Hello everyone,

Because I read the thread of an eventuell base 2 "G"CW Sieve, (https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=9714#150883), I want to cite Michael Goetz:

To be clear, there's no need for additional *G*CW sieving at this point (or anywhere in the near future.) The interest is only for base 2 sieving.

And I thought something like "What if all computers attached to PrimeGrid would crunch Cullen-Woodall? Would GCW need a sieve soon then?"

So I propose something like this:
In contrast to a competitive challenge, where each individual and team tries to make the most points, we could make kinda "challenge" where we try to crunch (for example) one million GFN-18 WU's or most possible GCW-Workunits in 5 days. Just with the same idea as a challenge: "To focus on a single subproject".

What do you think about this?

Regards,
MiauiKatze

I don't view it as significantly different from putting a challenge on the subproject for the same period of time. What you are proposing is just a binary view on top of the challenges that already exist.

We already had "focus project" implemented.

It can incentive subprojct in to ways>
To point to existing users in preferences what subproject is now desired from project's perspective; they are still free to choose whatever they want.
To set a new computers to focus project if not selected otherwise.
Note that not all subprojects are suitable for all computers (ie. SoB vs notebook/tablets).

I like the idea to push certain subprojects (see what it did for GFN17-low, another push like that and it'd almost be in GFN17-mega range within two weeks instead of 2 years).

But as Michael Millerick pointed out, where's the difference to a challenge? If I got you right, the only difference will be that people don't compete for points, but to finish WUs. So it's only a spiritual difference, means and outcome will be identical. And I think if it's not a competition, people might be less willing to spend a lot of money on it.

I don't mean that they're competing, but crunching together. Not a team vs team or indivudual vs individual challenge, just trying to get the goal together.

Maybe I misunderstand, but isn't that just "Primegrid" ?
Here's 15 projects. There are a number of individuals and teams working on each. Choose the one that appeals to you and jump in and help reach the goal.

If the idea is to choose one single project for everyone to concentrate on, then yes, I really like that idea, if I get to choose the project.

The problem I see is the wide range of hardware here and at every Boinc Project, people come with really slow machines and others with the latest and greatest machine, any Event will become a challenge and those with slower machines will just drop out or never start if their are badges awarded for most this or that kind of task. And just asking everyone to 'please crunch for my project' is what every Boinc Project out there does now and has always done and people still gravitate to what they like and works well on their machines.

I, personally, like the idea of a "focus project" in the way we had it here - to point to users what subproject could/should be emphasized at a certain moment, without forcing them to set it in any way. :) Of course it can always be developed into some kind of a "challenge".
By the way, why did we drop it out? I haven't even noticed ... until I read about it here! I thought we still have SoB for a "focus project". I tried to find some info about that in the forum, but I couldn't!

How about a year long leader board for the focus project?

I like the idea of having a leader board for the focus project, although I don't currently see any project marked as a focus project.

One way to motivate people work on a focus project is to assign extra credit to the focus project, say 10%. Given a set of otherwise equal choices, I'll work on the project that has an incremental benefit for working on the indicated project NOW.

I am still unclear how this would be different from normal challenges. This seems to be just another way to add more challenges to the schedule. If the desire is to have GCW sieve come back on line then we could declare 2022 GCW year and have every challenge a GCW challenge.

In any case, trying to add more resources to one project would reduce the amount of resources to other projects.
