Guess who was a big enough sucker to go out and buy a 9900KS even though I have a perfectly good (and relatively fast) processor already?

It just got here, and Im too lazy to dismantle everything right now, but I'll post some benchmarks for those interested as soon as I find the motivation to install it.

EDIT: went looking for thermal paste and found two boxes of five and a quarter inch floppies.... lol.

I don't know if the BOINC benchmarks are per physical core or per logical core, but they are as follows
(both chips running at 4700 MHz AVX):

Whetstone
8700K 7.0807 GFLOP/s
9900KS 7.7125 GFLOP/s ( + 8.92 %)

Dhrystone
8700K 32.0903 GIOP/s
9900KS 36.4238 GIOP/s ( + 13.5 % )

LINPACK (average of 100 runs)
8700K 208.2433 GFLOP/s
9900KS 274.0748 GFLOP/s ( +31.61 %)

Efficiency (LINPACK/Watts)
8700K 1.4362 GFLOP/s per Watt
9900KS 1.7265 GFLOP/s per Watt (+ 20.2 %)

I haven't run enough tasks for this to be valid, but it seems to run llrDIV about a minute faster per task.

If anyone knows if the BOINC benchmarks are per physical core or per thread, please let me know.

It's probably behind that stack of eight inch floppies.

semi final opinion time:

I think I have it stable with reasonable thermals with the following configuration

Cooling -
Dark Rock Pro 4 modded with 3 Noctua NF-A12x25 fans

Clock Speed: 5000 MHz
AVX Offset: - 3

Memory
16 GB @ 4000 MHz 15-15-15-30

Vcore 1.215
System Agent 1.165
VCCIO 1.150

On the off chance you pick one up and run it on an EVGA Z390 Dark, set core voltage to OVERRIDE, not
adaptive, otherwise it will hammer the CPU with a lot more voltage than it needs and you will thermal throttle. I have the latest BIOS update, so they may want to take a look at that.

At any rate, the gains over an eighth generation chip are not insignificant, but whether they justify the price is something each person has to decide for themselves. Just beware that if you do get one, people are buying these up and reselling them for hundreds of dollars more than MSRP (which is $513). I lucked out and got mine for less than 600, shipped, only about twenty bucks more than if I had bought one locally with sales tax. Whatever you do, don't go pay 1300 at Silicon Lottery for a 5.2 GHz binned chip, the stats aren't out yet, but I'd be willing to wager a fair amount that you will get a chip that can do 5.2 (with adequate cooling, of course) by random chance - these chips were already prebinned by Intel after all.

Hopefully this is helpful to anyone who is thinking about picking up the latest and greatest (and I suspect last) Coffee Lake chip.

On a trip to Geneva visiting friends, I visited CERN's science display/museum. I was standing beside a big hunk of mainframe and telling them how I used these in the old days, then turned around and to my astonishment on a tabletop under a plexiglas case Time Berner-Lee's Nextcube was right there, with a note saying this was the world's first web server.

That's cool. I wouldn't mind having a NeXT. Right now I have

1.) the computer I run BOINC on,
2.) enough parts to almost build another (i need a Z370/390 motherboard and another power supply)
3.) an Apple IIe modded with the CFFA 3000 and a TransWarp accelerator (now we're talking speed!),
4.) a Macintosh G4 cube that I picked up on a whim,
5.) a 2005 Mac Mini (Intel Core Solo @ 1.5 GHz),
6.) there's a Pentium III 600 MHz out in my garage, but I hav no idea if it's still working.

plus I 've got some stuff at my moms house (there's a Texas Instruments 99-4A for sure, but I don't know if it still works), and other odds and ends for old computers

not exactly as cool as the worlds first server!
