Hopefully the driver nerf won’t impact the workloads that we run here.

I don't think so as it's saying the driver will specifically detect ethereum (why not others?) calculations and slow them down.

While it might be a good thing for gamers, I really don't like this approach. Crippling the hardware you sell intentionally is a bad move and almost always out of financial reasons.

So I suspect they are not about the gamers. If so, they could just up the production of the RTX cards instead of introducing a new line. I rather think this is so nvidia can charge higher prices for non-gaming applications and milk the miners.

They can surely do that for all I care, but then be honest and don't go "we at nvidia are gamers through and through".

Concerns like these have been expressed... well, everywhere. It remains to be seen how this works. Most people assumed that someone will find a way to hack the drivers to bypass it, but nvidia seem confident with latest I saw claiming that it isn't a pure driver limitation, but works in conjunction with silicon and firmware. No more info than that, but I read it as the driver requires to be signed and unmodified to run thus preventing trivial modification. We'll see how it really goes in due course.

Also on the production side, it seems to me that the lower cards in the line are probably Turing based, not Ampere. If the goal is to get more Ampere to gamers, that might help in the short term since Turing are fabbed at a different location than Ampere, the latter suspected of being a limit to why they can't just increase production to meet demand.

I'll be watching with interest on the 3060 sale date in just under a week to see how effective this really is. There's still a lot of gamer demand so even if mining demand is removed, it wont necessarily be smooth sailing.

If this method works, I suspect they could apply it to future card launches also. Especially if they refresh the existing higher models. Of course, they can't touch those now, but a refresh is a new offering and could be.

Theoretically yes...? But I don't trust Nvidia's drivers to know what their doing if my fun days with the Gtx 970 are anything to go by.

My biggest question in all of this is whether the CMP HW line will be good for crunching. It may turn out that the new cryptocurrency mining cards are a great budget offering for dedicated crunchers, especially if they are Turing-based, but without the ray tracing capabilities or video output.

The Nvidia site doesn't give a lot of details. Can't wait for a true specifications sheet on these :)

Hopefully they can be used as good secondary crunching cards. I wouldn’t mind that, but will still be very disappointed if crunching on RTX cards is also artificially lowered.

But what is point doing this? Solution is very simple, we all know that many rigs with 3090 crunching ETH without any problem right now. Use current driver and problem is solved, because crunchers dont need latest drivers, they dont care is few FPS more in some games...
And maybe Windows will not stay on current drivers but Linux will. So you cannot change past...

I think this is specifically about keeping the price of an RTX 3060 low. Here's a table of GPU mining efficiency. Assuming half a 3060 Ti's hash rate, a 3060 would be potentially valuable to miners at its current MSRP. But, importantly, if its price went much higher they'd shy away from it.

Use current driver and problem is solved

There is no "current" released driver supporting 3060. When it is launched that driver will include the mining cripple feature.

FYI... the limiting of mining on the upcoming 3060 isn't just a driver limitation. NVidia has leaked that it is part of the encrypted vBIOS.

In that case story is over before even started

They can't cripple already sold cards as the only speed record that'll set is how fast people will take them to court. So this can only be applied to new offerings, starting with the 3060. If their software feature is robust enough, then I can see them possibly rolling this out on future offerings, such as the long rumoured high vram variations of higher cards.

This would be ideal, however, in that case miners would use the CMP line voluntarily. No need to cripple the RTX card.

I'm quite sure this is nvidia trying to charge every customer as much as possible. So it will very likely be more expensive than the RTX on a per-hash basis.

Well something needs to be done! GPU prices are just ridiculous at the moment.
I can sell my 2017 Vega 56 for the same price I bought it for new! Crazy.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/thanks-to-miners-and-scalpers-ebay-pricing-for-ampere-rdna2-gpus-continue-to-rise

There's no way I'd support paying these stupid prices.
