It looks like about 1 in 20 of my "Completed and validated" tasks has the (1st) tag. E.g. in my "Genefer 15 v3.21 (OCLcudaGFN15)" tasks.
Do 20 people validate each task?
Or are newbie tasks biased towards validation?
Or is it some kind of race who finishes the task first?

Thanks

It's a race. It only matters who is first when a task happens to be testing a number that is prime. Then the 1st tag indicates who is acknowledged as the "prime finder".

The "prime finder" has certain benefits.
1) large enough primes are reported under that person's name in the Top 5000 Primes list (T5k).
2) megadigit primes earn the finder a megaprime counter badge (or badge increment).
3) certain special forms of primes have their own badge for the first one found of that form.

For example, have a look at the badges of the user Robish. Hover your mouse pointer over a badge for a pop-up text description of the badge.

Yes, examining work unit pages, I see that it is a race.

In work unit 630737405 my computer got its GPU task 10 minutes earlier than the other computer, and the task's run time was only 101.41 seconds, but its "Time reported or deadline" was six hours later, whereas the other computer reported within seven minutes.

Why would my computer (doing nothing else at that time of night) have such a long delay?

Late-night Internet outage is a possibility, but seems unlikely.

Could my computer be queuing up too many tasks?

Could my computer be queuing up too many tasks?

Yes, it likely is if you haven't told it not to. In your computing preferences (linked from your account page), there is the following setting: "Maintain enough work for an additional [] days". I believe the default is 0.25 days, but if your computer is essentially always connected to the internet, you can and should set it to 0.
