I just looked at my 2nd computer which is running 8 * ESP (single thread) and 7 of them say they have only been working for an hour or so. And 1 for about 9 hours! Its been running for over a day! No ESP have been finished yet so this computer has been slacking. Does anyone have any ideas why or where I should look to fix this? The computer crashed a couple of times in the day leading up to the challenge and I reverted back to settings/drivers/whatever from an earlier date - which didn't look like it disrupted Boinc's ESP activities - but it may have.
Cheers, Nick

Going by the event log, my computer hasn't slacked - it probably has finished * 8 ESP - and because I reverted to earlier settings in the middle of Boinc doing its thing - I haven't been credited for them. I don't know. The first event in the event log is now "cc_config.xml not found, using defaults". The event log says it has completed tasks and got new work. Moral is not to revert to earlier settings in the middle of a challenge. Probably.

Yes in the middle of a challenge it is best to adhere to the adage "step away from the keyboard" once things are running. I don't know if it works to change the threading of a particular task part way through. I wouldn't bother trying.

I see you have several ESP tasks turned in with at least one validated. So that is good. BOINC moves in mysterious ways.

Good ol' computer 1 - Shake - has finished 6 tasks. Oh well, I've lost 8 'completed' tasks. I suppose I now know that reverting windows settings will delete Boinc's config file. Whoops!

Bake crashed again right near the end of the challenge - its getting diagnosed by the place I bought it from in case its something more than a windows problem.

I have just noticed that PG reckons Bake has 32 processors which means hyper-threading turned on 'by itself' as I didn't change this setting back in the BIOS. Could this setting changing in the middle of doing PG make your computer crash? (When the computer crashed I had the setting of no new work from PG - so the number of WUs wasn't going to reflect the hyper-threading change)

What are the temperatures? It certainly could be software, but it could also be hardware.

What are the temperatures? It certainly could be software, but it could also be hardware.

I have been running 8 cores (of 16) and I have found the temperatures to be cool - in the 50s. I have run many different sub-projects and always in the 50s. (I run only 8 cores because of current throttling.) I have read elsewhere that people have problems with heat by running AVX512 but I haven't seen this. When Bake crashed it was only running 2 WUs. With the computer back where I bought it, I am taking the opportunity to install a proper graphics card, so I'll find out if heat problems - that other people see - are due to the graphics card.

I got my computer back. Apparently the CPU wasn't seated properly. They diagnosed this by the memory seeming to be not registering - and the memory worked fine in another computer. I'm not sure how the computer 'worked' for 5 months with the CPU as it was. Fingers crossed it's now fixed.
