So today is the annual "get the dang paperwork done" day. I know many folks do not procrastinate like I do.

So anyone who's not remembered, today is TAX day.

This of course probably only affects those of us in the US.

In at least some California counties, April 10th is property tax day. I guess they're hoping you think of them before the IRS since the deadline is earlier.

Anyway, as usual I owed big time. But I knew this going in, so it's not time to jump out the window yet.

Arkansas has been a big state for natural gas. We were lucky to get in on some land with my wife's side. It was billed as the next huge endeavor but died fairly quickly because of the frac'ing issues. Places that had not had an earthquake in forever suddenly started shaking daily not to mention the affects on the underground water tables and pollution.

So how does this work out? Presumably employees are paid net of some tax? Does everyone have to fill in a form?

In the UK most people don't fill in a form. Employers tell the Revenue how much people are earning and are told how much tax to deduct. For most people allowances for interest or dividends are so high that they are not a problem but the payers tell the Revenue anyway and these days I think the Revenue adjust the tax code to get the right amount of money without a form being lodged. High earners are required to fill in a form even if there is no extra tax to pay and the rules are significantly different for the self employed.

In a very simplistic explanation, yes everyone must fill out and send in a tax return unless they made less than a certain amount, don't work or are under a certain age. As an employee, you begin your employment by filling out a form telling your employer how much you would like to have withheld for taxes on each pay period. This can vary depending on how you want to report at the end of the year (ie today). The more you have withheld during the year the more/less you will have to send/get. Then you can credits (best part) for things like children and other areas and then you have deductions. These are made up of expenses you may have incurred during the year like sales tax, property tax, travel expense and the list goes on and on. Enough deductions then lowers your taxable amount and gives you more of a chance to get money back. There are so many different ways to figure your taxes that we have specialized accountants and lawyers who just handle these types of requests. I bet the tax code "book" might be 3-5 inches thick. There are different tax rates depending on your income level as well, if your are single, married, have kids or other qualifications.

Both the taxpayer and the IRS are estimating income taxes owed as the year goes on. So the vast majority of people need to file a return to square things up early in the following year. Some people like to get a refund but in my mind that's just closing out an interest-free loan that you gave to the government for the prior year. No thanks.

In recent years there has been an electronic filing option so there's no actual paper involved, if you so choose (which I do).

Most states impose their own income tax. Every state has different rules about how much to tax and what is taxable. A few cities do too.

Some taxes (e.g. property tax in California), the government "knows" how much you owe and just sends you a bill. No form to fill; you just pay.

Most of my income now that I've retired is from investments, from which there is no withholding, so I always owe tax at the end of the year. My pension does have withholding so that offsets it a little.
