I'm throwing around the idea of getting a system built and wondering if I go AMD? The 24 core threadripper 2970WX has become more reasonably priced recently. Does anyone have any experience with 16, 24 or 32 core threadrippers? The other option is another intel 99xx-X system with AVX512 such as the 9920-X which has half the cores of the 2970WX. Any ideas or other suggestions would be very much appreciated. Not sure yet if I will get a powerful graphics card too - I'm kind of thinking that 1 is enough - but I might change my mind.

Can't speak to the cpu question but I can say you never have enough graphic cards.

Hi Rick,
After writing the post I added a graphics card to the hypothetical build. I can see how I need/want 2 graphics cards. Thanks for your post.

Simplifying things a lot:

Tier 1: If you want to run LLR, you can't beat the Skylake-X CPUs (or the Xeon's that also have dual AVX-512 units.) Consider these CPUs to run at speed 1.0.

Tier 2: Next best would be any other Intel CPUs or the brand new AMD Zen 2 architecture CPUs. They run at speed 0.5.

Tier 3: The bottom tier is any AMD CPU that isn't a Zen 2. These run at speed 0.25.

If you can afford a Skylake-X system, I'd go with that. That's the king of the hill. If not, I'd probably go with Zen 2 as it's now equivalent to the non-AVX-512 Intel CPUs and is more affordable. I'd stay away from any AMD CPU that's more than a week old, however. They have more cores, but they run at half the speed of Intel. Ryzen 3 is the first AMD CPU that runs at full speed.

Zen 2 might be the best bang for the buck. You can put the money you save into a good AIO water cooler and a better GPU.

EDIT: Changed "Ryzen 3" to "Zen 2".

Thanks Michael. I can dump the threadripper idea. I didn't know they were so terrible at LLR. I will investigate Ryzen 3 and compare costs with a Skylake-X system.

Firstly let's clarify AMDs marketing name scheme. The "good" CPUs for LLR are Zen 2 based. That's the simplest way to say it, as it refers to the architecture. These are currently sold as Ryzen CPUs with model numbers 3600 and above. Ryzen 3000 series CPUs below 3600 use older architecture. Ryzen 3 is a product level (like Intel i3) and may refer to CPUs from any series.

The original Threadripper almost makes up for its weak FPU by having a LOT of cores. The complication remains that they're separated over different physical dies, and not all are connected directly to local ram. So if you were to get that, it would probably be best to treat it as 4x6 cores, or even 8x3 cores as my understanding is that L3 cache is shared per CCX, not per die.

Intel CPUs with AVX-512 are not without their own problems also. They sure run fast, but they also use a lot of power while doing so. You need a top level cooling system if you are considering this.

For a dedicated cruncher, the value point is probably one of the new Ryzen 3600+ CPUs. The value would be diluted per system. Suffice to say, the higher the overall cost of the system, the higher up the CPU chain you can go for value. For now it is probably the 3900X with 12 cores, since the CPU is already competitive "per core" and dilutes the cost of the rest of the system. You can go with a good quality older generation motherboard, as the newer ones only really offer faster IO (PCIe 4.0) which isn't beneficial for crunching. Since you will be aiming to do as much work locally in the CPU, the ram speed isn't so critical. Depending on pricing, I'd aim for something in ball park 3000 to 3600 rated speed since it still impacts the internal bandwidth in CPU. As always, check compatibility as that is always a minefield for higher speed modules.

I think the difference between Intel and AMD right now is how you run the units. From what I've seen so far of the Zen 2 CPUs, you have to consider them per-CCX for optimal throughput. The 6 core CPUs are arranged as 2x3 cores, and similarly 8 cores are 2x4 cores. The 12 and eventual 16 cores would be four CCX. So they still have great throughput due to the generous cache included, but it isn't likely to scale for lots of threads on a single task. On Intel CPUs, they could scale better as their L3 cache is unified, but they don't have that much cache either... Again, this is for a single task on CPU. For total value throughput, go Zen 2.

