Hi Rytis,

i have a few questions for the "End of the life cycle of primegen application":

1. What is the highest calculated prime by primegen?
2. Will you provide new DVD's up to the highest calculated primes?
3. I cannot download the 6th DVD, only 93%. Is there any torrent out there in the world with 100%?

Regards
Stoffel

1. What is the highest calculated prime by primegen?

We will stop at 640G, so the biggest prime will be a little smaller.
2. Will you provide new DVD's up to the highest calculated primes?

Yes, once all data is returned DVD images will be built.
3. I cannot download the 6th DVD, only 93%. Is there any torrent out there in the world with 100%?

Right now I can't seed myself, so if nobody's got it, you'll have to wait for a while. I'll look into adding http seeds into the torrent files, or maybe use CDN network to distribute the files.

Hi folks!

The last prime of PrimeGen will be the 639,999,999,979
and this is the 24,480,641,557 th prime number (if start
counting with the "2" as number 1).

You want to know, where I do know this from?
Then take a look here:

http://mathemacher.dph-software.de/

"mathemacher" (= "MathMaker") is a projects collection of the
"Scientific Year of Mathematiks 2008" started by the ministry for
education and research.

Why are Primegen Wus still being generated, and how are they processed, when it is no longer possible to choose Primegen in the list of Sub Projects.

Am I missing something here? What is the fascination with PrimeGen and having DVDs of the first 25 billion primes? It is easy to produce that list of primes and would take less time to generate the list than to read such a list from disk.

Are you certain of that? And even if you are right, that's less CPU time spent on finding new primes and more CPU time spent on finding known primes. ;)

I believe rogue is right, but Primegrid has always stated it's primary goal was to implement PerlBOINC, not finding these primes. Now that PerlBOINC is retired the PrimeGen app's life cycle can come to an end, but Rytis has developed much more interesting applications. So let's crunch hell out of Twin Prime Search Cullen/Woodall Search, and Prime Sierpinski Project.

Both rogue and S@NL are absolutely correct. :) Additionally, no new work has been issued for primegen in quite a while. What you see remaining are "rogue" WU's left in the DB that require manual intervention. In due time, all will be cleared and primegen will be archived.
So let's crunch hell out of Twin Prime Search Cullen/Woodall Search, and Prime Sierpinski Project.

[edit] Oops, forgot 321 search[/edit]

Let's not forget the future projects in the Project Staging Area. There are several other projects PrimeGrid users can participate in while they are awaiting entry into PrimeGrid BOINC.

  • Sophie Germain Prime Search (5 single primes have already been found!!!)
  • Proth Prime Search
  • Generalized Cullen/Woodall base 13 Prime Search
  • 32+1 Prime Search

There's plenty of work (and primes) available. :) \
