The Ides of March meant the end for Caesar. PrimeGrid hopes it means the same for a lot of k/n pairs in the Prime Sierpinski Sieve as factors are found for them.
PrimeGrid is offering a one day challenge to support the Prime Sierpinski Sieve. This sieve benefits both the Prime Sierpinski Project as well as Seventeen or Bust. To participate, please select only the PSP sieve in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 15 March 2008 00:00 UTC and end 16 March 2008 00:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 & 64 bit and Windows 32 & 64 bit.
This is a project wide effort to complete 50,000 WU's in a 24 hour period and bring the sieve depth to p=2500T (current depth is ~2400T). Not only will this be a GREAT milestone for the PSP and SoB projects, but it will also give a small stress test to PrimeGrid's servers. As PrimeGrid continues to grow, this will be a good indication as to the loads it will be able to handle in the near future.
Please come join the challenge and help PSP and SoB reach a GREAT milestone. Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only WU's that are issued and credit granted within the 24 hours will be counted.
Best of Luck in helping many k/n pairs meet their demise. :)

Future Considerations - draft proposal
Monthly challenges may become a regular occurrence at PrimeGrid. Therefore, there's a possibility that an annual competition may evolve which is similar to "Formula BOINC". Points will be awarded based on each challenge finish with an annual champion (individual and team) crowned at the end of each year.
Points for each challenge would be awarded as follows based on order of finish:
1. 100 points 11. 20 21. 10
2. 80 12. 19 22. 9
3. 60 13. 18 23. 8
4. 40 14. 17 24. 7
5. 30 15. 16 25. 6
6. 25 16. 15 26. 5

Thanks for the heads up Rebirther. We were unaware of the other challenges. We have since read up on them.
Nevertheless, we will continue as planned. We'll give more advanced notice of future challenges so individuals and teams can decide which ones they want to participate in.
As this will probably become a monthly event, it doesn't really make sense waiting for April/May. We'll have a challenge in those months as well. :)
As Rytis said, it's a choice. We'll leave it up to the individuals and teams to decide what to participate in.

With my single AMD Sempron 3000+ I won't be competing for the points, but I'll definately be there, and help you reach this milestone (I'll keep my pentium 4 LLR'ing). And I'm looking forward to more challenges of this kind, and hope other projects will follow this idea. Perhaps a little bit longer, one day is very little time for a challenge.

Perhaps a little bit longer, one day is very little time for a challenge.
Thanks for the input. Based on what we have planned so far, challenges will range from a day to a week. However, that does not preclude the possibility that future challenges might last longer.

Thanks for checking in jmblazek, I've already begun PSP sieve, and hope that my ~86 G/day will help make a difference... anywho count me in, now I just hope to see that we can reach those 25 T a day on that very special day :) Just hope that some of those with the proper connections can spread the word at RieselSieve, it could mean a world of difference, if they all decided to go sieve here for just that 1 day :) |

All you have to do is to go into the Primegrid Preferences and deselect all other subprojects accepts "Prime Sierpinski Problem sieve". By selecting the "Prime Sierpinski Problem sieve" as your only problem, you'll automatically for the future untill you change your preferences only receive PSP sieve WU.

Only work units issued AFTER 15 March 2008 00:00 UTC and received BEFORE 16 March 2008 00:00 UTC will be considered for credit.
This is an attempt to be as fair as possible to a variety of hosts competing. It will prevent the following:
- hosts downloading a lot of WU's before the start and then uploading the results during the challenge.
- hosts caching a lot of WU's during the challenge and then uploading the results after the challenge has completed.
We very much appreciate all the extra downloading and caching, but we want to be fair as well.

You can also set the "Get work for extra days" to 0, then everytime there is less work than 0.1 days a new WU will be requested and older ones reported as completed. But of course setting the value below 0.1 will always cause you to connect more often to the server. But please be adviced that more and more pressure might be put on the servers, so its always handy to have a margine of work which can compensate for unresponsive schedulers :)

With the recent switch in the US to DST, 0:00 UTC is now 8PM EST right?
My 64bit quad only connects sporadically to the internet so I will have to manually "turn it on" for prime grid and want to make sure my timing is right. :) |

Unfortunately, this is not possible at this time.
However, in the meantime, you can group your computers by using locations (home, school, work). Assign each computer to a location. For example, your P4's to home and your AMD's to school. Then set your PrimeGrid preferences - home to LLRing projects and school to sieving projects.
Then, to participate in a sieve challenge, all you would have to do is to change your school projects to whatever project is in the challenge.