Thanks heaps Mackerel,
Lots to think about. I have the added restriction that at this moment I can foresee only having room for one more PC. So I am thinking of getting one with the most ability to do LLR.
My experience with the 9960-X is that it runs quite cool - maybe that is due to the good cooling. I also have worked out that only running 8 cores allows some turbo to happen and the tasks relatively fly along. When running 8 cores for LLR there is some current throttling and if I run more than 8, the current throttling is continuous. From my experience with the 9960-X, I have concluded that any 99xx-X can really only run 8 * LLR so if I was to get another skylake-X, I think 12 cores is the most suitable - leaving 4 * cores for operating system and graphics.
Cheers, Nick

Its looking likely I will go ahead with the purchase of another computer which gets to the important issue of what to call it? The two I already have are called Shake & Bake. It has occurred to me to call it 'computer' in much the same way that someone might call their dog, 'dog'.

I like where you are coming from!
A small reason I bought the 2nd computer was so I could name the pair Shake & Bake - "If you're not first, you're last" from Talladega Nights.
The number of computers needed is (x + 1), where x is the number of computers you have now. Except this formula is now looking like (x + 2)! exclamation point, not factorial

The variation on that Talladega Nights quote that I've heard is "finishing second is just being first among the losers".

I actually won one of the PRPnet challenges several years ago. It was either WSS or WFS; don't remember. I got the app compiled and running on my GTX570's on a Linux box while the rest of the world was stuck in the slow lanes on their CPUs.

Gary
p.s. I haven't run PRPnet in quite a while now, but Team AtP used to kick a** in the standings there.

Yep that was fun back in the day. We need to get WSS and WFS moved to PG. Course I think I read somewhere that it will not happen. Can you imagine the strain it might put on the server especially if they were the same size as they were back then? Fun times in the old days. Oh and congrats on your win!

Talladega Nights.

What a great movie.

A really great movie!
I also love the bits of comedy those guys do to pass the time.
John C Reilly with his "Check it out! with Dr Steve Brule". "Chicken and egg can" is very good. And Will Ferrell with sketches like "Bat Fight" and "Green Team" which must have been made a while ago now but still hilarious.

I've decided to not buy a PC right now. I think AMD might be bringing out a 16 core CPU in a month or 2 which will be interesting. Maybe I'll buy a system then? In the meantime, I'm probably going to buy a 2080Ti for my second computer 'Bake' giving me a total of 2.

I hope you are able to get a 2080Ti soon if you don't already have one. Wow they can crunch! Before the beginning of this year, I hadn't bought a computer able to do Primegrid since 2011 - and it passed on in 2013. it is fun doing some catching up. Since 2013 to the start of this year, I've only had a laptop and my experience has been that Primegrid fries laptops.

I hope you too can get a 2080Ti - the prices are still high but getting slightly more reasonable. A while ago I did some costing of buying a less expensive card and upgrading when the 2080Ti drops in price, and I worked out it was better value to just buy the 2080Ti right away.

I went a bit silly and bought a 3rd (and final) computer. I can't justify the purchase but what the hey?
I'm hopefully getting it in time for the next challenge so I can make a bigish contribution to AtP's total.
And I'll name it Quake - that was a great suggestion.

MY plan is to get the 3970x, or whatever they call it, the 24 core threadripper 3000 series.
I'd get the 16 core 3950x, but it just doesnt have enough pcie lanes, I'm already maxed out with my current cpu's 24 lanes and the ryzen is the same.
Shame though, the single core performance will be nice on the 16 core, not so much on the 24 core. I don't game but I do like single thread performance for certain un-optimized softwares.

I'm back for a little while.
Unfortunately with bitcoin, altcoins, mining is much more profitable then crunching. Nothing is making money at the moment so, instead of that I can crunch for some heat for a while.
