My adult son, living with us, had his computer die late last night.

This is a computer that started life as a refurbished Gateway desktop plus an upgraded power supply plus an upgraded GPU. It was built for his brother when he went away to college and wanted a decent gaming machine. Since then, the GPU has been upgraded again (final configuration was a GTX 960) and the case was replaced with a much larger CoolerMaster case with better cooling. Eventually he wanted a better CPU that could handle VR and bought a new computer. He sold this one to his brother.

It just died with no warning.

After some tinkering around using a power supply testing tool, I decided that the PS had failed.

I grabbed an old PS from the parts bin, and Frankensteined it to the MB and other parts from outside the case to see if the MB would power up. It did, but the GPU glowed orange from near the PSIE power plug.

And there was that burning silicon smell.

I'm not sure which was the root cause, but both the GPU and PS are definitely dead now.

Running over to Microcenter this morning when they open to replace them. Plan is to get:

https://www.microcenter.com/product/606545/ventus-xs-geforce-gtx-1650-overclocked-dual-fan-4gb-gddr5-pcie-video-card and https://www.microcenter.com/product/476076/tx550m-550-watts-80-plus-gold-semi-modular-atx-power-supply.

One of the two monitors is DVI, so it's better if the GPU has a DVI output.

Going from a not-modular Corsair 500W power supply to to modular Corsair 550W Gold power supply, and from the GTX 960 to a GTX 1650. I'm guessing the 1650 is roughly twice as fast as the 960 it will replace.

Anybody have any thoughts on the hardware selection?

1650 is the cause of many an argument on other forums. From the perspective of upgrading from a 960, yes it is improved, and depending on the version may not need extra power connector. If not significantly overclocked, it can fit in 75W from slot only, but manufacturers may decide to overclock more and thus do need the power connector.

If you don't care about power consumption and only want gaming performance, then an AMD card in that price range may be better value.

What about the 1660ti. I thought I saw a thread on its performance here. Reviews are very positive and it's only $100 more

probably going to stick with Nvidia simply because I know nothing about AMD GPUs. Wouldn't know where to begin.

Of course this all depends on what he wants to do with it and how much money you want to invest... I'd say most of the stuff we build for crunching is even overpowered for most gaming use these days. The expectations are most important here and can drive you anywhere between a $100 card and a $1500 card :)

I'd suggest to thoroughly test the MB -- if there was a power issue that killed the GPU, it's plausible that it could have also fried some of the PCIE stuff on the MB also.

The most bang for the buck is probably the 1660 at stock prices (in US dollars):

1650 $149 896 shaders ~6 shaders/dollar 1660 $219 1408 shaders ~6.4 shaders/dollar 1660 Ti $279 1536 shaders ~5.5 shaders/dollar

He ended up getting the 1660. I was surprised that it's a THREE slot GPU. I haven't seen that before. Fortunately, that wasn't a problem.

It's for gaming. He liked Scott's advice to go with the 1660 and future proof it a little.

The MB is fine. I knew it was *mostly* okay because it was running even after the GPU blew.

I don't use his GPU for crunching -- GPUs tend to not last as long as CPUs, and it's not fair to run someone else's GPU that hard. It's just for gaming, and the 960 it replaced already allowed pushing all the sliders to the right. The 1660 won't run out of gaming power for a while.

The CPU is a first gen i3. Yeah, it's old, but its more than adequate for gaming. Rarely do any games push even that CPU hard.

He ended up getting the 1660.

I've been eyeballing the 1660Ti as an upgrade to my older GPUs and decided to go ahead and buy one. It seems to be a pretty good bang for the buck... as much as I want to go all out on the RTX2080, I just cant justify it... anyhow, just plugged in the 1660Ti and it seems to be cranking along at about double the speed of my 1060s and WAY less heat than the previous two GTX950s.

You get the 1/2 size or is there even a full size? I was looking at those real hard as well.
