AP27 CPU competing with GPU wingman?

If I'm running AP27 CPU version (Yeah, yeah I know...) is my wingman also assigned the WU CPU app to make it "fair" or can wingman be assign a GPU version of the same WU?

The wingman will not necessarily be running the CPU version. There's no no correlation bewteen what he's running and what you're running. In fact it's probably a lot more likely he'll be running the GPU version because GPUs run those jobs so much more quickly.

No, your wingman might get a GPU task.
But, even then, the CPU crunched task might be finished (I mean, returned) first (on some rare occasions).
For instance, see this work unit.
I got a CPU task for computer 906599.
My wingman got a GPU task for computer 973518 (26 minutes after I had received mine).
I returned the result first.
In this other case, I got a CPU task, my wingman got a GPU task (at about the same time) and I lost :([/url]

Bringing a knife to a gunfight is never going to be a fair fight.
Yes, CPU tasks are likely to be paired up with GPU tasks.
However, if your concern is "I wan't be the discoverer of the next AP27", you're kind of missing the big picture. Yes, you would likely be the double checker because you're running 50 times slower. But you're even more like to be neither the finder nor the double checker because you're processing 50 times fewer tasks.
And because A) GPUs are doing 50 times more tasks, and B) not too many people run AP27 on a CPU, your CPU task will almost certainly be paired up with a GPU wingman who is going to finish the task yesterday.
tl;dr Knife in a gun fight. If you came to participate, great. If you came to win, you brought the wrong weapon. You can't throw a gazillion CPU cores at a GPU project and expect anything other than being the double checker for a lot of discoveries.

Thank you for the clarification everyone!
