Windows 11 discussion

With the release of Windows 11, I figured a discussion thread might be good to talk about any problems, issues, gotchas, successes of upgrading. I only have one eligible machine and it would be nice to hear how other people's experiences have been with the update before I allow my machine to be updated.

My opinion is to play it safe and not upgrade any system you use heavily.
I have updated one test system, and basically it will take some time to get used to changes to the UI. It will take me time to get used to it and return to normal productivity. Then there is a question if any of the changes may improve productivity beyond that.
I have three other systems that are able to be updated, but I wont allow it just yet. Given Win10 still has years of support, there is no rush.

My laptop auto updated because I am a Beta Tester, not the "quick ring" though, and it happened overnight while I slept...I went to bed with Win10 Home crunching tasks and woke up to Win 11 Home crunching tasks as though nothing had happened. Of course the task bar not being to the far left was a huge key that things were different. But there is a setting to move it back to the left and after doing that it's not that uch different than Win 10. Yes when you want to copy and paste or 'send to' a file you have to click to open 'more options' but then the old Win10 list shows up. Yes I moved a couple things around on the taskbar and now it reserves the original space for one of things I added, the Snipping Tool, and now when I open something not already on my task bar I have to slide it over or it ;eaves a funky gap where I pinned the Snipping Tool before moving it to someplace less used but still on the Taskbar. It's also a bit funky when your mouse glides along the empty space in the Taskbar and you see things like the speaker settings adjustment and the wifi setting all being the exact same background color and not normally being seen at all but being seen as you pass your mouse along the Taskbar. Yes the usual wfi icon is still there to the far right next to the speaker icon and yes the Settings are still inside it.
All in all it's not bad, yes some settings that were easy to get to are now buried a couple layers down but everything seems to still be there. I don't use 'Tiles' on my screen as I prefer the Win7 look of the screen and none are there now post update either. Every program is still there, all my files and folders are still there and all my Programs work like they used to pre update.
It has auto updated once since then and even updated my Nvidia drivers as well, I do use the gpu for crunching at night and it just keeps on crunching. Yesterday I updated my drivers again because Nvidia said their older driver, I was at 469.??, had a problem and there were no problems going to the latest 496.49 version drivers.

Prime95 benchmark throughputs are about the same on Windows 11 + update KB5006746 + AMD Chipset Driver 3.10.08.506, which solved the L3 latency issue on Ryzen processors. Earlier in this post I wrote they were 5% lower, but I forgot to turn off some background tasks before benchmarking. Now it performs as good as before and I am happy.

Mine too is back up to full speed again post install of those updates.

Talk to me in 4 years.
The issue with Microsoft is they will only leave upgrading it free for a period of time, then they will force people to pay for it, like with W10.

I'm not sure MS ever ended the free upgrade from Win7 or newer to Win10. Officially it was only publicised for a period of time, but if you update an existing activated Win7 system you get an activated Win10 system. Just you might have to jump through more hoops to do so than through Windows Update.
I've certainly done clean installs of Win10 within the last year using Win7 keys.

If you use the Win7 stuff for 'handicapped' people, ie the magnifying glass, the reading of the words on the screen etc, you can also still get a free update to Win10.

On the computer that I just upgraded the CPU, and also the bios, I got a windows update message something like this:
"Awesome, your computer can be upgraded to win11!"
Windows understanding of awesome, is a bit different to mine.
I would say "We have some bad news"
I did a quick search of what to turn off in the bios and turned it off.
It took a couple of days for the 'bad news' to filter through to windows telling me that my computer cannot be upgraded.
I think it joyous to be told "This PC doesn't currently meet the minimum system requirements to run Windows 11".

Don't worry MS will probably just lower the bar so your pc is 'ready for Windows 11' again. Remember it's all about the info and each new version gathers a bit more than the last version.

I think it is instinctive for me to reject it.
I know at least once, working as a lighting designer, someone I didn't know suggested a lighting scenario. "Well that will not happen" I say to myself - which is completely independent of the worth of the idea. I made MY idea work in defiance. I remember this happened once or at most twice. I just don't like people telling me what to do - unless we have a formality.
I am confident in this - I wasn't the most difficult person to work with - not by a long way.
