Hello, I just wondered. I'll now complete my 5000 th task in GFN without any finds. How rare they are. Is this normal?

Yes and no...prime numbers get harder and harder to find the further down the rabbit hole we go in looking for them but if you were to choose a project that is fairly new it could be easier to find them as we aren't very far down the rabbit hole yet. Also if you look here:

http://www.primegrid.com/ap.php?userid=860868

you can see that you have found some numbers and been the validation person for a whole lot more numbers.

Finding a Prime Number big enough to be in the top 5k database or bigger is really about crunching the right task at the right time and people with alot of resources tend to have that happen alot more than those of us with fewer resources.

Depends on which GFN you are referring to. Either way, I'd be surprised if you even get a GFN15 within 5000 tasks.

Depends on which GFN you are referring to. Either way, I'd be surprised if you even get a GFN15 within 5000 tasks.

It looks like AOEynes is mostly running GFN16. Currently we expect one GFN16 candidate to be prime out of every 15000-20000 (I forget the exact number). And, roughly speaking, this number tends to double every time you increase by one GFN level--in addition to the tasks taking about four times longer to run.

So I agree with the others, it's not surprising that you haven't found a prime yet, but you are likely not all that far away from your first. You could probably find one faster by switching to GFN15, but you may not want to do that because GFN15 is too small for the top 5000 primes list (T5K).

By the way, if you want to be the discoverer (rather than just the double-checker) of a GFN prime, the thing to focus on is how many "firsts" you're getting; i.e. how often you finish a task before the other person who runs it. This can be seen in the "last 24 hours" table on your account page. If your first percentage is low, you may be able to improve it by changing your computing preferences. For example, on short tasks like GFN16, it's very important to set your cache (i.e. your account -> computing preferences -> "Maintain enough work for an additional --- days") to 0. I also notice you seem to be running both CPU and GPU tasks on the same computer; I'm not at all knowledgeable about this, but you might have better results by adjusting the CPU usage. In any case, there should be plenty of people on the forum who can help.