Yes, this is correct.
For other time zones around the world, please use a time zone converter to see when 15 March 2008 00:00 UTC is in your time zone.
Here's a link to one of many time zone converters: The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
Just change the date to 15 March and select your location in the "Select place to convert to" field, then hit "convert time".

I won't be able to take part after all as I won't be home to manage my computers. I think the requirements that the WUs be issued and returned during the 24 hour period are a bit too strict as BOINC isn't very cooperative when left to its own devices.
Maybe I can get my laptop to play along but it usually prefers running whatever I set as my lowest resource share and with a more distant deadline. :p |

I've to some degree been able to have my systems on standby waiting for the start time. I had some sytems attached to Primegrid already that had no work while doing other projects. A few I had to attach and quickly stop new work from downloading. I was only partially successful and had to abort a few work unit. The rest should be done crunching before. As Philadelphia said, we have had some interest by other team members at SETI.USA and are hoping for a large turn out. Happy crunching and I hope the server can handle the traffic.

Keep trying. I had some issues also, saying that there was work but not for the PSP Sieve, even though the website said there was pplleennttyy. At about the third attempt it got some. I wonder if we did it to the servers . . . :)

I'm guessing that its the workunits in memory issue.. all the workunits are downloaded and then 5 seconds later, a new batch is read.. its just a matter of hitting at the right/wrong time. |

It means that you already have 800 tasks NOW. It's not a daily limit; once you return some, you'll get more.

First 12 hours of the challenge have gone well! Other than the WU per minute limit we hit for the first hour, the server has held up well. We have taken note of this issue for future challenges.
Almost all hosts had at least a little bit of work after 1 hour...and most had their cache full after 3 hours.
At 12:00 UTC, 186.1K WU's have been downloaded (EDIT: 77K WU's completed and uploaded). Our original goal was 50K and that was hit 1 hour 35 minutes into the Challenge (downloaded). Quite AMAZING!!! Just goes to show you the EXTRAORDINARY people of the BOINC community! Congratulations everyone...job well done!
But it's not over yet...we still have 12 hours to go. :) So we are advancing our goal to an unprecedented 250K WU's downloaded (150K completed and uploaded).

Hey John, is there any way to determine how many of those 186.1K have been crunched so far? I suspect there are some pretty large caches out there that will be crunching away long after the 24 hours are up. Would be interesting to see how the half way mark compares to the final tally.

Perhaps something to think about for next time, I don't know how complex it would be:
Configure a "sub project" just for the contest and let people choose that as their preference. You could also make those work units due at the end of contest, so that they'd get first priority and get crunched ASAP. By making it a subproject, you can kill the available number of workunits at the end of the contest and everything will revert back to normal. |

6 hours to go and all is well. The server continues to perform great.
At 18:00 UTC, 247.2K WU's have been downloaded with 115K WU's completed and uploaded. It's incredible but it looks like our "advanced" goals will fall soon - 250K downloaded and 150K completed and uploaded. Therefore, till the end of the challenge, the sky is the limit! :D

sorry, I must have trashed hundreds of wus. I saw the challenge. decided to join in. so I started with the computer on the left and just kept attaching until I had to start using VNC to get the rest attached(this means, 2 single cores, 2 quads, and atleast one of my duals) when I noticed the first had a bunch of "computation errors", then looking at all of them they all had them. I quickly set them to "no new tasks", but the damage was done.
the message tab yields:
output file PSP.yada yada, absent
computation for task yadayada finished.
The boinc versions range for 5.10.8 x86-64 to 5.10.21 x86-64 for linux.

It seems that I will finish 53rd...
I'm wondering, how big a room one must have to be able to have so many computers to finish first... And how much power they use...
One good thing came out of this though - I found out that this subproject can run on Microsoft Windows NT4...

Now that we're literally in the home stretch, just a question: When this is all done, is there going to be a list of all of the participants and what they contributed, in points, wus, and factors? Not just the top 100, but everyone. With my dual-core, there's no way I'd make it into the top list, but I'm still interested in what my computer did in this challenge.
If you're not planning on doing this for this challenge, then it's an idea for the next one. It helps me feel like I still contributed even though I don't belong to a team and have a single, "dinky" computer.

