The Leader Boards menu contains a spreadsheet of Top Computers that has always struck me as having little value, unless one is running PPS (Sieve), exclusively. Even if one has the patience to page down past the first couple of hundred entries, it is not apparent what non-PPS (Sieve) tasks are behind the statistics. Would it be possible to create a similar page using only the tasks from the current/latest challenge, so that there is a consistent basis for comparison?

I'd been thinking about asking for a similar request.
It'd be great to see the top computers for each of the available subprojects.

I was thinking about it being a revision of the "Fastest CPU" link under "Other"

Then I must ask how it is possible to publish the standings during and after each challenge?

Perhaps I was unclear as to what I am proposing. I am NOT asking for a dynamically produced report like the Top Computers report. I only referenced that report because I like the format and the content (and the code is already written).

I am proposing that the challenge standings that currently consist of "Individuals" and "Teams" presentations be expanded to include a "ComputerIDs" category, as a static report at the end of each challenge. This would provide information that the Top Computers report promises, but fails to deliver.

We temporarily suspend database purging for the app(s) involved in the challenge. It's something that needs to be carefully thought out beforehand so as not to overwhelm the database.

My first answer, while correct, isn't the best answer. I was replying to your "But the challenge..." question, and as far as the challenges go, that answer explains why we can't do that permanently for all apps.

But your original question was "Why can't the top computers list be broken out by sub-project?". My first answer doesn't actually answer this question.

The BOINC system inherently includes the top computers list. You'll find it on almost every BOINC project's website. It gets its data from the host table, which contains fields for total credit and recent average credit. A very simple SQL query extracts the information from that table to produce that report.

While we do have a different table that contains sub-project-level informat for hosts, it does not contain RAC information. While it is theoretically possible to show *total* credit by application, we simply don't have RAC-by-application data. So at best, these reports would show "which computer ran for the most days" rather than "which computer is fastest". It would be of limited usefulness.

Could RAC-by-application be added? Certainly, since we can probably do anything if we want it badly enough. But it's a lot of work, with modifications to a lot of systems, and it's not worth the effort. Among other things, this would require modifications to all of the validators, and modifying the validator is potentially risky and requires a lot of testing.

Michael,

No offense intended, but you are answering questions that I never asked. Must be some crosstalk involved. I will give it one more shot, and then shut up.

During any given challenge, the database purge is suspended for the given project for the duration of the challenge. While the challenge is ongoing, the subset of tasks that are within the time restrictions are queried and enumerated every 15 minutes or so. The results are presented broken out by individuals and teams, and after the challenge completes the final results are stored away for anyone to see, far into the future. The purge is reinstated, but the results are still visible on the Challenge Series page.

Why cannot the results query also break out the results by computer ID?

Sier"pi"nski's Birthday Challenge (SoB-LLR): Individuals | Teams | ComputerIDs

The table may have some difficulties if an individual has chosen to list their computers as anonymous. The capability to make a connection between user and computer (i.e., same score/tasks) would negate the anonymity.

Now THAT is what I would much rather see than have a pc come up totally missing, just say 'anonymous' if a user has elected to not have their stats shown with of course NO links back to the person at all.

Read back a few messages for the reason this is a bad idea. If this is done, anonymous computers would have to be omitted.

(I do not understand the purpose of "anonymous" computers in the first place, but maybe I will make another thread about that.)

Maybe a challenge leaderboard for "computers" should not be on the level of individual hosts (so not like the entries on the list "/top_hosts.php") but more like on the level of the self-reported architecture like on the list "/cpu_list.php".

I agree with this, it could be a table by processor type with the min, max, avg of credit and the sample size. The comparison would be much more difficult for challenges where GPU participation is allowed since then you run into CPUs potentially submitting the tasks, multi-GPU systems, and multi-GPU systems with multiple types of GPUs in them.

