Message 8276 - Posted: 16 Feb 2008 | 16:54:09 UTC

My account page says I found a TPS prime. Nice enough. How do I find out which task did this? Can't find anything in logs or on the web, and didn't get an email. So, it could be a doublecheck, but how do I even find out? Very odd...

Ok - will look there - thanks.

Pity I have to look through N thousand tasks at 20 per page looking for a number (would be worse for many other folks) - would be a nice enhancement to have a 'My Primes & Factors' page linked from the Your Account page.

Well - I found one with a score of 2.90 - other one not to be seen.

Still can't actually find any indication of what the actual prime is on the one I did find: http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=22604068

Looks like you did the check on that one. A link to you primes would be cool but from what I understand they fall off in about a week from your results but for junkies like you and me we could at least stare at them for the week and complain that we did not get the email..... I think i figured out why there is no link to them lol.

Seems pretty pointless not to let us know.
I think I'll go crunch somewhere else instead.

Stick around for a bit and see if your idea goes into effect, it may be an easy change. There may be a few bugs here and there but I know they are getting fixed as soon as possible.

I'm actually working on a publicly accessible database which will list all primes found by the participants of this project (since most of our primes will be too small to fit into top5000 list soon). It's a week or two away from public release, but not more.

I'm sorry if the first impression wasn't too good for you; however, think of the fact that you actually found something significant to the project - how many projects can offer you that? :)

I'm still getting estimates on 6 weeks for some of the ones I'm finding. It isn't much, I know, but gotta take what you can get.

My account page says I found a TPS prime. Nice enough. How do I find out which task did this? Can't find anything in logs or on the web, and didn't get an email. So, it could be a doublecheck, but how do I even find out? Very odd...

I'm concerned that you stated you didn't get an email. When a computer registered to you finds a Prime an e-mail is generated and sent to you. Said e-mail gives step by step instructions on how to register your prime with http://primes.utm.edu, obtain verification, and credit.

Do you have your "spam" filter set to where you aren't receiving the notification e-mail? Have you changed e-mail addresses since you registered with PrimeGrid? Sorry that I'm not answering your direct question but, I think the lack of e-mail notification is important.

All valid questions to ask, but no.

Primes found 1 - but no email, also a TPS prime. Is this because credit went to the other person that crunched the numbers? :(

Primes found 2 - no email either, both TPS primes.

1 was reported to http://primes.utm.edu/bios/search.php but if its not in the top 5000, this won't help. Not sure about the second, maybe in a few days it will show up?

Are there any plans to update the account page to list which primes a member has helped find?

FYI...in general, the prime notification email is working. If you notice a prime on Your Account page and did not receive an email, more than likely you were the double checker.

The only note to this is to make sure your "spam" filter is not blocking PrimeGrid's emails.

Efforts are currently underway to provide you with more information about the primes you find.

If you are still concerned about a prime, please PM me and I'll check whether you are the finder or double checker.

Good Luck to everyone on finding more primes. :)

I had a similar desire to know what I had found, so I created a small batch file fp.bat in the ‘www.primegrid.com’ directory to scan the results and list what it finds.

rem fp.bat is foundprime by squablusma
ECHO. | DATE | FIND /i "current">>fp.log
ECHO. | TIME | FIND /i "current">>fp.log
FINDSTR /C:"is prime!" llrTPS*_0 >>fp.log
FINDSTR /V /C:"no factors" psp_*_0 >>fp.log
ECHO. >>fp.log
EXIT

I have the process automated in the following way.
In BOINC Manager Preferences I have set Network usage allowed every day between hours of 18:00 and 18:15 (you can set your own preference).
In XP I have set up a scheduled task that runs fp.bat every day at 1 minute before the time BOINC will connect to upload results and download new tasks.

Most days I only list the date and time, but sometimes I get fp.log output listed below.

The current date is: Thu 02/21/2008
The current time is: 17:59:03.93
llrTPS_12265015_0_0:34401697341*2^333333-1 is prime! Time : 371.745 sec.

The current date is: Thu 02/28/2008
The current time is: 17:59:04.21
psp_sr2sieve_1438690_0_0:2330392788958253 | 55459*2^39253654+1

I only do Twin prime search and Prime Sierpinski Problem Sieve currently, but if anyone knows what shows up in other results, more FINDSTR lines could easily be added to the fp.bat file.

Hope this helps,
squablusma

I'm actually working on a publicly accessible database which will list all primes found by the participants of this project (since most of our primes will be too small to fit into top5000 list soon). It's a week or two away from public release, but not more.

I'm sorry if the first impression wasn't too good for you; however, think of the fact that you actually found something significant to the project - how many projects can offer you that? :)

Heya Rytis, since your post was on the 17th of feb and it was said to take a week or two, no more. My question is kind sir have you set up a way so when we look in our account and it says we found or checked a prime which one it is? Just asking since it has been about a month and I was very very curious to see which primes were found :) Thanks kind sir

Responded via PM.

Non-private response part:
I am sorry to say that, but the primes database has been delayed by personal stuff, and mathematicians not agreeing about scoring formula (we can't count primes from different subprojects equally, because they take different amounts of time to be found - but what is the correct amount of score to give for these primes?).

Right now I only have a cumulative ranking done, and not all primes have been imported yet - most of them are no longer present in the database, so I have to process backups to include them, and I'm not doing that until the scoring formula is done. Right now the database includes primes from approximately last 4 months.

Does this mean, that primes found with TPS doesn´get any longer to the TOP5000 list and we don´t get an email to repot it?

I can't answer your question but I can tell you that the list goes higher then 5000 even though they say its the top 5000 it lists more then that. SO I would hope it would still be submitted...

