In preparing for the AP27 Oktoberfest Challenge some of you may be wondering "How many more points can I get by running my CPU also?" I did some testing and here are the results.
Core i7 7700k Kaby Lake 4 core
completes 4 workunits in about 47000 seconds
equivalent to 1 workunit done every 11750 seconds
Core i7 3770k Ivy Bridge 4 core
completes 4 workunits in about 62000 seconds
equivalent to 1 workunit done every 15500 seconds
Ok, now let's compare these CPUs to a 5+ year old Maxwell generation Nvidia GTX 750ti. Not exactly a high end GPU, but very power efficient when released.
It completes a workunit in 6800 seconds.
So, as you see the lowly 750ti is more than twice as fast as the Ivy Bridge CPU and still much faster than even the Kaby Lake!
Newer GPUs such as RTX 2080 Ti can be over 20 times faster than the Kaby Lake and the fastest current GPU, a Tesla V100 is over 45 times faster!

I recall someone (perhaps Michael) once said, in another post about using CPUs for challenges where GPUs can run the workunits; "It's like bringing a knife to a gunfight". These numbers pretty well demonstrate that :)

When I threw my 1950X at the AP challenge last year, it took a bit over 18 hours for one task. That's with HT on (pretty sure I established that it does help a bit for AP), so if you have all 32 threads loaded, it amounted to one task every 35 minutes, or close to a GTX 980 in throughput. Not too shabby.

Yeah I was thinking just that. Bring 32 knives to the gunfight :)
Still dead probably but a few might land home :)

We can HT AP?
No, you cannot multithread the AP CPU app.

Looks like my dual 2080TIis take about 8 minutes per unit, while the cpu, although it is a fast one will take about 15+ hours.
The dual 1080 Ti's Double on the gpu compared to the 2080Ti's.

I am wondering why after nearly 26 hours of running on 4 cpu's the Octoberfest why the elapsed time indicates only 50% of the total hours ran? Maybe the cpu's are not running at more than 50% effort?

Go to Options > Computing Preferences in the BOINC Manager.
Check the value for "Use at most X% of CPU time". That value should be at 100 for the best performance. You probably have it set to 50.