Hmm, I also use only a single C2D and on the last standings I was on position 73. Let´s see, there I am in a few minutes. But I have to say, that the use of a 64bit OS is not the badest change. ;)

The Ides of March Challenge is complete!
Congratulations everyone on a job well done. The participation was well beyond our expectations. We are overwhelmed with the response. This has been an excellent first challenge for us and definitely "whets our appetite" for more. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. So return in a couple of weeks to learn about our next challenge.
Here are some preliminary stats on the Challenge:
The server held up exceptionally well. After the start of the challenge 15 March 2008 00:00 UTC, we quickly exceeded the WU buffer allowed to the PSP sieve project. Theoretically, it should have been 1200 WU/min but because of server loads, it ranged between 600-900 WU/min.
Work was being sent out as fast as the server could send it. However, for the first hour, many hosts continued to receive "no work" messages (PrimeGrid|Message from server: (There was work but not for the applications you have allowed. Please check your settings on the website.))
At 00:40 UTC the server load had dropped from its high. At 01:30 UTC, server load was back to "normal". Most hosts had received work by this time; however, cache were still not full. At 3:00 UTC, the rush was over and "no work" messages were occurring only occasionally.
We had a spike at the conclusion of the Challenge which delayed web access. This event lasted about 15 minutes.
At 00:00 UTC 16 March 2008, 292.5K WU's had been downloaded with 167.4K WU's completed and uploaded. We exceeded our initial goal of 50K WU's and our "advanced" goal of 250K WU's downloaded.

We'll have to get back to you with this one...but, we started with 130.1K WU's in the queue at the beginning. During the challenge 200K WU's were inserted up to p=2788.5T. Of course not all WU's were completed, but it's safe to say we exceeded p=2500T. :) We may even have reached this during the unexpected run-up to the beginning of the Challenge.
An incredible milestone for both the Prime Sierpinski Project and Seventeen or Bust.

I had a great time doing this.
I don't have a major crunching machine but I enjoyed the hourly updates to see how things were going. I did finish in the top 100 (barely) at #82.

Follow up comments
We have read all the comments mentioned since the beginning of this thread and have taken notes. :) We hope to incorporate as many of the suggestions as possible (and feasible) for the next challenge.
While we were not prepared to monitor number of factors and top factors, we were able to determine that at ~17:30 into the Challenge, the top factor submitted was p~2714.754T, well beyond our p=2500T goal (we were around p=2450T a few days before the start). Our estimate is that it may have gone as high as p=2755T by the end of the Challenge. However, we were not complete up to that p as many WU's remained "in progress" below it. Nevertheless, an incredible achievement.
Additionally, the Challenge generated ~12.5 TFLOPS of computing power! Our 60 day average is around 6 TFLOPS.
Thanks again to all the individuals (and teams) that made this a great challenge. It was a nail-biter to the end. :)

Maybe you should give both numbers:
- Highest T already finished
- Lowest T still in progress
In general, this will be available once the range statistics page (available at server status) is active again. It remains inactive while the database recovers. :) We will not know actual starting and ending values for the challenge...another note for next time. :)
Currently, the highest completed is p=2791.920T. As you can see, the PSP sieve is still advancing rapidly even the day after. It is unknown how long this "challenge effect" will last...but it's an excellent secondary benefit.
Also, the Generalized Cullen/Woodall Sieve and TPS will remain inactive as those too are database intensive.

I have an idea to lower the load on the server next time you have your ides challenge day:
1. We (as could maybe be done already by now) double the length of the WU so we of course reduces the pressure on both database and server with half, which gives room for more participants.
I'm not sure, how long it takes to read in the ~2 Million candidates in the .dat file, but we are sieving 11+6 k's, and the less time spend on reading the faster we will be sieving. So maybe we can also in the future, give room for some really big sieve units (10 G, 100 G, 250 G, 500 G, 1 T, 5 T etc.) which again will make this kind of sieving more interesting for those counting their production since they will deffinently find something. It will again (at least I think) lower the pressure on the server, if the WU creation doesn't get to tuff in itself. And finally it might save some time and give more sieving on less time, if there has to be read less and crunched more ;)
Well I dunno, and actually I'm not capeable of rejoining PrimeGrid till hopefulle monday, since I'm not connected yet to the internet where I live, but still I would like to hear your oppinions :)