Let's get back to basics. Rather than asking "What?", I'm asking "Why?" Why do you want a new report? For what are you going to use it? Is it for bragging rights? Is it to help decide what your next purchase should be? If it's the latter, does this page give you the information you need?

For me, I would use the information to inform a next purchase. I am focused on SOB tasks. So I know that I want something with 2 AVX-512 units, and a cache big enough to fit them, but I don't really know where the sweet spot is between cost and performance. From the list you linked, I see that some i9-9900k's are at the top. What I don't know (or maybe just don't understand) is if these i9's are scoring so well due to large LLR performance like I'd want for a SOB machine, or if they are great at cranking out PPS or GFN or AP work units. Based on my, admittedly limited, understanding the characteristics for each type of work differs.

If I'm failing to understand and the stats I'm looking for are available, I'd very much appreciate learning.

Thanks

As far as I can tell, the entire idea of challenges, or credits in general, is for bragging rights, so that is a given.

When it comes to hardware purchases/upgrades, none of the existing reports in the leader board or fastest categories are reliable, because they are based on recent activity, and everyone is engaged in different activities. They are apples-to-oranges comparisons. The only time that an apples-to-apples data collection is available is during a challenge.

The SoB-to-SoB comparison that is possible at the end of the current challenge cannot be obtained from Top Computers, although information on that page is what we would like to see.

Thanks

Whetstone is just bulk floating point, it really isn't taking AVX/2/512 into consideration. My 8 yo i5 3570 and top of the (Intel) line i9 10980XE are within a couple hundred points of each other in the Boinc benchmarks.

Many of us on these forums run a wide variety of hardware at varying levels of extremeness and can tell you the stats you're after or give you recommendations based on what you want and your budget. Based on what you say above, this is my two cents without knowing what your budget really is:

If you're looking for 2 AVX-512 units, you're already looking at a very limited list of CPUs: Used Skylake-X (7000X/9000X) or new Cascade Lake-X (10000X) CPUs. There are also Skylake-SP/Cascade Lake-SP/Ice Lake-SP (coming soon) 6000+ series Xeons, but those are super expensive for lower relative performance. My 10980XE is close to fitting 2 SOB's in its cache, but not quite, and I get better efficiency by running 2x9 threads. Cache requirement is only going to increase, so lower core counts will be more limiting in that area, but they can be found for much less.

I should also say that HEDT and "bang for buck" are not two things that really go hand in hand. You can get used 7980XE/9980XE CPUs for a little less than a new 10980XE (think $700-800), and you'll find the maximum cache, there. BUT, the boards are expensive. You will need to buy a big, expensive and high quality cooler (skip air, go straight to the biggest AIO liquid cooler you can get or fit), because these chips will use a ton of power, especially once you find out how low the default AVX-512 clocks are and decide to overclock them to something more reasonable. Of course, all Intel and AMD CPUs will use a ton of power if you want to let them run at their top stock clocks (new 11900k will pull 300W without overclocking, Threadrippers can do 500-1000W easy). In a modern CPU, performance potential at stock is directly correlated with the cooling capacity of the system.

For comparison, I run my 10980XE at 3.5-3.8GHz AVX-512 speeds (stock 2.7), depending on project. It uses 350+W at those speeds, and with the best 420mm liquid cooler making moderate noise, sits in the mid 80s Celsius. I could easily add more speed to that if I wanted to put up with the noise or go custom liquid cooling.

I hope I'm not scaring you off, just want you to be aware of what you're getting into, especially with cooling.

Let's get back to basics. Rather than asking "What?", I'm asking "Why?" Why do you want a new report? For what are you going to use it? Is it for bragging rights? Is it to help decide what your next purchase should be? If it's the latter, does this page give you the information you need?

Can the page be sortable by a user? ie click on a column to sort the data by it instead of however it's sorted now? Of course the default for everyone would be what it is now if you leave the page and then come back to it to keep things neat and tidy on your end.
