My i5-2400 CPU with Nvidia 440 GPU malfunctions when it comes to GPU(OpenCL) tasks.
For example, when GFN-15 is running, it runs to 47% and suddenly jumps back to 22% and never progresses again, even after I left it running for 1 hour or so. It's the same for other subprojects.

Are you running 4 cpu tasks AND 1 gpu task too? That's an awful lot of tasks for a machine with only 4gb of ram in it. Cut your cpu tasks to just 3 at a time and see if that helps, also look into getting more ram. 8gb should be enough for a Boinc only machine and alot of everyday usage machines too, 16gb of ram means the machine can run any tasks anywhere.

Genefer doesn't use a lot of memory, only 100 MB or so. For it to run out of memory means that other programs (either apps from other BOINC projects or non-BOINC programs) are consuming all the memory on your computer.

Looking at two of your Genefer tasks that failed, we see this:

Unhandled Exception Detected...

- Unhandled Exception Record -
Reason: Illegal Instruction (0xc000001d) at address 0x00414dec

That simply shouldn't be happening, and the problem isn't Genefer. You have a very common hardware configuration, so if Genefer was actually built with the wrong instruction set (which can cause the "illegal instruction" error) we would see this all the time. So it has to be something else.

Two possibilities come to mind:

1) Either Windows or your video driver is installed incorrectly or is damaged.

2) Your computer's hardware is malfunctioning. Besides being somewhat old (hardware does wear out, especially GPUs), the most common cause is overclocking. If either the CPU or the GPU is overclocked, I recommend setting the clock speeds back to stock to see if that solves the problem.

Note that these two different "problems" in the task that succeeded and the tasks that failed may actually both be symptoms of a common problem. Something's not working correctly on you computer, but unfortunately it's not obvious from this side what it is.

Although it's a bit unlikely, it's conceivable that the low memory error that we see in the good task might be causing the illegal instruction error in the failed tasks. I'd try shutting down everything else on the computer that you can, and see what happens. Maybe things will work better once you clear up the memory problem.

Actually, 2 tasks on 2 cores and 1 GPU with prime95 on the other 2 cores.

PS, does every GPU only have 1 core?

Just the opposite. GPUs are massively parallel computers with hundreds or thousands of cores. Your GT 440 has 144 cores.

A more modern RTX 2080 Ti has 4352 cores.

Unlike CPU cores, however, GPU cores are most efficient when they're primarily doing the same thing on different data as opposed to doing completely different tasks.

What about Radeon Vega 8?

Message 129417 - Posted: 13 May 2019 | 10:36:28 UTC - in response to Message 129380.

Actually, 2 tasks on 2 cores and 1 GPU with prime95 on the other 2 cores.

So all 4 cpu cores are busy doing something and the gpu is crunching too, I think that's at least part of your problem, not enough Ram to support all that.

Since you're already asking question in the PRPNet forum, why don't you ask this question there? It's off topic in this thread.

You can have more than one thing running on a GPU at a time, although it's usually not beneficial with the current tasks available on BOINC.

And where do we see the numbers we are tesing, like 121*2^8409643-1?

PPS-Sieve: You don't see those numbers.
AP26: You don't see those numbers.
GFN: The number being worked on can be seen in the stderr.txt file in the slot directory while the task is in progress. After the task is complete it's visible in the task display page on the website, in the stderr.txt display.

The CPU project numbers.

For LLR, the number can be found in a small file that's downloaded for each task. You'll find it in the slot directory. It's called llr.in.

The numbers being tested by LLR are all of the form k*b^n±1. K, b, and n, along with whether ± should be + or -, or in that file.

On the file line of the file is a letter, either M, P, or T. M and T mean that ± is "-", while P means "+". (The letters stand for Minus, Plus, and Twin.)

Near the end of the first line you'll find a single digit. That's B.

K and N are on the second line, in that order.

It was like this:
100000000000:T:0:2:3
4464574604175 1290000
SO it's 4464574604175*2^1290000-1?
Then what's the 3 for?

Yes.

I think it's time to introduce you to the LLR documentation.

Since I know you just installed PRPNet, go to the programs subfolder in your PRPNet installation and read the file readme_llr.txt.

You can if you want to start looking inside the XML files and reading the documentation for the sieve programs. It's not worth the effort, but if you really want to, consider it a challenge to figure it out. It's not very interesting.
