stave means toe for right foot. A circle above the bass stave means heel of right foot. An upside down V below the bass stave means toe of left foot, etc.
Then there are pencilled in notations for stop setting for each hymn. Each of the 3 manuals and pedals had 6 presets each. If you flipped up the music stand - you could adjust every one of these with tiny switches. And then general 1, 2 and 3. General 3 is massive - pretty much 'pulling out all the stops'. So much fun.
For this hymn - 4 verses.
The swell would have been coupled to the great. And the great may have been coupled to the pedals.
1. Great 4, Swell 4.
2. Great 5 (and swell 4)
3. General 2
4. Great 6 (which will leave general 2 settings for the swell and pedals). This would have been quite loud.
No mention of pedal settings - general 2 would have covered it for verses 3 and 4.
The Choir had some interesting lower volume stops - many strings.
Organs have 4 different types of stops. Principals, flutes, reeds and strings.
An 8 foot stop is what places the keys on the manual 'the same as a piano'. Or at least it places middle C two octaves above the lowest note on a manual.
An 8 foot stop could be a closed end 4 foot stop which will be called an 8 foot stop. 8 foot refers to the lowest note.
If you are a bass head - 32 foot stops are what you want (17.4 Hz for the lowest note. Another source says it is 16 Hz)
Some crazy organs have 64 foot stops.

I'm getting to why all this - Vaughan Williams Symphony 7 - Sinfonia Antartica. Next posting

Sinfonia Antartica.
I'll make a 2nd link to the build up to the organ in the 2nd movement.
The organ represents a huge glacier or ice barrier.
The music started off as music for a film - Scott of the Antarctic.
From Symphony number 7 to 9, Vaughan Williams used some very interesting instruments.
A wind machine is scored for Symphony 7 - Sinfonia Antartica.
Saxophones in 8 and/or 9.

You don't need to go far in the first movement - just over 2 minutes.
https://youtu.be/Ral2D3xs24w

Short cut to build up to organ:
https://youtu.be/Ral2D3xs24w?t=1098
This will take about 8 minutes - I think it is worth it.
I am loving how I can follow the score - awesome!

I love Vaughan Williams.
Symphony 6 - a response to WW2.
First movement - It places an idea - builds it up by creating what I may call a dance - creates a wonderful harmonious response which goes straight back into the initial proposition to end the movement.

7 minutes listening
Edit: After listening (and watching) I like this conductor.

Before I get to Symphony 5.
Greensleeves.
Vaughan Williams brought old tunes back to life.
This one is about 4 minutes:

I do not need to commend Sir Neville Mariner - always will be good with Vaughan Williams.

Symphony 5 - 3rd movement.
It is worth listening to the whole symphony - it is probably his best. I will need to listen to 2, 3 and 4 again to make that opinionated statement.

This is what I most like about Vaughan Williams:

Edit: This conductor is good! I haven't heard that emphasis at 19 minutes 51 sec before. Or maybe it is only because I am watching the conductor? It is good.

I talked to someone - a conductor - who studied at a place Sir Adrian Boult taught in the late 60s / early 70s.
This person was glad he wasn't taught by Boult because he used the conducting thingy weirdly. Baton?
The person I talked to - extremely proficient - very glad he didn't learn that way of conducting.
I heard this person take Gianni Schicci to a whole new level. It was amazing. The orchestra didn't have a conductor for a performance - David came in and so changed it. Yes!

I just listened to an album at 50%.
MA12000 with 805D3.
OMG does that perform well.
When I tried 65% a few weeks ago I got power guard kicking in on the amplifier.
OK - this integrated may be loosely evaluated at 350 Watts.
But by hell, at 50% it will remove your socks and unmentionables.
There is gravitas in the bass - it is strong!

I am also impressed at the 805D3 rated at 120 Watts - no - it can handle way more than that.
(I am listening through 6.5 inch woofers)

People may ask what the hell are you doing?
Feeling it baby. Feeling it.

More experimentation.

This is a brutally powerful amplifier.
Good as separates?
Up to a point.
The point being where the police are called and you are bleeding out your ears.

At 50% - wow that is a lot of current delivered to the speakers.
And these are small speakers (haha b&w small speakers - don't be fooled!)

Mooohaawahaha!

OK I am going to take some medication - I doubt it will properly help.
It is OK, I am a professional maniac.