It's true that the Top 5000 Primes Database lists primes beyond 5000. However, they are all "special" forms. If you take a look here COMPLETE LIST you'll see that prime 5001 to ~5672 are all special forms.

If you're curious about "special" forms, you can view a list of them here Top 20. This page is the index to most of the "special" forms. Each category lists the top 20 of each form. Out of those top 20, the top 5 of each form makes it to the Top 5000 list. For example, the top 5 Cullen is listed 5120 in the Top 5000 list.

Therefore, the Top 5000 list is really the Top 5000 list plus the top 5 of each "special" form.

Since single primes are not a "special" form, once TPS primes at n=333333 no longer are large enough to enter the Top 5000, there will be no need to submit them as they will not be accepted. However, when/if the twin is found, that will make it on the list as the top twin even though it will be smaller than the 5000th prime.

I hope this helps.

What would it take to get this special prime set on our beta testing LLRNet and then into the normal list like wood.cullen primes? Here is the one I'm talking of http://primes.utm.edu/top20/page.php?id=25

PrimeGrid uses Jean Penne's LLR program for primality testing. LLRNet uses the same. The "special" form you are suggesting, Euler-irregular, requires Marcel Martin's Primo. At this time, we are currently focusing on projects that can be tested using LLR. As for getting Primo to run within a wrapper for BOINC...I'm not sure.

As for future projects, please see these threads, How sub projects are chosen and Upcoming Projects.

For additional primality and sieving programs, please visit here: Top programs sorted by Number of primes

For more information on Primo, see here: http://www.ellipsa.net/public/primo/index.html

For some reason my 64bit quad, which is set for sieving duty only, decided to download many hundreds of TPS WUs...

and I found my 1st prime!! :)

37880124975*2^333333-1 is prime!!!

I assume this means that 37880124975*2^333333+1 was already found to be prime making this a twin?

Anyway, I believe I reported it first (to PG via BOINC) but don't know where to go from here (if anywhere) as I didn't get an email from PG. Somehow my settings got altered or merged (I only want my other hosts set for TPS). I corrected it but am not sure if it was done in time.

Anyway, back to the sieve mines. Thanks.

Congratulations on your first prime. Unfortunately, it is not a twin. Only the -1 form is prime making it just a big single prime.

It appears that you have auto reporting selected in your preferences. The prime has already been submitted here.

Thanks. I recently updated the settings and I'm glad I did it in time. I didn't think it would be one of the top 5,000 primes though and I was hoping it was a twin.

This does make me wonder, though, why TPS wus can take 3 minutes while Cullens can take 24 hours.

This does make me wonder, though, why TPS wus can take 3 minutes while Cullens can take 24 hours.

The exponent greatly affects the size of the number and the time it takes to test. The higher the exponent, the larger the number. We currently search for primes in the form k*b^n+/-1. n is the exponent. For example:

37919977629*2^333333-1

k=37919977629
b=2
n=333333

Here's a summary of where the searches are currently:

TPS: n=333333 produces a number 100354 digits long
Woodall: n=4165950 produces a number 1254083 digits long
321: n=4226558 produces a number 1272322 digits long
Cullen: n=4441650 produces a number 1337077 digits long
PSP: n=4560351 produces a number 1372808 digits long

As you can see, TPS is substantially lower than the other prime searches. TPS is a constant n search which is why WU's stay the same length. All the other searches have increasing n; thus increasing WU times.

You can monitor their progress here: Server status

We also have other searches in our Project Staging Area with varying levels of n.

PPS: n ~ 130000 and increasing
321: n ~ 520000 and increasing
SG: n = 666666 fixed
GW13: n ~ 125000 and increasing
GC13: n ~ 105000 and increasing

Generally, the higher the exponent (n), the longer the testing time...however, the larger the prime will be and the longer you will remain in The Largest Known Primes Database. :)

Thanks for the explanation, it makes much more sense now. :) I like short WUs so for now I'll stick to sieving and TPS. On the front page I see

Available: Twin Prime Search 1823

I figured my quad can run about 75-80 TPS wus per hour which is over 1.8k per day. Since it has no permanent connection to the internet I would likely try to cahce in a few days of work. If I did decided to run exclusively TPS non-stop for a few days, would there be enough work?

Yes, there's plenty of work available. If you go to the Server status page and click on Range Statistics for Twin Prime Search, you'll see a chart listing completed (green), in progress (yellow), and available (red) WU's.

The number on the front page is just a buffer. The TPS buffer is 2000. WU's are taken from the available work and "prepared" for the buffer. From the buffer, they are sent out to the clients.

The recent discussion about discrepencies in the counts of primes found in the Top Prime Finders page versus the number shown in the Your Account page probably gives the real explanation of whysome people (including me) thought they weren't receiving notifications.

The number of notifications I've received correctly matches the number of non-double-check primes from the Top Prime Finders page, and I was being led astray by inflated number listed in the Your Account page.

So, that's part of the issue understood... :-)

Is this Prime? http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=27350104
From two days ago. The Credits indicates, that it is a Prime. My TPS Prime #16. And that's what my account overview says. 16 TPS Primes. But this new list only shows 8 Primes. 8 from way back.
BTW: No Email notification on my Prime #16, or 9-15 for that matter.
My host is 59415.

I don't suppose there's any chance of the 800 wu/host limit being relaxed is there? :)

I'm not sure if the server would be able to handle all workunits being returned at once. I guess I could try to boost the limit up to 1000, but not more at once.

See http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=811&nowrap=true#8811. Maybe it's just too small.

See http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=912 where it mentions there are now links per-User from the Top Prime Finders page which lists the primes found.

I do so like the active work being done by Rytis et al on PrimeGrid, all my whinges have been fixed or explained in a far better timescale than most other projects I've been involved in.
